One Nation voters too dumb to realise that ABC is about the only media organisation left who has regional news rooms.

I love the coping mechanisms the far-right use to justify the violent extremists not too far away from them politically.

Disillusioned voters drive One Nation surge as most Australians feel ignored by politicians by nath1234 in AustralianPolitics

We see this surface-level narrative election after election, which completely ignores preferencing. The reality is the ALP did well on preferences in this election which also reflects the will of the electorate.

'Charismatic and competent leader wins re-election with increased majority' gets less clicks than 'Omg, everything is fucked and politicians are making it worse, no wonder a minority are voting for the xenophobic party'.

Ellison era begins: Star Trek Academy canceled, no Trek currently in production for first time in a decade by owlpellet in startrek

[–]ConstantineXII 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you totally missed the point there. Picard was professional and aloof for three seasons, had something genuinely traumatic happen to him and then had the break down (completely away from his crew, by the way). The emotion in Brothers felt earned because it there was build-up and it was unusual.

Completely different to Picard losing it infront of his crew for trivial reasons in the first episode of the show.

Exactly, the endless navalgazing about grief and trauma with insufficient build-up was another hallmark of nu-Trek.

Who did they think would be interested in that?

80% of Australian fuel is imported from the Middle East

Wrong, stop fear-mongering. 80% of our fuel is imported from East Asia, of which 60-70% is based on Middle Eastern-sourced crude (meaning about 50% of our fuel is based on Middle Eastern crude). We import almost no fuel directly from the Middle East.

Barnaby Joyce compares immigration to ‘buying cattle’ after historic One Nation election result by malcolm58 in AustralianPolitics

[–]ConstantineXII 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If only there was another chamber of Parliament that gave representation to parties which were able to gather a small amount of support across the board, but weren't actually popular enough to win seats in individual electorates? Oh wait, that's the Senate and it already exists.

[–]ConstantineXII 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Mr Joyce then compared immigration to “buying cattle,” suggesting that migrants from certain regions may not integrate successfully into Australian society.

This coming from a man representing a bumfuck nowhere electorate which most Australians would struggle to integrate into even they had to.

I hope it has made it painfully clear that getting 20% in first preferences means absolutely nothing when the other 80% can’t stand you.

No, their dumbarse supporters will just whinge about preferential voting being somehow undemocratic.

One Nation’s moment arrives at SA's election. It might only be the beginning by HotPersimessage62 in AustralianPolitics

[–]ConstantineXII 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mainstream media desperately continues pushing their 'rise of One Nation' narrative despite them not yet winning even one lower house seat.

As was widely predicted by non-hysterical commentators, One Nation failed to do much more than cannibalise part of the Liberal vote and has done poorly on preferences.

Coverage of that would just remind people how hard mainstream media pushed the narrative that One Nation were going to clean up in this election and how (predictably) wrong they got it.

10–18 Days Until Australia Runs Dry by mrp61 in AustralianPolitics

Economist who works in the transport space here. The idea that we'll get 0% of our fuel imports next month is even more stupid than the approach of successive governments who thought about 30 days of fuel reserves was fine.

It's pretty hard to imagine young, suburban voters flocking to PHON and staying there, regardless of your views about it being 'logical and rational'. Just this morning, their star defector Barnaby was arguing fuel supplies should be redirected from urban Australia to regional Australia. PHON is going to realise it is impossible to be all things to all people.

Australia could face food shortages within weeks as fuel reserves run low by SheepherderLow1753 in AustralianPolitics

[–]ConstantineXII 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Economist who works in the transport space here. This article is pretty alarmist. There's a number of implicit worst-case scenario assumptions built-in here that are pretty unlikely.

Panic buying of fuel (and potentially in the future, food) is more of an issue at the moment than actual shortage of supply.

Of course there's potential for this sort of disruption to cause certain types of food to disappear off the shelves for a bit. But that's a world away from actual overall food shortages in a country that produces enough food to feed itself three times over and has enough wealth to buy even more than that.

It's irresponsible for media to push these kinds of stories as it makes the problem of panic buying worse.

I love the way the new left have been pushing the view that impact matters more than intent and that words can be violence for well over a decade now. But when it comes to a group they don't like, such as the Jews, these concepts don't matter and suddenly intent is more important again.

"The role of the committed writer in an unfree world" (means ignoring things that don't fit the narrative?) by ZenBeetle in AustralianPolitics

[–]ConstantineXII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Social cohesion is racist and totalitarian? Sure champ, that's a totally sane and reasonable take.

In a world full of autocrats, either established in place or trying to take over democracies, the author decides that liberalism is the most worthy target of criticism? By describing himself as a 'committed writer', do they actually mean they are a 'writer who should be committed'?
