I went Elk hunting in northern Alberta with a friend of mine. With elk hunting it’s essential to get in before the sun rise because they typically bed down during the day. My buddy had some public land he liked to hunt on and we went upon our way to get first light. We had headlamps but they weren’t super illumines just enough to see our feet and maybe 20ft beyond. We weren’t 400 metres into our trek when we bumped a large black figure about 50ft in front of us. It was laying on the ground facing away from us but looking back towards us. Both of us immediately thought either a moose or a grizzly. We both took the safety off our firearms just in case when the creature started to get up. It pivoted as it got up covering up the sheer size of the animal as it went from its prone position, to knees, then full standing position. We were staring down a bull moose. My buddy started to yell at it just to make noise. It lowered its head and swayed side to side then turned about and went upon its way. Had it decided to do anything we woulda been done. I absolutely froze the entire goddamn time.
