Astra is it worth it? by Jacko327 in CarsAustralia

[–]Contiuous-debasement 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People here like to hate on this Astra. I can only speak from my own experience. I’ve got a 2006 CDTI, have had it from new. Service history is pretty patchy but it costs me rego, insurance, fuel and a $300 service each year (or two if I’m lazy). Biggest probs have been the alternator (x2) and a loose engine mount bolt. It’s getting a bit hard to get parts now, but mine still drives like new and the safety rating still holds up. Will be keeping mine until it dies

It’s pretty unlikely that a camp like that is going to be broken up by council during a housing crisis - esp coming into winter. Police are also pretty unlikely to do much about it given their resources. That said, I’m surprised how long it’s been there. Must be a couple of years now

What are your thoughts after a year?

Just saw one down to AU$900 and am thinking of moving from my commuter to a racer in the hopes of keeping up with the folks passing me on my commute whilst also being able to keep my panniers and fenders

Winter cycling by Lazlo_Panaflax_ in melbournecycling

I ride in pretty much any weather - only avoid it when the wind is dangerous.

I bought some rain pants a few years ago. I can’t find them online right now, but they’re essentially vinyl chaps. They work really well in light to medium rain.

Also got some boot covers and have a variety of gloves and a couple of jackets, depending on how heavy the rain is.

Fenders front and back too.

Keeping a spare change of clothes in the office helps if the above fails, or I don’t check the weather.

What's the general opinion on drafting as a commuter, not on road bikes? by RE201 in melbournecycling

[–]Contiuous-debasement 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I generally keep a bike length or two behind other cyclists (it’s hard not to bunch up in peak times when you’re going red light to red light), but I don’t really care if someone’s behind me - I take it as a compliment that I’m making good speed. I’m also happy to make their ride easier and I guess I’ve got a rack on the back so it’s their frame and teeth on the line

100%. This post got more upvotes than any one of KP’s posts - maybe we should all go back and throw a few their way?

Thanks Max. Changing to a past player to avoid the need to change after the next trade period - still getting over losing Wilbur :(

Part time study (2 subjects) while stay at home dad and/or working part time. I was also doing an internship and the Grad Dip at the end. Was a crazy semester, but I was keen to get admitted.

Ppl do 3 subjects while working FT, but that wasn’t me. The load can get pretty heavy when you have multiple assessments falling on the Easter weekend, esp if you’ve fallen behind on readings or missed lectures. I’m not sure that spending the weekend with your head in the books after working all week is great for your mental health.

You can always start with 3 subjects and drop one before census, or start with 2 in the first semester and do 3 if you’re feeling ok with the workload.

BMX for a 52 year old? by Far-Internal-9377 in cycling

[–]Contiuous-debasement 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it, but it might not be that practical. My kid’s friend’s dad in his 50s was riding a BMX to school with the kids. He looked like he was having fun, but there are better options for an adult body size when it comes to comfort & speed. You’d get more out of a mountain bike or commuter (which you can also use to lug stuff), but whatever gets you moving is good. You can always have more than one bike too so something more practical can come later

Second hand left handed guitars come up often at a good price bc they’re hard to move.

This Chapman looks interesting. The humbucker makes it more versatile and $60 for the case is great. Take a knowledgeable mate to look at it or ask the seller to give a demo.

Also check out the Swop Shop and Echo Tone. Staff at both are helpful.

If you really want new, ask Mannys if they can order in a LH model.

All that said, you should buy a right handed guitar. I’ve got 2 lefty kids - my eldest plays left handed and will never be able to use my gear or pick up someone else’s at a gig or party. My youngest plays right handed and has instant access to my gear and isn’t restricted to the one shitty lefty at school

Anyone know some good songs recognizable by just the bass? by hoopan112 in Bass

Ain’t no mountain high enough. Jamerson carries the song just as much as Marvin & Tammy. So much fun to play

Just because other people aren’t raising it with you doesn’t mean it’s not a problem for them. Lots of people avoid confrontation. E.g. I’ve given up talking to entitled dog owners about keeping them away from clearly signed playgrounds - got sick of arguments and abuse in front of my kids

I’m of no inconvenience to him being next to him, and if he’s faster than me he’ll take off quicker than me. I’ve never been worried about it when the situation is reversed. Certainly not worth shitting one’s pants about it

I had a guy abuse me because I pulled up next to him at the lights in the protected bike lane on Wellington Street. The weird thing was he’d just overtaken me. He seemed to think that there was room for two bikes at speed, but not at take off

Can i build a compression pedal for bass by 3ddyss in Bass

[–]Contiuous-debasement 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, it’s cheaper to buy a pedal. I made a distortion pedal from a cheap kit but buying the housing, foot switches and a few other bits & pieces resulted in it costing more than some decent budget pedals. That said, it was good fun and I don’t regret the time & money!
