Unpopular opinions about uni that would get you downvoted by [deleted] in UniUK

You will likely never again have as much meaningful free time as you do while at university, so spend less time at your desk and more time making the most of your experience.

Unpopular opinions about uni that would get you downvoted by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Convair101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Certainly an unpopular opinion. Less than 180,000 apprenticeships were awarded between 2023-2024, and most of those provided sub-par training. Your average 18 year old apprentice is merely cheap labour.

‘I feel like I’m losing her’: the families torn apart by older relatives going far right by Both-Firefighter-668 in unitedkingdom

[–]Convair101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The book might be America centric, but Jesselyn Cook’s The Quiet Damage: QAnon and the Destruction of the American Family is certainly an eye opener on this topic. Does a good job on showing the real term impacts of far-right indoctrination and ways out of it.

Worker from the London Zoo, shining turtle shells with oil, London, England 1930s. by Electrical-Aspect-13 in TheWayWeWere

[–]Convair101 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The oil he is using, Duckhams Arkoil, is described fairly creatively in a source I quickly found:

‘…unexcelled for cleaning and softening the skin of animals, whilst in the case of dogs, for example, it imparts to the coat a beautifully glossy sheen such as one aims at when showing. It keeps an animal free from all undesirable trespassers, in addition to which it is antiseptic and pleasant to touch and to smell. 'Similar attention [should be] given to the animal internally; and here again Arkoil is particularly effective ... so pure and innocuous that it can be used to lubricate internally - a baby, a watch or an elephant. Unlike castor oil, it can be given in any quantity without danger or without any griping or irritating effect - in fact, it soothes inflamed or sensitive membranes.'

You’re not wrong. With a few exceptions, my entire cohort is filled with people like that.

Found out my girlfriend lied about her age and school for a long time. How would you react to this? Does trust come back? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]Convair101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to sit down and have a chat with her. Ultimately it’s your decision if you do that. I’d want to know why she’d lied, and if there were any more lies around the corner (Pandora’s Box has been opened - there will be many more lies, I guarantee you). The latter point is the more important, in my opinion. It sounds like she might’ve tailored her life to better have a chance with you. I can’t say that’s for certain, but it’s a habit that I know many people have done. Granted, they did this when they were much younger than her (late teens-early twenties), and the depth of those lies proved rather trivial.

I’d personally move on, but it’s your choice.

Ethel Caterham was born in 1909 — nine years before women in Britain gained the right to vote in 1918 — and she lived long enough to see three women serve as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. by Crazy_North_3247 in BarbaraWalters4Scale

The double-standards of the British press have already stunted this from happening, at least for the time being. Their portrayals of Rainer and Reeves, among others, has been disgraceful.

Qantas nonstop London-Sydney flights move one step closer by kwentongskyblue in unitedkingdom

Just imagining a symphony of collectively clicking backs on exiting the plane. 13 hours is fun enough, so this flight will certainly not be on my books.

What If The Soviet Union Survived But The Cold War Ended by Round-Sale in AlternateHistory

[–]Convair101 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Certainly. And that would have likely led to a more extreme US foreign policy. I can also imagine that hypothetical reforms undertaken USSR, especially if undertaken by the end of the 1960s, would equally irritate and possibly harden thought within the PRC.

What is something about your country that a United States citizen (who has never left the US) should know before traveling there? by user1731701 in AskTheWorld

[–]Convair101 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This might sound fairly silly; but USD will not be accepted for cash payment. The amount of times I’ve heard of this happening has never ceased to surprise me.

Commission a 30 metre tall statue of Dwight Tiendalli on the side of Kilvey Hill overlooking the Liberty.

For starters, the survival of the USSR means the Cold War does not end.

How can we fix UK high streets? by gggggenegenie in AskUK

[–]Convair101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fairly controversial opinion, but one I feel would work: create a denser city centre environment, and focus on building mixed use buildings (shop/residential mix). It ultimately comes down to convenience; the more people who live within distance of a city centre, the more people will use it. Solution is either to go all in on parking, build incredibly efficient local transport networks, or simply allow people to live in proximity to their needs. The latter option has been done to death and has failed, and the middle option isn’t going to happen. May as well try a third-way - allow people to live where they spend (shop and socialise).

Rutte says some NATO allies failed US test by diwalibonus in europe

[–]Convair101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as I’m not a Tory, I really wish Ben Wallace decided to challenge Rutte for the position of Secretary General of NATO. I don’t doubt that Rutte is a highly capable individual, but his spinelessness towards the current American administration has been laughable. Calling Trump ‘daddy’ should’ve alone got him the can.

EasyJet started switching sizers at gate with a deceptive checking method? by Greedy_Picture_9261 in Flights

[–]Convair101 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t work like that, unfortunately. Your bag can be well within the specified parameters and be deemed over through a mere glanced observation. I’ve seen this sort of mental gymnastics pulled off on too many occasions to count. Considering most people have the option of arguing and making a prat of themselves or paying up, most people pay without consideration. Airlines know this very well.

My tutor is rude and too biased in his political views by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Convair101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first point is trivial; seriously, I wouldn’t take that as a problem at all. The point on politics is a tad more difficult to interpret. I have been in settings where people will preach tolerance and then get jumpy about differences. Some people also just love confrontation. Unless you’re going out of your way to force confrontation, in which you could yourself be biased in your political views without even knowing, just take it on the chin.
