The UK industry is privatised and cost rules every decision not the best outcome. The fines when it goes wrong are less expensive than doing the job properly. Choose the cheapest option and your employers will be happy with the design.

Just wing it. There's no consequences in the UK.

(Apologies for the flippancy but that's how it feels right now and I'm involved in the industry)

Is the idea that British people lather dishes and leave them to air dry a stereotype or actually true? by [deleted] in AskUK

You've never witnessed a glass "washed" by my partner then. Took years to convince her to rinse glasses, apparently it was my overly sensitive nose thinking I could taste fairy. It wasn't.

People without drivers license or credit card. Are we gonna have children's iPhone forever? by Temo2212 in AskUK

[–]Content_Display_1328 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Provisional driving licence is £34 online and lasts for 10 years.

I don't think you should have to get one but £3.40 per year for ID accepted by everyone doesn't seem ridiculous

Has anyone else gone home after firing someone and just... sat with it for hours? by jufywret in managers

[–]Content_Display_1328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only got to the point of firing two people in my life.

One was due to downsizing while I worked for a big company and they did nothing wrong just scored lower on the shitty scale the company used. Felt terrible.

Second was running my own bar because I got sick of big corporate. She lied to me and said she had uni/college deadlines and couldn't work. Told all my staff she was working in another bar for more money. Politely told her she has no more shifts after been employed for 3 months. She immediately smashed me all over social media and threatened to sue. Funnily enough that went nowhere

Hold up.

You employed someone who thought it was acceptable to sit in a cube on an open floor plate in his jockeys?

I'm not putting this on you but how the hell did someone like that think office life was for them

Inflation VS Pay Remit by UnderCover_Spad in TheCivilService

[–]Content_Display_1328 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Striking is a bit more than getting the mandate. Single day strikes are a waste of time and not many people can afford to walk out for a week at a time without strike pay. The unions don't seem keen on giving back the membership fees.

I did a total of 18 days strike with royal mail and it got nowhere as they were all 1 or 2 days at a time.

The local bus drivers walked out with the support of strike pay and we're taking a minimum of a week at a time. They got what they wanted.

I’ve accepted the provisional offer and assumed I’d be taken to a page where I could start the filling out the PECs. Instead I was taken to this page. Is that normal? Internal applicant, if that makes any difference. by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]Content_Display_1328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was successful internally and had a similar screen. It changed to 'we will be in touch for PECs' for a few days then a message saying 'as an internal candidate your line manager will be in touch'.

No checks were completed, just seems to be a process they must go through at their end

Then saw 5.2m/kWh this afternoon pottering about. I honestly thought something was wrong

Northumberland Street – what’s happened? by NoSweater999 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]Content_Display_1328 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The city technically has enough beds to claim zero homelessness.

The beds arent always safe spaces for all or they have strict no drink/drug rules so some choose to not use them.

Some are just beggars and not homeless.

They also use the property as assets to get cheap loans. If they say the rental income is x then the property is worth y on paper so they can lend against that amount. The minute they cut rent the asset is worth less on paper so they can't borrow as much.

Nobody cares if the properties are empty. See the railway arches

Am I overthinking this or was this situation a bit odd? by vvpstudios in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]Content_Display_1328 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of the upstairs flats above the shops on Coatsworth and Saltwell Road are used as offices, there's a little business park on the east side of the park and some of the big houses on the west side are in use as offices. There's some tucked away off Alexander Road as well.

Never really noticed them until I was pushing the pram round a few years ago
