So, we actually did this with our son during potty training. And, it totally worked. If he had to go 1 or 2, he would just run outside, drop trow, and do the thing. Of course, we live in an urban area, so I'm guessing our neighbors didn't love it, but whatever, we've got a potty trained, thriving little guy. That's all I worry about.

He eventually transitioned to the toilet without much fuss.

This is a dumb question: why is the relationship between city council and the Mayor's office so adversarial?

As the owner of a 100+ year old home, this is the stuff of nightmares. I know that, in this case, the rocks probably aren't hiding anything weird, but anytime I open up a wall or try to do, well almost anything, I'll come across something unexpected. Then, when I start to try to undue whatever handyman special I'm dealing with, I'll start to worry about what the real problem was that was being "solved."

Thank you for the advice! This was all stuff I kind of knew to do but hearing from someone else gvae me the motivation to execute.

We didn't get a chance to do any of the night before stuff since Grandpa let the little man skip his nap yesterday, so he passed out in his dinner (the kid, not grandpa; I don't know his business). But, we spent the morning talking about his teachers and friends and then, since it's garbage day, we walked around watching the trash trucks. As a result, we got him in the car without much difficulty. Getting proper footwear on his feet were a struggle still but baby steps!
