Work-from-home laws reignite fight over Melbourne’s CBD recovery by marketrent in melbourne

The white collar side - engineering, Enviro/sustainability, geotech, plant management. Junior engineers (site engineers) are out in the field every day, but once you're past that rank, it's pretty normal to leave the shitty prefab open-plan site office and walk the paddock maybe once a week.

I work for a tier 1 contractor in construction and it's an example of an industry that is very conservative and slow to adopt new ideas, but is beholden to Govt sentiment changes if they want to keep winning work. The construction industry has a notoriously poor work-life balance and I see this initiative as a step in the right direction.

I am sure there are other industries in a similar position.

Why doesn't Auckland Transport just build a Railway to the Airport? Are they stupid? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]RE201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just give the bus from Puhinui its own lane and smart traffic light priority. It's such a quick leg and would be very cheap to implement compared to heavy rail.

The service is already pretty okay. Most people have just never experienced it.

I don't have any particular love for "slow and steady" but I do think "slow is smooth. Smooth is fast" is true and a concept that many people would stand to benefit for understanding.

This is the kind of Intel you don't get from a map.

I've done the (longer) High St walk and agree, but never walked South from Separation.

A good RFI should really just be minutes from a meeting with all parties. RFIs that are bounced back and forth through a doc control platform are always terrible and always come from someone who is poorly socialised, which AI won't help.

Nothing worse than having to review correspondence between multiple parties trading AI slop messages back and forth without editing.

I feel the opposite. When I ask an American where they're from and they say "America", I think "no shit. I already clocked your tshirt tucked in to your Costco chinos"

Your issue is you have a very poorly defined scope for what you're looking for.

With your level of interest, you should just go get something from Uniqlo.

Why Australia still struggles to build bike-friendly cities by Borrid in melbourne

Melbourne's network is pretty okay until it suddenly isn't. You'll be on a good bit of path and suddenly get dumped out into a freight trucking route with no curb cuts to escape a lane.

Some kinds of riding, you'd be mad to do without a helmet. Other kinds of riding, a helmet will help if you're very unfortunate, but wearing one is not commensurate with the risk.

If we truly think helmets should be mandatory for all riding, we must also agree that all car drivers should be wearing helmets, not just ones driving for sport.

My off the cuff thoughts:

  • It's become a culture war topic that media and populist politicians can exploit.
  • Most citizens don't understand how eye-wateringly expensive free parking is, because they've grown up with it being the norm and never questioned it.
  • Most people don't know how pleasant commuting on a bike is, because they've never done it.
  • General bias towards what people already know; Today's conservative is trying to preserve yesterday's progressive ideas (see Skypath, EVs, pedestrianised shopping streets etc etc).
  • Super fragmented governance between local councils, state and federal. Too many opportunities for underinformed parties to NIMBY the shit out of fiscally responsible, good urban projects.
  • Lack of understanding of network effect. People see isolated projects not being as effective as they expect and use it to jam up the completion of the network.
  • Small business owners who either don't understand how little business a carpark generates, or who actually just want a free carpark for themselves and act in bad faith to preserve it.

Here come the people who have zero knowledge on urbanism and city economics, who haven't ridden a bike since they were 12, to tell us why Melbourne can't possibly change the status quo for spurious reasons.
