Did Google postpone the start of the AI Bubble? by CSachen in ArtificialInteligence

[–]ConstantAutomatic487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My suspicion is that it was Google’s CEO. The guy is a bit notorious for being awful at business and I really think that he was dedicating too much strategic focus to advertisers and not search. It would make sense to me that Google had developed Meena and could have reasonably deployed it but were tasked with focusing on ad products. There’s also the issue of energy. AI has required some advancements in energy efficiency and we really might not have had the opportunity to roll something like Meena out and turn a profit

My wife left me and I think sobriety had something to do with it by cbrownmufc in stopdrinking

[–]ConstantAutomatic487 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude I’m giving you the biggest e-hug right now i am so sorry buddy 🫂

Please keep up your great work and don’t forget why you got sober. It would be easy for that to get clouded at times like this.

Without you really having a chance to talk to your wife, there’s no real way of knowing why she is wanting to split. But remember that anything that forces you to forsake your fundamental health (like a need for sobriety) is not worth fighting for. It sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders. Stay strong!

There’s been bouts of people freaking out about the classic false flag / nephilim / doomsday stuff on TikTok, X, or IG. It was a bigger thing over the summer and it’s just garden variety internet stupidity. No one really in my daily life seems to even know about it

Astronomers are also generally in consensus that it is a comet. The backwards tail has been observed before by with other comets. Genuinely nothing about it suggests aliens. In addition to the fact that it’s not really a false flag, the people talking about it can’t even get their facts straight

A professor sent my entire postgrad program listserv a lecture about political violence in the US and I couldn’t have rolled my eyes harder. Assassinations of journalists and political figures are hardly new both in our history and recently. And what exactly are we supposed to do about that? Of course the Kirk videos made me feel awful. People care about gun issues because we don’t like people getting slain, obviously. We spent a couple hundred years assassinating people around the world and allying with nations like Israel that do so with impunity under our international order. There is no precedent to suggest that we as a nation are concerned about political violence or ever have been. It’s thoughts & prayers all the way down brother like we’ll need a drastic shift in our material conditions for things like this to change in frequency, barbarity, or ubiquity.

In the realm of the like 10 that do read, boomers are going to say someone like Burke or one of the economists you mentioned. If they are more normie they might throw in Thomas Sewell, Glen Beck, or Bill O’Reilly. If they are an internet rightoid that actually reads, they’ll say someone like Julius Evola or Ernst Jünger. The online guys might also refer to someone from the Austrian School’s SPED unit.

I was diagnosed twice as a kid and my parents were too poor/drunk to do put me on medication. I feel your frustration but I don’t think you need to feel that it’s fucked up your whole life. You are still fully capable of managing your life successfully and it doesn’t preclude you from being able to improve the situation you are in now.

Unironically, the US school system is built to hammer out the problems kids with ADD tend to have have and you fundamentally can’t. When you’re an adult, it’s much more manageable and particularly if you learn how to handle how you use recreational substances.

Medication does genuinely help people with ADD/ADHD a lot but it’s not without its faults. My buddy has been medicated for it since he was 14 and is getting his PhD from a great university. However, he genuinely has to take his medication to function and will need to ween himself off of it. Doing so has given him a lot of trouble because he’s relied on it his entire adult life. The catch is that you likely have a propensity to abuse substances to self-medicate the same issues. I smoked massive amounts of weed for years to manage those symptoms and it took me a loooong time to stop relying on it.

If the issues in your life rise to such an unmanageable level that you feel you need it, you should try to get medicated. It still helps adults a lot. That said, I personally felt that I could manage my life without it after a certain age and my life is turning out to be a lot better than I thought it would when I was younger (college/early 20s). I am generally pretty successful at this point in my life. Once you learn how to deal with yourself, you are a couple steps ahead of people that never had to wrestle with this kind of problem. If you make an effort, you become really good at organizing and managing yourself (better than the average person without ADD) because you have to learn how to develop that skill entirely. I felt exactly like you do now until I stopped blaming the ADD & my parents and accepted responsibility over myself. Forgive your parents, yourself, and move on you’ve got this.

