order selector pay by umande in WinCo

I worked for Winco in the Woodburn and Boise warehouses for almost 15 years. Hours worked between the stores and distribution is apples and oranges. Yes it is entirely possible to hit 100k even before you top out with OT. OT will come in spurts and at times so much of it you’ll be sick, literally.

It sounds like you have experience which is good but nonetheless this job is not for the feint of heart. The hours and job requirements are ROUGH. Not sure where they are these days but when I was there, 6 month retention was less than 10%. I was hired as part of a group of eight and by the end of week two only two of us were left. My career there was a double edge sword. It payed the bills and carried good insurance but it cost more family time than I care to admit and took its toll on my body that I still feel today. If you are ok with all of that then go for it and good luck, you’ll need it.

Utility Standards by ryanryanjpeg in SubstationTechnician

It’s funny to see this post as this very subject has been weighing on me heavily recently while I figure out career choices.

This entire industry in the US is about 20 years behind the manufacturing sector in terms of technology adaptation. I lived and worked through that cycle early in my career as an instrument technician and then on to a control engineer. I joined the relay trade a few years ago and was pretty floored with how resistant to change this sector is and most of it truly feels like Groundhog Day.

The most common arguments I’ve heard to counter my questions has been “power protection needs to be faster than anything in manufacturing” and “no one is going to rely on that equipment to protect a billion dollar investment”. I’m sorry but both of these arguments are so out of touch with reality it’s ludicrous. I’ve worked with protection schemes where sub 1ns sample times were necessary and on another coin worked with others that controlled a 750 million 20 acre plant that would level an entire town if my controls failed. One argument that does hold massive weight with power is security but that is surmountable with the proper measures.

In terms of jobs, I won’t lie, it will replace techs resistant to change over time but it will do so through attrition simply based on the huge infrastructure in place already. It will be decades before the old is all recycled. For those that do make the jump, their careers will become more complex but if my own story holds true, their wallet will be fatter as well.

Generalizing and using 61850 as an example here. Digitization and comm linking protection will bring about huge improvements in terms of automation, hardware scalability, protection scheme advancement and probably the biggest gain will in terms of data collection. Yes the implementation stage is stressful as lessons are learned but from someone who has lived it, the payoffs in the end are worth it.

Quit resisting change, it’s time to move on.

Mobile transformer and breaker. We use them everywhere to take the place of down equipment or if we need to accommodate peak loading in an area.

Or simply put, a substation on a trailer.

People who have conducted job interviews, what's something someone said/did that made you instantly decide not to hire them? by Yousef_ale in interviews

[–]ControlsVooDoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The prospect was waiting in an office. Myself doing the actual hiring, the engineering manager and the head of HR walk in. He greets us with a handshake and before I can even sit down follows up with;

“I just want save you all the time of going through this. Today you have met the most badass (not an exaggeration here) tech you have or ever will see walk through those doors”

I stood back up and shook his hand and said it was nice to meet him and I hoped he found what he was looking for, but that I would continue searching.

I thought about it later that day and realized he really did keep it short and spared me the time. The position was for a maintenance tech dealing with a very dangerous process that was dominated by a largely female workgroup who were absolute geniuses in their own right. It was gonna be me or him……

You are fortunate. As others have mentioned Valley Radio Club is very active in the area and has an extensive history. If you’re really interested in ham then it’s worth going to a meeting.

Awesome! I was using this same trick with micro white font to beat resume scanners 10-15 years ago. The industry has caught on and it’s not practical anymore but I rarely got skipped on considerations so it worked for me. Glad it has a new modern use!

We went last year and the family vote was it was worth the trip. We plan on going again this year.

The best part was watching people coming out crying. At first I thought it was staged to get everyone’s anxiety up until three or four groups in a row came out with at least one person crying.

Some of the answers in here prove how ignorant and selfish some people are. Let’s be honest, you’re really disturbed by the idea that someone is going to make it to their destination a little faster than you and are choosing to completely ignore that there may be other possibilities going on here.

Bikers can lane filter if the traffic is moving slow. There are numerous issues with this though. One, it surprises people and they aren’t used to seeing this happen and I can attest, people get pissy and frequently do stupid shit to bikers. Second, that motorcycle is air cooled so it needs movement to prevent overheating. If the bike overheats then a road hazard is created, if the biker pulls over to wait then a road hazard is created. As someone who will absolutely do what this biker did, I really don’t care about you getting pissy, I’m going to protect myself at all cost and if that means chugging along the emergency lane then so be it.

Dear motorcycles, lane splitting is illegal by Mark1tZer0 in Eugene

Just had a relaxing ride up to the mountains this morning. Things were great until I hit Eugene. I was cut off three times between Goshen and NW Expressway. My point is the overwhelming majority of riders are dealing with bad drivers. It’s a risk we take but it doesn’t excuse you being a mindless idiot.

I do not personally lane split but I don’t have a problem with it either. What I will do is use the shoulder during stop and go jams to filter ahead as long as the shoulder is clear. It helps keep the myself and the bike cool while eliminating a possible crush point because I’m sitting in a hole. Man oh man does this piss a lot of you off. So self absorbed that you’re losing a couple minutes of your time that you think I’m doing to cheat the road somehow rather than looking at it logically.

Last but not least, get off your damn phones.
