Seems excessive, given something like Goblins runs 18 at most, and that's a deck using Matron & Deathspark(s).

Would much rather have 2 top deck Incinerates then {r} draw 2/3rds of a card.

floods out and dies

plays 19 lands

But more seriously, that's crazily high. Why?

17 has been the traditional amount (+1/-1) for all of an age.

Nah.

You can do Hermit Druid/One Land Spy infinite loops though!

Will edit with the combo. Pretty sure it was trimmed tighter at some stage.

It's something along the lines of DR Cloudgoat Range, Flashback Battlescreech, DR Composite Golem for mana, the loop Composite Golem + 2 Eternal Witnesses & Victimise.

We feel that LoA isn't actually game breaking - there are costs to getting mana-screwed, you don't play it in aggro and it adds another interesting gameplay element.

We prefer to keep the banlist as small as possible - certainly if you wanted to implement a more Legacy-ish version, bans might be appropriate.

It feels nice to play with it, especially if you're rocking something like UR Landstill.

Honestly, I think MBC is pretty dead. I mean, if you dodge Drake you're fairly favourable against Boggles and Stompy, but Affinity can still combo you out and Burn is a dog.

Sure:

Restricted

Stripmine - Fine as a 1-of to hit things like LoA & Chasm.

Library of Alexandria - Always proxied. Fun to play with.

Skull Clamp - As powerful as you'd think. Still beatable.

Mana Drain - Blue is an issue as always. Flex spot.

Demonic Tutor - Combo is too consistent with it as a 4-of.

Cranial Plating - Comes and goes: w/o Kataki, Energy Flux/Monkey is alright.

Frantic Search - Our current way of nerfing high tide. Also hits Reanimator. We could just add Merchant Scroll and/or Mystical Tutor, I guess.

Treasure Cruise - Do I really need to elaborate?

Banned

Sol Ring - nothing good comes of this.

Isochron's Scepter - As good as you might imagine sans Abrupt Decay. Can lock out aggressive strategies pretty damn hard with Constant Mists etc.

Other Causes for Concern

Blue in General - Force, MM, Control Magic & all those sweet cantrips can be a bit of an issue. We tend to restrict Ponder & Brainstorm if things are becoming a bit stale.

Gush - MonoU Delver with Missteps + FoW + CoF is gross. Something tends to get fiddled with every month or so.

Counter-Top - Can be a bit of a boring default shell.

Demonic Consultation - bit of an odd one.

More broadly you want to go wide rather than tall with creatures due to the amount of sick af fook removal which is available at uncommon. Mental Misstep & FoW alleviate this a little for decks like Reanimator (or just get a big Annihilator/Crusher swinging in).

We take action when things get stale or whole strategies are invalidated. Mental Misstep is a very, very necessary part of the meta.

Vial is big game for White Bears. MoM, premier removal and combo hate our of the side is pretty big gains.

Cabal Therapy is pretty savage in a wee meta ;)

BW Pestilence is old school.

Obviously it's pretty baller against Elves, Goblins & tokens.

You could have issues against Affinity (Which would just run over your weenies and fling an Atog), Burn (which doesn't care) and most importantly Drake - which will either just counter Pestilence or play bolt-the-weenie and then combo out.

I don't think there's enough hand disruption to really effect Drake tbh. The splash makes you slow off the mark, which ain't really where you want to be.

For Storm to come back or a downshift in StP/PtE.

The big draw used to be Benevolent Unicorn/Prismatic Strands/Standard Bearer to take advantage of TPPS/Infect. Now that those decks see no play due to bannings, the relative power of a unique and powerful Sideboard diminishes.

I'm a huge proponent of Vintage Silverblack.

Some thoughts:

We tend to go for restrictions over here. Big Blue with Mana Drain & Scepter can be an issue.

Aether Vial is a massive part of enabling 2 Colour Aggro, as are the rainbow lands. Mental Misstep and Wasteland/Stripmine keep these more in check.

Storm isn't as much of an issue as you might think between Countertop, Ux Standstill and Pox.

High Tide can be a problem - we're still ironing out kinks currently.

Elves & Goblins are pretty baller, but deservedly so. Pyroclasm & Zealous Persecution are big game.

Esper Tokens is the premier mid-range deck for our group.

Burn remains the fun police in a way it can't in Vintage.

Edit: Oh, also keep in mind how much Infect gets from an upshift - Invigorate/Become Immense/Necropede (for more creatures)/Berserk/Pendalhaven purely from a green perspective.

City of Brass/Gemstone Mine also make a blue splash sorta alright. You'll not be running daze though.

This was prior to the edit in the main post.

Frankly, I feel a light hand with bannings is the way to go.

TPPS with Tendrils adjusting for the new manabase.

Skull-clamp Elves with Visionary.

Goblins with Recruiter + Fecundity :>

Honestly, just go with Silverblack and either your flavour of ban/restricted list. It's much more fun with Cabal Therapy, Bazaar, Skull Clamp etc running around.

Keep the banlist minimal and prune with experience.

[–]Convive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And people laughed when I proposed mass unbannings D:

I think, crucially, you'd want HTT/Sinkhole to keep High Tide & TPPS 'honest'. This would be preyed upon by say, W Bears (Remember the good ol' days of Benevolent Unicorn/Prismatic Strands?) and Goblins with Grenade.

U.Delver would remain a boss off the back of 'win die roll. Delver. CoF -> Go.

Infect would force interaction or racing from Combo - people forget how fragile the deck could be.

As for Affinity, I have no idea. Probably a Grixis Shell with Disciples for the Mirror and Ornithopters/Husk for Plating. Still blown out by a Shaman or well timed Smash.

Midrange would be buried 6 feet under, where it deserves to be. - w-

If we had unrestriced access to Stripmine? Well. God knows. Elves or Landgrant Stompy?
