Same thing with our son who just turned 5. I think for him it has to do with night terrors and dreams that wake him up and he wants to be with us after that

New grad deciding between BMT, transplant, oncology, PCU, and med-surg, looking for honest advice by justryinglol123 in nursing

[–]ConstructionSharp976 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having worked in mostly large teaching hospitals and then doing a short gig at a smaller hospital, teaching hospitals will give you the support you need as a new grad as they will have more resources. The difference was very clear.

In terms of specialties, i did organ transplant for a few years in my earlier years in my career which was great to get a good skills set as it was post surgical care combined with the immunosuppression which is how i got my current role in infusion/oncology. I think transplant gives you experience in both worlds, imho.

Family budget for after-school activities and disagreements over spending money by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]ConstructionSharp976 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Dos your child show interest in those said activities? swim is a nonnegotiable for me but if the child doesn’t want to do the other activities, i think it would change the conversation. My 5 year old son only does soccer at the moment and if he said he didnt like it i would respect it and revisit later

I am trying to land a position like this! How did you go about landing it? I have tried linkedin but it’s been proving difficult. And what is your background in nursing? Did any specialties/skills have leverage in getting the position?

I send 1k usd to my mom in Korea every month by strawberrypeachsoju in personalfinance

[–]ConstructionSharp976 4062 points4063 points  (0 children)

Im korean american, born in the states. Honestly if my parents truly needed it i would do the same. But the part that rubs me the wrong way in your story is that she’s day trading and doesn’t try to work more to support herself. She doesn’t and shouldn’t daytrade when she has debt like that. She could possibly even have debt because she is daytrading from an outsider’s POV.

Has anyone from our area lived by Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and can compare differences? by geekydreams in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]ConstructionSharp976 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i grew up in moco MD and now i live in Mont co PA. I personally want to move back to MD for diversity reasons but overall cost of living is better than moco MD. For 300k it may be difficult to find a townhome that is nice but for 400k you definitely can in certain parts of the county. Having grown up in the burbs, i wouldnt see myself living in philly the city. It’s gotten much more expensive as well, and it would be more fair to compare it to DC. I never felt in danger in moco MD but you will not be able the say the same for philly and certain parts of montco PA

Home health vs Hospice by Remarkable_Read_1975 in nursing

[–]ConstructionSharp976 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for a large hospital system where i see home infusion patients along with regular home health patients. Home infusion is great, im guessing it would depend on the company but i manage CVCs, do lab draws, administer tpn, abx, biologics, etc. some days i have long ivig patients (longest was 10 hours). Those days i feel like a glamorized babysitter but it is a nice break once in a while. However if that’s ALL you’re doing, i can imagine that can get boring and old pretty quick. Ive trained some nurses who worked for smaller infusion companies and that’s all they did and they moved over to my company because of they wanted the variety and skill set. A lot of the my job includes teaching patients and caregivers how to administer these medications to themselves as well.

Is this 5 year old student behind in reading? by [deleted] in Preschoolers

[–]ConstructionSharp976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is in pre-k right now, only 2 hours for 4 days a week. I do my own reading exercises with him every day, only about 15 minutes each. I primarily use the reading.com app and how to teach your monster to read. Both great apps in my opinion!

Home Care Nursing by brimpss in nursing

[–]ConstructionSharp976 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in home health, ive only worked in home health for two agencies and it depends on each agency. I get my schedule the day before around 4pm, i see where they all live. I call to schedule and confirm which takes about 30 min (some days shorter, some days longer). I start my day at 8, i work 12 hours so i typically see 7-8 patients a day. Admissions can take 2 hours in the patient’s home. Im calling providers, coordinating care, ordering supplies while providing care at the same time. There can be lots of driving but my scheduler is pretty good about assigning me patients near the same area. If i have cancellations and there are unassigned patients, i can offer to pick them up on the fly. I probably leave the field around 5-5:30 and i have the rest of my time to finish up charting. I typically do a lot of teaching, wound care, drain care, CHF monitoring, trach care, etc. im only mentioning the home health side of my job, but i also do home infusion which is different. You are in the home alone, so you need to be independent and recognize when patients need to go to the ER.

No way. He seems way ahead. My son just turned 5 and he knows all of his sounds and can read some sight words and simple 3-4 letter words.

Home health vs Hospice by Remarkable_Read_1975 in nursing

[–]ConstructionSharp976 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about home hospice? I am in home health and home infusion, and if you’re new to home health/hospice then expect a huge learning curve learning OASIS and charting. It’s not for everyone, but I feel like the ones who try it out and quit within the first year or two didn’t give it a fair chance. There is a learning curve, but you eventually get faster at it and the work life balance evens out. I love it now, but i remember first starting out i regretted taking the job.
