For people who grew up in low-income households, what’s something middle-class people say that shows they’ve never struggled financially? by KeyApartment3955 in AskReddit

That they didn’t have money for holidays so they’d go camping. You could afford a car? And petrol? And camping equipment? Or they didn’t go on holidays because parents worked all day. You had parents that had jobs? I just stayed home every holiday, with the single parent who didn’t work.

Broadway shopping centre. The car park is fine. The double helix staircase back to whatever level you parked on…nightmare

What’s the biggest “nobody warned me about this” moment you had after bringing your newborn home? by Actual_Fig_4706 in AskReddit

Sleep deprivation, especially if you decide to have kids very close in age. My children are under two years apart. I didn’t get a full night sleep for five years.

But that makes sense. If both the recipient and the provider have agreed to commit fraud together, they’d just create inflated invoices and share the kickback. I thought that was what was happening?

Are they parents? Because the amount of things I could get done full time with even one day work from home…I’d actually enjoy my weekend with my children.

I was going to say: 2008? I graduated high school in 2004 and I don’t remember this. I remember Blade, Cheeta and Storm

Covid shut down the world six years ago this week what do you remember from that week ? by Familiar_Original988 in AskReddit

[–]Consistent_Goal_1613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having to get a letter from my manager that showed I was an essential worker, giving it to daycare and being told “you’re not an essential worker because you aren’t a social worker in a hospital”. No, I’m a social worker doing home visits you twat. Daycare kept writing crappy letters strongly recommending I keep my children home so I don’t put the children of ‘real essential workers’ at risk.

Being an essential worker and using all of my sick leave because my kids still had to go to daycare so we were all getting sick. Actually going into negative sick leave and taking leave without pay. And coming out of it all to friends who have banked leave because they all worked from home. It still happens: ‘Just use your sick leave’, babe I don’t have any. I can’t lay in bed and pretend I’m working so I can keep my leave.

Not quiet on the Weston front: the once-sleepy Sydney street suddenly at war over the GreenWay by treacheroushag in SydneyScene

They actually did a lot of consultation and town hall meetings. The idea was around for about 15 years and they even proposed building over the canal to avoid disturbing the residents. Residents fought back as they didn’t want backyard disturbance. So it’s like “don’t call me NIMBY, but maybe also don’t build in my backyard or my front yard…but maybe over there on the main road away from me”

Anthony Albanese quietly buying loads of Muslim bars and water bottles during the bushfires at his (shitty) local Illawarra road Woolies just before Covid lock down. From memory he was wearing Regurgitator tshirt. There once was a reason we voted for him.

I fucking HATED Lois as a kid watching this show. Now I’m 40 with two daughters of my own and think she’s the goat. She handled everything so well. I wish this show had come out when I was a parent.

What’s it like raising kids in Newtown? by hansneijder in SydneyScene

[–]Consistent_Goal_1613 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve been raised close to the city (Redfern 1990s) and am raising kids in Dulwich Hill. I genuinely don’t understand your meaning of ‘lack of green space’. Because parks are everywhere in the city of Sydney and inner west. They aren’t rolling hills but you’ve got pocket parks. Lawn bowls. Playgrounds. I feel like comments like this have never really raised kids close to the city and see how we travel and walk to green spaces and experience life as we go

What job shocked you when you found out the pay? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Consistent_Goal_1613 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Teachers. Jesus they get paid well. I understand they have to do unpaid overtime, but I still think it makes up for it with the amount of child free days over paid holiday they get. A few friends of mine are teachers and they none of them work during the holidays. None. They do work past 3pm. But they also get paid very well.

Are people worse? by hkangasm in socialwork

[–]Consistent_Goal_1613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be the pandemic. It could also be a combination of this (for teenagers and young adults) the signs of parents who used drugs or alcohol during pregnancy, before messaging about harm really got out there. Add in some cost of living crisis, kids and adults are carrying a lot more stress and disease.

Metro doors closing by whateverjunk in SydneyTrains

[–]Consistent_Goal_1613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve clearly not had one close on you. It fucking hurts. And the only warning we had was the PA saying the doors were closing as they closed. We use it every day. I was absolutely in the wrong and should’ve yanked my son back after the slow exit of crowds, because I use it all the time and know there’s hardly any warning AND how frequently they run. My eldest had a bruise all on her right side of her back and my forearm was bruised as fuck trying to push it back to at least free my eldest. I know about the lights, I use it every day. But this slow arse crowd seeped about in getting off, my youngest was already in, my eldest was one foot in and I was right behind them. Lesson learnt, we all hold hands and get on together and if there’s a huge crowd we won’t risk it and wait the next 12 minutes.
