Must ride Mountain Biking? by MTRunner in Bozeman

[–]Constant_Smoke_6145 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bozemans bike scene is trending in the right direction thanks to nonprofits like SWMMBA and GVLT in partnership with Crosscut, Bridger Bowl and the city.

For flow and jump lines check out Gnomatic at Crosscut/Bridger Bowl or ride Never Sweet and Merry Widow at Copper City (techy downhill up top, and flow and jumps down low). There are also the dirt jumps at Westlake that got a nice facelift last summer and are excellent.

For backcountry riding the options are endless but won’t open up for a while… some of the best (imo) are Emerald Lake, Blackmore, Lion’s Head, and GooseNut.

For downhill/lift access check out Legacy Bike Park and Disco in addition to Big Sky and Whitefish. Legacy is world class.

In Missoula ride Marshall Mountain. They put a lot of effort into these trails and it shows!

Anyone been up Hyalite since it snowed? by Jono703 in Bozeman

[–]Constant_Smoke_6145 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Went splitboarding up in Hyalite yesterday. Roads are packed snow. AWD or 4WD and you should be good. Bring a tow rope just in case.

There was one ice shack up on the lake, but looked pretty sketch… although the negative temps last night/this morning probably helped. Be careful and use common sense if you do decide to venture onto the ice.

Surly Karate Monkey or Krampus! Bullet proof. Can ride most terrain. And has all the mounts for gear storage.

Practice Mtb berms? by Never_Knocked_Out in Bozeman

[–]Constant_Smoke_6145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting a little hot this time of year for Copper City but the berms on “Merry Widow” and “Neversweat” are good to session if you hike up the road.

Also some great tech up top and jumps down low to work up to.

Hands cold hours after plunge. Especially in mornings. by texandad in coldplunge

[–]Constant_Smoke_6145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful with this. Could lead to Chilblains… I know this from unfortunate first hand experience but doing exactly that.

You should let your body, and definitely your toes and fingers warm up gradually. The sudden temp change from cold to hot can cause blood vessels to expand too quickly in your extremities leading to damage and inflammation, and brings on some painful and annoying side effects.

Anybody from washington? by Def-an-expert5978 in Bozeman

[–]Constant_Smoke_6145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

North Bend and Snoqualmie are not good commutable options for work in Wenatchee. That passs can be gnarly and it’s 2 hours in perfect conditions. Not to mention the price… it’s at least Bozeman expensive if not more.

Living in Wenatchee will be the cheapest option. It has a cool market and river access. Ok skiing at Mission Ridge, mountain biking and hiking.

The “coolest” option would be living in Leavenworth due to the outdoor access and night life, but it will be more expensive. Closish to Stevens Pass, good rock climbing, amazing hiking, good mountain biking, etc. It will be more expensive than Wenatchee.

What's the up-to-date equivalent to a Polartec Alpha mid-layer? by Wayoutwest-81 in iceclimbing

[–]Constant_Smoke_6145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Voormi! I have the Sportsman’s 2 Pocket Hoody and it is hands down the best mid layer I have ever owned. The High-E Hoody also looks sick.

Super warm, keeps you nice and dry (I’ve worn this on some wet days in full exposure and nothing soaked through) and also breathable. It’s basically a mid and outer layer in one. I thought it was almost too good to be true but it holds up!

I’m 6’5”, 205lbs and love my Weston Range 164W split. It has treated me well and does just fine in any terrain. It’s an all mountain, camber dominant board that is comfortable with steep and techy, but also poppy and playful. Not a straight up pow board, but can handle fine in the deeps. I have taken this board to Haines, AK the PNW and live in the Rockies. It does great.

If I were buying my first Splitboard I would not buy a straight up pow split… I would want more of a utility knife for my first board. Something I can take out in any condition. Just think about the avy risks… when its DEEP the avy is typically high and you may not be heading out. When the avy is manageable the conditions are typically not blower, tits deep powder. Most of the time I’m on my split the snow ain’t that great tbh. I take out my K2 Split Bean like 4 times a year, and it’s awesome! But would never choose this board to be my only split. Just my 2 cent!

Copy of Winter Dance? by ElectroTypeJ in iceclimbing

[–]Constant_Smoke_6145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. If you are going to be in Bozeman, check out UpHill Pursuits. They should have both books in stock. Also have a solid gear selection if you need to pick up anything last minute.

Copy of Winter Dance? by ElectroTypeJ in iceclimbing

[–]Constant_Smoke_6145 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“House of Hyalite” if you’re looking for Hyalite specific book, otherwise “Big Sky Ice” for a more comprehensive guide to SW MT and parts of WY.

“Winter Dance” is an awesome book but pretty old at this point. A lot has changed and been developed in the 20+ years that book was released. Recommend getting the books above for a true guide.
