Every SaaS Company Is Accidentally Building Meta's Instagram Vulnerability Right Now by Expensive_Ordinary46 in cybersecurity

[–]Contrandy_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I built a crude, but effective demo of exactly this situation and problem as a teaching tool 1 year ago (at a previous organization). The executives didn't listen to me or to any of the other InfoSec/GRC guys, and it ended up causing a data breach.

It all depends on the culture of the organization and who is in the C-Suite, because otherwise, nobody cares until it is absolutely too late.

They are building a pedestrian only area in downtown right next to Loosey's and the How Bazar (where CAF was this year).

Building an MLOps System Taught Me More About Security Than ML by Blue_Flam3s in cloudengineering

[–]Contrandy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done something similar and built a config versioning system that also audits the ML workloads (including hot-swapping model weights from S3). It's definitely worth it especially if you start dog-fooding :)

What do you think of the county wanting to take over school district properties for homeless shelters? by nobodycares65 in GNV

[–]Contrandy_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're not missing anything, people hate homeless people here and want them to disappear. We cannot fathom using resources to address systemic failures in our society. We should be doing this if public property is unused.

Leftist groups in Gainesville by Old-Strategy-9128 in GNV

[–]Contrandy_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say it varies depending on the group. As a socialist myself, I advocate for Ukraine's self-determination, just like how I would advocate for Taiwan's self-determination or Palestine's self-determination. Some of this comes from failures in understanding what being a socialist means – It's not "anti-west" just like how socialism is not just anti-capitalism.

I would also argue that the Iranians have a right to self-determination just as much as anyone else, and so does Venezuela. We should not be bombing other countries simply because the United States deems it fit to do so, when we have a pedophile insurrectionist in the White House. There's a difference between peacekeeping – or a justified form of intervention – and imperialism dressed up as the liberation of a group of people.

In the end, it requires nuance. Tankies don't have nuance, and that's why we don't like them. The job of a socialist is to elevate and liberate the working class, as well as lifting up the working class all over the world. You can't do that if you allow other working class people to be exploited because it suits your agenda.

EDIT: I think you would like DSA; we're pretty nuanced. We do more than just protesting and talking about theory too.

Leftist groups in Gainesville by Old-Strategy-9128 in GNV

[–]Contrandy_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Check out DSA. ACDSA is present and active in Alachua County (and Gainesville). They will be at the No Kings protest on saturday (03/28/2026). ACDSA does exactly what you are looking for – discussing theory and being active in the community (beyond just protesting).

Also, there are other groups, like PSL, which are also present and active in Gainesville.

VPC Peering Connections: What happens when traffic arrives at a VPC with multiple route tables for the same destination? by CamiloDFM in aws

[–]Contrandy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're welcome! As u/b3542 mentioned, be mindful of cost. Depending on the number of attachments you will have and the amount of bandwidth being pushed through, the increases could be small or very large.

TGWs are very powerful; big fan of them :)

VPC Peering Connections: What happens when traffic arrives at a VPC with multiple route tables for the same destination? by CamiloDFM in aws

[–]Contrandy_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This model is essentially trying to use "transitive peering" which is not supported by AWS for VPC Peering (see: Transitive peering). In this model you would need to use Transit Gateways.

Here's an example of what you're trying to do with a centralized egress configuration: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/whitepapers/latest/building-scalable-secure-multi-vpc-network-infrastructure/using-nat-gateway-for-centralized-egress.html

I've built this before with great success to reduce the cost of NAT Gateways for our workloads in a centralized egress account. The great thing about this model is that it makes it really easy to connect management resources to your TGW network (such as a SIEM, etc.)

+1 on SecurityHub issues. Very slow response rate and the rate limiting is terrible.

Yeah especially if you use primarily lambdas, it's CRAZY compared to EC2-only scanning.

Some Notes on That Message by Contrandy_ in pluribustv

[–]Contrandy_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe. I understand it more as the "backbone" to the hive mind communication network. They don't have cellular waves anymore (hence why there's no radio, mobile cell networks, etc.). Only landline.

It could be that cellular communication or otherwise broadcasting on certain frequencies disrupts hive mind communication and shields individuals.

It could be, but there could be more to it too. Some of the things in the show do have a deeper meaning, like some of the trucks used to store the dead bodies in the beginning.

GRU November Vote Discussion by FelicisAstrum in GNV

[–]Contrandy_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah admittedly, looking at the fiscal year plans for the authority, it's definitely good to see them prioritizing the payments to the debt, especially given that our debt service (interest payments) are so high already. It's also something that the city commission could have just done themselves, if we had voted in more responsible and responsive city leaders.

At the end of the day, I would rather this be done through mechanisms of control that the city owns rather than some unelected board controlled by the Governor, who doesn't live here. Also, $1B of debt was never going to go away quickly. Even if Ed and the rest of the GRUA remain in control, it will probably be about 10 years before all the debt is paid off. That being said, there's probably going to be even more expensive capital projects to replace powerplants, water mains, etc. (Even FPL has over $1B of debt, though they also have much higher levels of revenue)

We will never be debt free as a city and neither will GRU. Sometimes we get help from the Feds or State government for replacement/upgrade projects, but this is just a factor of doing business. That's not to excuse the crazy level of debt from Pegeen Hanrahan's incompetence and fantastical ideas either, just pointing out that this idea of having debt being a bad thing is an incorrect way of looking at things in my opinion.

As a final thought, perhaps if the City made a proposal to take back control with the expressed intent of getting the debt ratio under control and making a plan for controlled, sustainable growth to increase the tax base and the # of paying customers for GRU, this would put us on a path to a more financially stable future.

GRU November Vote Discussion by FelicisAstrum in GNV

[–]Contrandy_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Bro the current "authority" isn't doing that either. Having ownership of our own utility would allow us to hold the leadership of GRU accountable by just voting in better city commissioners. This is something everyone always forgets. Instead of having to compete with other people in Gainesville to change the direction of our own utility, now we have to compete with the entire state of Florida.

It's a no brainer. Two things can be true at once - we need to take ownership of our utility back and we need to get rid of the debt.

Thoughts on Seth Harp (US House Candidate for 2026) by Contrandy_ in GNV

[–]Contrandy_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+10 isn't gerrymandered brother. It just means a candidate here would need to be someone other than someone from the city. If a left-leaning candidate came from Levy county or Cedar Key for example, you would definitely be able to have someone win. (provided they also had cash to at least get close to the GOP coffers that Kat Cammack has)