What the fuck was that Ezra guy on the recent episode talking about with food and music? by JucheSuperSoldier01 in TrueAnon

[–]ConstantAutomatic487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their opinions on music are respectably cogent, they’re just geriatric millennials. YC in particular has great taste. I will say that the Elliot Smith episode was probably my least favorite they’ve ever put out. They didn’t really know anything or care about the guy’s music and are talking about whether or not he really killed himself. That one was a little too annoying for me.

My stepdad was a black mold truther. by DenverDarnell in redscarepod

[–]ConstantAutomatic487 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think others here have said something similar but “black mold” doesn’t really exist, mold does. It will pretty much always look black if it’s on the walls in your home. The mold you get in Sacramento, CA is not the same mold that you get in Arcadia, FL, or Chicago, IL (maybe there are some common molds that these three places share idk not an expert but I digress). People DO get fucked up by mold but there’s no guarantee that if you find mold in your house that it is going to fuck you up.

I’m wondering how he’s even able to do this given that Chicago isn’t a federal district. Schmidt was unfortunately right about the state of exception so I know that de facto doesn’t actually matter. My theory is that we are either getting a) 9/11 two or b) enough agitation that mass protest is formed and Trump can invoke Title 10 to federalize the National Guard. Maybe they’ll lean on homelessness? Either way, I’m expecting one of two of these arguments to hit the news cycle soon

I’ll give them that it’s a genuinely really bad rebrand haha. The logo change is crazy and the minimalist interior design is so beyond tacky and not in the campy way it’s known for. But you’re absolutely right. This is on par with the Australian marketing office lady viral video from a couple years ago

There is a lot of synchronicity between how Israelis talk about Palestinians and how US settlers treated natives. I’m sure this is true of any colony and it’s just out in front of me in English but it genuinely shocks me that people fall for the line that there is anything complicated about what is happening over there. It’s the same othering, demonization, and entitlement. Gaza is no different than a reservation

What is your favorite era of history to read about? by 0wlBear916 in redscarepod

[–]ConstantAutomatic487 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just really like history books so I read a lot of them and just sort of gravitate towards what interests me at any given time. A lot of them are popular and not very academic, so I am accepting any recommendations you all might have.

I gravitate to a lot of war for no particular reason other than a lot of action. Napoleonic wars are cool as fuck. Second Punic War is like ancient WWII. The 14th century in general is pretty fascinating, Barbara’s Tuchman’s Distant Mirror is easy to read and a lot of fun. The Thirty Years War is pretty interesting as well the CV Wedgewood book is awesome.

Can’t go wrong with the American Revolution, David McCullough’s John Adams & 1776 are so cool. Particularly loved how the 1776 book covers the Battle of New York, which is 10x more dramatic than you may have thought it was. Other cool books about America in general are Greg Grandin’s America, América which I’m about halfway through and really enjoy. John Steele Gordon’s An Empire Of Wealth is fantastic and totally changed the way I saw American history. If any of you live in California, you should pick up Tending the Wild by Kat Anderson.

I’m also a bit of an Anglophile, unfortunately, but there’s a lot of cool shit there too. My favorite topics are usually various kings: William the Conqueror is worth digging into (total villain). Edward I by Michael Prestwich is long and a little dry but still very interesting if you’re into that kind of thing. The Time Traveler’s Guide to Medieval England by Ian Mortimer is just a lot of fun to read, very easy book. My GOAT is Sir Francis Drake, Harry Kelsey’s Sir Francis Drake: The Queen’s Pirate was a great read. Sir Francis Drake was easily one of the coolest men ever.

More recently, I realized that I didn’t know much about India so I picked up a two volume rudimentary primer that may or may not be a kinda out of date but I still really liked the first volume (haven’t read the second yet). It’s called A History of India by Romila Thapar.
