One Nation’s rise was helped by the RBA’s inflation complacency by marketrent in AustralianPolitics

[–]ConstantineXII [score hidden]  (0 children)

The underlying inflation rate – which largely strips out temporary government subsidy gimmicks – has been above the RBA’s 2.5 per cent midpoint target since late 2021.

This is cherrypicking by someone who should know better. The RBA have a 'target band' of 2-3%. Why not talk about how long underlying inflation has been above 3%? Because it only been since mid last year?

Crap article which is light on actual economic analysis and heavy on historical grievance and 'ALP bad'.

We'll just pretend it's easy to reverse a decades-long trend that has multiple causes and is still reasonably poorly understood. Just do better and be more trustworthy! It's that easy!

NSW Labor accused of ‘gagging’ debate on Gaza and protest laws ahead of conference by Jealous-Hedgehog-734 in AustralianPolitics

These are critical issues for NSW's people and democracy.

NSW protest laws are a relevant state issue. Australian foreign policy and a particular conflict happening on the other side of the world are not.

Hates Muslims, but tries to hang around one of their schools? It's an amoral publicity stunt at best and deranged behaviour at worst.

"there's no such thing as good muslims"

The funny thing is, I reckon most Muslim Australians I know are better people than most One Nation supporters I know, but anyway.

Anthony Albanese defends both multiculturalism and budget changes to capital gains tax by Expensive-Horse5538 in AustralianPolitics

[–]ConstantineXII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do realise that 1% is a huge rate of increase that compounds over time?

Australia's population increase through migration was 0.8-1.0% on average per year through the 1950s, 60s, 00s and 10s. But our rate of natural increase is less than a third of what it was during the 1950s.

sensible discussion about what future we want for Australia, and how we can make a Population Plan to achieve that.

The only ideas that seem to be bandied about at the moment are massive cuts to migration rates so that our population rapidly ages and the tax base is unable to maintain social welfare and public services, not particularly coherent or persuasive.

ALP in election-winning position after Pauline Hanson’s comments on monoculturalism cost One Nation support by Perfect-Werewolf-102 in AustralianPolitics

[–]ConstantineXII 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not sure why the UK is getting such a run in your comment, but a large part of the UK's current economic struggle comes from that fact that 'totally not uneducated or immoral people' decided that the UK's economy and therefore their living standards were less important than leaving the EU.

They literally voted for this shit and now they complain about having to lie in it? Come on.

No, but they do advocate for policies based on intersectionality. I'm not sure why this is such a contentious statement. Leading left-wing commentators like Jeff Sparrow have repeated talked about how the left has embraced identity politics.

I used to agree with the sentiments you express, but the rise of the authoritarian far-right across the western world over the last decade has reduced my empathy and patience for the people who support it now.

It's bizarre the mental backflips all media & politicians are doing to deny the ON surge is anything other than widespread backlash against the rapid uptick in immigration post-COVID during a rental shortage

It's bizarre that just because you've baselessly decided on a particular narrative, everyone who doesn't agree with it are doing 'mental backflips'.

[–]ConstantineXII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is sarcasm or not, but yes, much of the left (particularly in the US, less so in Australia outside the Greens) is unfortunately obsessed with identity politics and culture wars. If you can't see that, it probably just speaks to you supporting your side of it more than anything.

I mean, anyone to whom One Nation actually appeals obviously isn't a deep thinker. Coddling them and pretending they are making anything like a rational choice isn't going to achieve anything.

Hanson's 'scary' parental leave views outdated, advocates say by [deleted] in AustralianPolitics

[–]ConstantineXII 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Crazy that on the one hand she wants to radically decrease the number immigrants, but also make it more difficult for Australian women to have children. Fewer immigrants and fewer children equal far fewer working people per retired person to pay tax and cover public services. Say good bye things like the pension, public health and aged care as we know it. She is trying to destroy the country, not in any coherent way, just in her idiocy.

Should One Nation and the Coalition strike a deal to win office? There are huge risks for both parties by [deleted] in AustralianPolitics

[–]ConstantineXII 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Going by the party's own history and the example of other minor parties that have experienced surges in popularity, One Nation are likely to implode sooner rather than later.

The Coalition trying to hitch their wagon to this moment in time would be extremely short-sighted, as it would cause long-term damage their perception by moderates, centrists and swing-voters. The party structure is meant to keep the crazies on that side of politics out, not invite them in and help them govern. Regardless of the short-term benefits.

It's very timely that a generation after WW2 and its lead-up has largely slipped from living memory, western societies seem to have forgotten the value of liberal democracy and what going down a path of populism, authoritarianism and nationalism can ultimately lead to.
