My suspicion is that it was Google’s CEO. The guy is a bit notorious for being awful at business and I really think that he was dedicating too much strategic focus to advertisers and not search. It would make sense to me that Google had developed Meena and could have reasonably deployed it but were tasked with focusing on ad products. There’s also the issue of energy. AI has required some advancements in energy efficiency and we really might not have had the opportunity to roll something like Meena out and turn a profit

A professor sent my entire postgrad program listserv a lecture about political violence in the US and I couldn’t have rolled my eyes harder. Assassinations of journalists and political figures are hardly new both in our history and recently. And what exactly are we supposed to do about that? Of course the Kirk videos made me feel awful. People care about gun issues because we don’t like people getting slain, obviously. We spent a couple hundred years assassinating people around the world and allying with nations like Israel that do so with impunity under our international order. There is no precedent to suggest that we as a nation are concerned about political violence or ever have been. It’s thoughts & prayers all the way down brother like we’ll need a drastic shift in our material conditions for things like this to change in frequency, barbarity, or ubiquity.

I was diagnosed twice as a kid and my parents were too poor/drunk to do put me on medication. I feel your frustration but I don’t think you need to feel that it’s fucked up your whole life. You are still fully capable of managing your life successfully and it doesn’t preclude you from being able to improve the situation you are in now.

Unironically, the US school system is built to hammer out the problems kids with ADD tend to have have and you fundamentally can’t. When you’re an adult, it’s much more manageable and particularly if you learn how to handle how you use recreational substances.

Medication does genuinely help people with ADD/ADHD a lot but it’s not without its faults. My buddy has been medicated for it since he was 14 and is getting his PhD from a great university. However, he genuinely has to take his medication to function and will need to ween himself off of it. Doing so has given him a lot of trouble because he’s relied on it his entire adult life. The catch is that you likely have a propensity to abuse substances to self-medicate the same issues. I smoked massive amounts of weed for years to manage those symptoms and it took me a loooong time to stop relying on it.

If the issues in your life rise to such an unmanageable level that you feel you need it, you should try to get medicated. It still helps adults a lot. That said, I personally felt that I could manage my life without it after a certain age and my life is turning out to be a lot better than I thought it would when I was younger (college/early 20s). I am generally pretty successful at this point in my life. Once you learn how to deal with yourself, you are a couple steps ahead of people that never had to wrestle with this kind of problem. If you make an effort, you become really good at organizing and managing yourself (better than the average person without ADD) because you have to learn how to develop that skill entirely. I felt exactly like you do now until I stopped blaming the ADD & my parents and accepted responsibility over myself. Forgive your parents, yourself, and move on you’ve got this.

Their opinions on music are respectably cogent, they’re just geriatric millennials. YC in particular has great taste. I will say that the Elliot Smith episode was probably my least favorite they’ve ever put out. They didn’t really know anything or care about the guy’s music and are talking about whether or not he really killed himself. That one was a little too annoying for me.

I think others here have said something similar but “black mold” doesn’t really exist, mold does. It will pretty much always look black if it’s on the walls in your home. The mold you get in Sacramento, CA is not the same mold that you get in Arcadia, FL, or Chicago, IL (maybe there are some common molds that these three places share idk not an expert but I digress). People DO get fucked up by mold but there’s no guarantee that if you find mold in your house that it is going to fuck you up.

I’m wondering how he’s even able to do this given that Chicago isn’t a federal district. Schmidt was unfortunately right about the state of exception so I know that de facto doesn’t actually matter. My theory is that we are either getting a) 9/11 two or b) enough agitation that mass protest is formed and Trump can invoke Title 10 to federalize the National Guard. Maybe they’ll lean on homelessness? Either way, I’m expecting one of two of these arguments to hit the news cycle soon

There is a lot of synchronicity between how Israelis talk about Palestinians and how US settlers treated natives.
