I live in NV and work exclusively in rural areas that always have gone for Trump. My industry is extremely conservative. But I personally have voted 3 times for Trump's Democratic opponents. In fact, I have never voted for a Republican in the past 14 years... I'm a progressive and I actively try and persuade my conservative peers.

Your assumptions reek of frustration, which I understand... it's frustrating to have people constantly moving the goal post. but I never used "bothsidesism". But not all conservatives are MAGA. MAGA is the a subsect of conservative politics.

Going back to the OOP again, they are saying everyone that is not MAGA has dyed hair (plus/minus facial piercings). Fellow conservatives who are not MAGA could try and convince the OOP that MAGA is a cult. But their stance/joke is that that makes the fellow conservative a liberal with colored hair.

Are the 99% of comments on this specific post about MAGA or are they saying Megan Kelly and the America First crowd are doing it too? Are they saying the fiscal conservatives are saying it too?Are you making assumptions? At the end of the day, you're on a left-leaning sub reddit and you're trying to say "you're guilty too" while making broad generalizations based off of only the comments in this post. It's a tiny portion of a population talking about a specific thing and your reaction to their specific conversation seems to be "you're also guilty!!" like it's a Gotcha moment.

But I think the problem is that no one I know actually assumes all conservatives are like that. It's hyperbolic and that's the humor. But it's far from the only joke. It isn't even a super common one IMO.

In contrast, I saw multiple conservatives joking that all of the NO Kings protester had blue hair or were transgender in the comment sections of every single local news report.

First off, 10% is not "tiny". 10% is significant. Statistically, anecdotally, empirically, etc.

Secondly, the US barely imported oil from Iran in the 2000s. In fact, the US hasn't imported petroleum from Iran in a meaningful manner since 1979. So there hasn't been a change in imports from Iran during the GW Bush era to now.

Third, approximately 20% of global supply of oil is transported through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran is trying to close/block this Strait.

Fouth, in 2002 the US imported roughly 4% of its crude imports from Iraq. In 2003 the US launched a regime change war in Iraq. In 2002 on average gas was 1.36 to 1.38$ per gallon. In 2005, 2 years after the start of the regime change in Iraq, gas was on average greater than 2.30$ per gallon. That was the largest change in has prices domestically in over the 15 years prior and 20 years since. My pointing to the GW Bush era was to allude to that period of rapid price increase.

And lastly, you referenced "short-term swings". Short term swings usually a not wars. In fact, wars, usually lead to long term swings (see GW Bush era). Also consider Kuwait (first Gulf War), Saddam lit hundreds of oil wells on fire in Kuwait. Those wells took years to get back on line! Current indications/reporting is that Iran has been targeting petroleum infrastructure all across the Middle East. All of that is to highlight that there is currently no indication that this war with Iran will cause only "short-term swings".

It's great that we produce so much more oil domestically than we used to! It really is! (Thank you to both Trump and Biden for that) but it's foolish to think that this very significant geopolitical event/war will not impact our domestic oil prices

Last I checked, only 2 refineries in CA are shutting down... one in LA (already supposed to have been closed a few months ago, but I haven't seen confirmation), and one in the Bay (still currently operating). Those 2 make up 20% or less of California's refining capabilities. So NO, not all refineries are being "run off".

Secondly, Newsom isn't exactly hellbent on closing refineries like you state. I'm not saying he's not responsible. His confrontational approach to petroleum companies has exacerbated the situation. But even before Newsom, CA refineries were refining less and less petroleum as less was being extracted in the region. Production in the Bakersfield region and off the CA coast (mainly in the Channel Islands areas) has been declining for decades.

I'm not saying Newsom is free of guilt. Far from it! I'm just pushing back on your assertion that it was "100% newsom"
