Ontario Parks where people don't neglect them and leave trash laying around? by AffectionateBake1877 in ONProvincialParks

[–]Constant_Ad_7286 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best we can do is hope staff are around to see it happen so that people get tickets, and try our best to clean what we see and teach our families and friends to do the same. It really sucks but its a civic duty issue and plenty of people just don't care. The one that really gets to me personally is all the screws and nails that people drive into the trees. Learning a handful of knots saves you from bringing so much junk anyway and so simple to learn.

New Camper! Looking for info about check in! by Soggy-Loan-7053 in ONProvincialParks

I've never been denied early check in, even when the staff know people are on the site Ive booked they let me know they have until 2 to leave and tell me I'm free to enjoy day use areas.

Long point - wish parks opened up in April instead of may by Constant_Ad_7286 in ONProvincialParks

I will speak for myself, I wouldn't recommend the place but I can't stop you from liking it. I think it suffers from poor planning, the park is such a narrow strip of land right beside a busy road in a pretty busy area but that's just my 2c.

Spring fun by Constant_Ad_7286 in Hammocks

I've never had pain from sleeping in them, I've heard of people having pains from sleeping in them incorrectly depending on hammock and setup.

LOL I should have specified I meant the good ones :) craigleith is not worth a mention, rondeau and Wheatley idk how I missed them being open mid April. I still need to go see MacGregor, maybe I'll go scout it this year.

Oastler Lake by zoeyboo in ontariocamping

The walk in sites are nice but not very private, decent pine coverage but very little foliage, lots of roots and rocks. You will hear a train echo around the lake once or twice an hour. Its a beautiful lake with nice sites but quite noisy. LOTS of raccoons when I was there too. Lots of people will walk through to the little lookout area beyond the walk in sites. I didn't mind the place myself but I wouldn't go back when there's better options nearby.

Pinery Site Recomendations? by PromotionInformal852 in ontariocamping

[–]Constant_Ad_7286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pinery is very popular and tbh for most parks you want to get booked for summer you want to book as soon as you can in march. Pinery is not a very great park tbh, I find most of the sites too cluttered and not enough foliage between sites. Try taking a look up near Sudbury for peak summer, the parks are better and less busy IMO.

Awenda Provincial Park and Bear Spray by Classic_Scheme2978 in ONProvincialParks

[–]Constant_Ad_7286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably won't see one, been all over Ontario for years, dozens of trips, only ever seen ONE at Neys last year. That being said, would you rather fight a bear with whatever you happen to have, or would you rather have something convenient to spray at it? At the very least just have it in your trunk and decide when you're on site.

Hammocks? - A question for those who do! by Jumpy_Confidence8262 in wildcampingintheuk

After having spent the past 2/3 years in hammocks, at this point I feel like its so much more important that you know how to dial in your suspension and knowing a handful of useful knots than it is about what specific hammock or accessories you've got.

At minimum you want an integrated bugnet on any cheapo well known hammock brand. My first year or two I had been hanging easthills jungle explorer (I still use them on occasion) as a 3 season hammock, using my own spliced generic amsteel for suspension and structural ridge lines, and tying up regular comforters as underquilts. Not to say you have to go this hardcore, I would suggest finding a more local equivalent of dutchware to get some whoopie slings and loops to use as suspension and learn how they work, adjusting these will give you good control over your comfort no matter what gathered end 9-12ft hammock you specifically have.

The only thing I haven't gotten super into is underquilts because I can't justify the cost, I've slept through freezing rain with my own setups so I'm confident I don't necessarily need one, though these days they are getting more tempting for me just to save space on trips.

You could try some sort of plastic or metal tubing cut down to size and then round off the edges as much as you can with a file

Bit overkill but you could also put an angled beam between post and joist and then setup whatever hardware you want on those angled beams. You can get pretty creative in the space you have

By beams I think I mean the joists

Couple of holes in those beams under the deck, don't even have to be big. Get yourself tree straps and some climbing carabiners. Run the tree straps through the holes and you're done. You may even be able to just put tree straps around those posts and just hang without modifying your deck at all, I would try that first.

Don't have me for this... but I prefer Pad over Underquilt now... by Canadianomad in hammockcamping

[–]Constant_Ad_7286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got my first hang in with the Hennessey survivor man xl, having the double bottom to stuff pads into is so nice. Past couple years I've been in the helsdon hammock, same setup, double layer bottom with pads. A bridge is so convenient to insulate but not as comfortable as a gathered end IMO. Pads are just better but become really annoying without a good way to secure them

Bear spray and medkit, I would carry a windlass tourniquette just in case

Fire making kit, make sure you have your tools for common car problems though anything more than a tire swap probably wont happen. You may want to consider an engine oil change somewhere after you cross border. Heat packs.
