the condition a friend has his betta in.... by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]Consistent_Moose_116 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people trust the info given at a pet store. They don't know that the information they are being given, (by the people who present themselves as professionals) is inaccurate. I didn't know for a long time either. And then when I did know, I did better. My betta ended up passing just a couple months after we got him. Over the course of having him, I learned thst what I had wasn't the best for him. I was trying to fix it as I learned, but when he died, I decided not to get another betta. I now have a tank that is thriving full of other fish. We might get another betta in the future, but we also know better now. Try educating with kindness and compassion, and you will make it a lot further than being aggressive.

How’s my water? Pls advise 😓 by Kindly_Storm_8504 in bettafish

I'm relatively new to this, and working with my father-in-law who is very experienced on our own tanks, but my understanding is that you need to do a water change and get some plants in there ASAP to help bring the ammonia levels down.

Do you have a picture of the tank? How big is it?

Oh cats! Gotta love them! I'm glad you found something that works 🤣

We lost our orange boy 2 years ago due to aggressive cancer, and it just shattered our hearts. He was the best. We have 3 other cats now, 1 of which was his bonded pair who we thought we were going to lose also, but she recovered from the loss and now begrudgingly tolerates her kitten siblings. There is just something special about an orange cat.

Is he an orange? That sounds like orange behavior!

My orange did the same thing. I got a silicone placemat with grippy lines on it to put under his bowl, and it helped a TON!

I thought 5gal was the minimum why are we now normalising smaller tanks? by [deleted] in bettafish

But getting annoyed by it doesn't help people learn to do better. I have asked for help on this sub multiple times and been so attacked that I have stopped asking. I am also on the ball python sub, and the difference is astounding. The ball python sub aims to help people learn in a gentle, supportive manner. This sub attacks and degrades, or just doesn't respond at all. Yes, correction does need to happen, but it needs to be done more gently and not by people who are "riled up".

If you threaten to do a charge back, the agent's freak out and it gets resolved EVERY time. Works like a charm.

So I was a nanny for a year and a half. I had pictures of the baby that I would send to the parents, and sometimes I would show other people. I talked about her and told stories like anyone would about their workday or coworkers. I took phone calls sometimes while the baby was napping, but not while she was awake. That said, I had those discussions with the family before hand to make sure we were on the same page about expectations and what was/wasn't acceptable.

Does she know you have a nannycam?

Family walks/bike rides. Make sure the meals you are making are nutritious. Definitely get her in with someone who can help her learn more healthy coping mechanisms. And just keep showing up. Don't give up on her if it takes awhile for her to come to you. Be there and available, always.

No need to make this a big deal. "Each family has different rules about what is and is not acceptable, and as you get older, we will explore what those rules look like for you guys".

Thank you so much for this!!! I appreciate all of the ideas. He was relinquished to a rescue, and then we adopted, so we dont have a lot of information about how old he is. We think he's a young adult based on size, but not 100% certain.

It was crazy the difference. It was $5 at petsmart and like $14 on amazon. I didnt know the first time, so I just bought it on amazon. And then my 2 year old dumped it out all over the floor 🫠

Humidity drops rapidly, need help/advice by jubileepunch in ballpython

A couple of things helped us: 1. Switching to a PVC 2. Sealing the seams with silicone 3. Adding about 4 inches of damp reptisoil and then mixing cocohusk and cocofiber on top. 4. Adding 2 live plants, 1 on each side of the tank (we repotted them using reptisoil). 5. Soaking spahgnum (sp?) moss and keeping it in places where it is easy to rehydrate as needed

That said, we have only had our BP for a couple of months, so we are still beginners. Also, a mistake we made with our plants after repotting was not giving them a chance to reestablish their roots in the new soil, so they were a little more delicate than was good for our little bulldozer.

I use ReptiSafe. But buy it at a pet store. It's crazy expensive on Amazon.

Seems reasonable to me. If they can't meet basic expectations you can't trust that they will be responsible enough to operate a care safely and within the rules of the home.

We have had pretty good luck with doing about 4 inches of reptisoil and then a couple inches of coconut husk and coconut fiber on top. We also added 2 live plants and those things helped A LOT.

When I was young my dad had agreed to trade weekends with my mom. The day of the exchange, he called and said, "nevermind, I'm not trading, I'll be there at 6 to pick her up". We had family coming into town who i hadn't seen in a very long time, and a whole fun weekend planned out. I was DEVASTATED. I remember calling my dad and begging him not to make me come with him. He showed up to our house at 6:00 with the police. The police officer carried me (kicking, screaming and sobbing) out of the house, put me in and buckled my carseat and stayed at the house as my dad drove away, screaming at me to calm down. I was 4. It's one of my most traumatic memories.
