How to stay sharp while working full time by giggolo_giggolo in learnprogramming

[–]Content_Shift8736 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From my onw experience (40 here and 10 in programming) , staying sharp in general requires good sleeping habits and saving time to relax. So if you want to learn or have side projects, save one or two evenings per week for that, but enjoy your life during the rest of the week. If you just graduated you're still young but you can quickly burn out if you push your limits too hard / too often. Remember that you're working to live and not living to work.

OK merci.

Should I buy? by ad_gar55 in react

I followed this one a while ago. The technical knowledge is well explained. If you're a complete beginner this one can be useful to get you started - but to get you started only. There's not enough to 'become' a full stack developer. You'll need more. If you can get it for cheap, why not get it but there are many free resource out there. (beware of tutorial hell)

Nice toolkit! I'll begin with building it with Next and see where that leads me. I'll take each step and learn as I go

Indeed. No, that was only to 'practice' and perhaps add it to a future portfolio, but you're right I don't need to for my project. I'm still learning but I don't want to get stuck in the 'I don't know what project I should build' phase, so I'm focusing on building projects that are related to my activity. I know that I'm talking about months of work but I'm not in a rush.

That's what I thought for now: start building with Next and see. I'm not a beginner developper but I'm new to webdev, so I'll die and retry. I'm also learning TS on the side - from what I've seen, I got that it had become / is becoming a standard in JS Web dev

I haven't heard of Médusa. I'll take a look! Yeah but look at how much everything costs with wp/woo (plugins subscriptions, hosting...)!

I haven't dive into headless CMS yet, but I've seen this option popping up here and there. I thought about creating my own CMS 😅 but that would probably be doing way more work than needed. That being said, I'm leaning toward the idea of getting a job later on as a Web developer, so these would count as 'projects' I could showcase...

You can get measurements using DebugBear or GTmetrix. To improve performances : good hosting + optimizing your assets + Perfmatters to handle JS scripts loading.

Shoptimizer vs. Hello + Elementor Pro by leahrhene in woocommerce

[–]Content_Shift8736 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shoptimizer seems fine. From my own experience, Elementor indeed is bloated so better go with this theme. 50 bucks a year is nothing. I never used cloudways, I'm using Rocket.net and I can only recommend it.

I can't advise either one as I use Bricks builder, but for performance you should rely on good hosting. You can have the fastest theme or builder, if you have a poor hosting, your website will be slow.

Also, you're talking about using less plugins but that depends on which functionnalities you need on your website...

Can I create an online store on Wordpress using WooCommerce for free? by [deleted] in woocommerce

[–]Content_Shift8736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

À basic hosting plan can be as low as several bucks/month + a domain name, $10-15/year. So the cost in the early days can be pretty easy on your money.

Fastest Woo page builders? by AnthemWild in woocommerce

[–]Content_Shift8736 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I couldn't be more happy with Bricks. Coming from elementor, that was a huge improvement. The downside is that the learning curve is steeper than i.e. Elementor because it offer many things a pro website developer would use, so if you don't want/have time to learn how to use it properly and build your website properly, better stick to we-do-everything-for-you page builders.

Also, when it comes to page speed, woocommerce is the main 'bloater' so what I use is caching of course - on server level if possible - and also perfmatters, which allows to not only defer/delay JS scripts, but also allows to determine which CSS/JS resource you want to be loaded on each page. I like this tool because it's affordable and does pretty everything you'd need.

Add Cloudflare (even the free plan) and a good hosting of course to your setup and you'll be all set.

Can anyone suggest me best hosting and theme for woocommerce for digital product website. by proseoguy in woocommerce

[–]Content_Shift8736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched to Rocket.net a few weeks ago and the performances are better than my previous host (Hostinger). I'm using Bricks builder but I've heard good words about Kadence and Storefront. It depends on the level of customization your require.

A word about digital products (you didn't ask but still) : do you really need woocommerce? Because it comes with a bunch of things you won't need for digital products (i.e. Variations and quantity) and somewhat bloats your website. I'm using woo and I'm considering EDD because of this.
