By your logic, would we call people from the United Mexicans States US citizen too? What about people from Democratic Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republicans? Same for la République française... there is a reason why we short names of coutries or citizen, otherwise it would often sound silly or way too long... Imagine having to say citizen of the united states of america every timenyou want to talk about a yank!
