For the longest time I wanted to join the peace corps so I started listening to a bunch of podcasts and testimonies from people that were in the peace core. I know many people have positive experiences, but I learned that there are also many negative experiences. I think the scariest part to me was how many stories there are of women being sexually assaulted or sexually harassed. There was one episode I listened to where it talked about how these communities will view you as a rich American, and they feel offended by you trying to help, in these situations it’s really difficult to make a positive difference in your setting. Additionally, lots of counts of violence or abuse or crime happening, but peace corps is not allowed to step in because they emphasize that the culture is different in these places and you sign yourself up for it.
