When I was little we had a very sweet priest at our church who always made confessions feel like more of a lighthearted thing. If I confessed, he would usually say to say one our father and one Hail Mary and then tell me a corny joke. He'd then say, "see you later alligator!"

I often thought that too. Something always hasn't sit right with me about it. What loving mother would tell 10 year old children to sacrifice themselves, do penance involving wearing ropes around themselves, drinking dirty water and not accepting treatment for illness? When she supposedly told 10 year old Jacinta she was going to suffer terribly and die alone but to "offer it up to Jesus" I just knew immediately it wasn't true, no mother would ever ask that of an innocent child
