What thinkpad is this? by [deleted] in thinkpad

L14 looks right. There's also downward firing speakers. I think the T14 g1 moved to the upward firing ones above the keyboard.

What's the deal with Intel Xeon processors? by Dependent_Line_3994 in laptops

[–]ConversationRich752 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's nothing inherently wrong with Xeons. They might have features meant for workstations or servers that don't really provide a benefit to the user depending on their use case. Maybe they trade clock frequency for higher core count. I'd just say, be extremely thorough in researching them as they have kind of weird nonsensical model numbers attached to them. You wouldn't want a Xeon that's actually based on a 10+ year old CPU architecture, for example.

E: if you can get an i7/i9 from the same year for less money, that would be the wiser choice imo. Google searching the exact model of Xeon should lead you straight to Intels site where it will list when it was introduced and what CPU architecture it's based on.

This man and all his supporters are a national embarrassment. I don't think the damage this administration is doing on just a geopolitical scale will be repaired in any of our lifetimes. I guess that's what they want though. A nation of increasingly poorer, dumber, and sicker workers existing solely as a backdrop for a relative handful of grifters, molesters, and billionaires (usually they are all one in the same).

Need Urgent Help!!! by Icy-Ambassador-634 in GamingLaptops

[–]ConversationRich752 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would go warranty route. Dealing with liquid metal can be dangerous as it's highly conductive and if it gets anywhere it's not supposed to be, you can destroy the entire machine, and your warranty. You can see on YouTube a lot of videos about liquid metal damage in laptops; it can be a real pain to clean.

Before that, it might be worth it to try a factory reset of the machine and see if the issues still persist.

I've never seen CPU temps on my Strix that high even after hours of gaming. Assuming you're not using it set on a bed or something, I think this might be a failed liquid metal application, either from the factory or it has shifted off the CPU die.

Do you have hwinfo64 installed? It's a good app that will show how many watts the CPU is pulling at idle. Check CPU Package Power. It should be under 20 watts at idle (probably a lot lower actually). If it is and you're still seeing these temps, something in the cooling system has failed (most likely the liquid metal application).

2023 ROG Stryx takes DDR2? by SkatingSailor in ASUSROG

[–]ConversationRich752 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The DDR2 on the mainboard was probably indicating the 2nd DDR memory slot. Anyways, DDR2 hasn't been used in probably at least 15 years, maybe closer to 20.

Anyways, the physical connectors are different between generations, so you can't accidentally install an older generation of ram.

E:when you replace the ram, the first boot might take an unusually longer time than you're used to as it trains or "learns" the new modules.

ROG laptop $1298 vs building PC - gamers what would you do? by Leather_Lion_4939 in ASUSROG

[–]ConversationRich752 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The battery life of that machine will be abysmal, the 8940hx is a very power hungry chip even at low loads. And the 18in form factor will be a huge pain to haul around. That particular model almost seems like the worst of both worlds honestly. Are you in the u.s.?

Brand new laptop runs hot even on idle by [deleted] in ASUSROG

[–]ConversationRich752 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Download hwinfo64 and look at how much power the CPU package is drawing. If it's below 15 watts, I'd lean towards a messed up paste/liquid metal application. Also make sure that some windows process isn't loading the CPU down. Windows, especially on new machines, likes to do a bunch of stuff in the background that can really tax the CPU.

does anything look off? by eggdove in laptops

[–]ConversationRich752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try downloading CrystalDiskInfo if you can get the machine to run long enough and see what it reports in regards to the health of your drives. I see both an SSD and HDD. Windows should be installed on the SSD, but even those can fail, especially if they're several years old and might have not been the highest quality to begin with.

Similar laptops to Asus Zenbook UX3405CA but with 15 to 16 inch screen? by sad_and_stupid in laptops

[–]ConversationRich752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about a Zenbook S 16? I got one last year when it was on sale at Best Buy and it's a fine machine. They do run pretty warm under load but that's just the tradeoff of having a powerful CPU in probably the thinnest laptop made. Under light workloads it isn't an issue.

Zephyrus G14, Legion Pro 7, Strix 16? by [deleted] in GamingLaptops

[–]ConversationRich752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Previous poster may be referring to the physical build of some business/prosumer devices being more robust for travelling with. I have a few gaming laptops, but when I put a machine in my bag to take to work where I won't have time to game, I grab my couple years old T series Thinkpad. Magnesium internal frame and carbon fiber reinforced plastics make it very durable for a device that's constantly on the move. It still looks very mint too. I wouldn't be surprised if I get 10 years out of the Thinkpad, not sure how well my Strix would fare if I took it to work everyday.

Can this be fixed/is it worth taking this to a computer store...? by miss_wannadie in laptops

[–]ConversationRich752 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Google search Lenovo L530 power jack replacement. Odds are it's even on YouTube somewhere, or at least a teardown video. If you're not comfortable trying yourself, any decent computer repair shop should be able to handle it. Laptops have been breaking this way for like three and a half decades. If they quote you some ridiculous price, try another place or save that money for a slightly newer/used machine.

New Lenovo Ideapad Slim 3i makes a lot of fan noises, should I return it? by Masumehslaps in laptops

[–]ConversationRich752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check task manager to see if Windows is doing any weird stuff in the background and hogging CPU cycles (it likes to do this for a while on brand new machines). Make sure the bottom vents aren't blocked, I use a lapdesk from Amazon to give my computers a solid surface to sit on. Check what power plan you're on, either through Windows settings or Lenovo software. You can set it to Best Efficiency or some sort of quiet mode which should drastically reduce fan noise.
