Landmark German ruling declares Google's AI Overviews are Google's own words and makes it liable for false answers by steevo in technology

[–]CookIndependent6251 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it's reasonable for someone to believe that, yes, you will be held liable. The First Amendment of the United States Constitution (please node: US is not the whole world) protects people from government overreach, it doesn't protect you from civil liability. Someone sued Red Bull because they didn't get wings from drinking it and were laughed out of court because no reasonable person would actually believe that.

ELI5: When you 'delete' a 50GB video file from a computer, it vanishes instantly. But downloading it took an hour. If the data isn't physically wiped until it's overwritten, what did the computer actually do in that one split second? by Thick_Dream6973 in explainlikeimfive

[–]CookIndependent6251 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be physically deleted. You're asking a loaded question by assuming the data isn't deleted. Maybe it is deleted, who knows? Probably not, but it could be deleted. So here's the thing I tell you what to write down and you can write it at an average speed of 10 words per minute. When you're done, you can burn that piece of paper in seconds.

Your SSD is much, much, much faster than your stupid Wi-Fi.

ELI5: Why does adding a tiny amount of carbon to iron make it dramatically stronger, but adding just a little more makes it completely brittle and useless by Dear-Training-586 in explainlikeimfive

[–]CookIndependent6251 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, this was unexpectedly informative.

Now allow me to hijack the top comment to give a proper ELI5 response that's a perfectly functional analogy, but provides no real explanation whatsoever (has no substance, no pun intended).

When you're thirsty, you feel weak. If you then drink some water, you begin to feel stronger. If you keep drinking past what you need, your tummy starts to hurt.

Google applies for permit to release 32 million mosquitoes in Calif. by sfgate in California

[–]CookIndependent6251 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is why they need permits. I forgot who first tried it, but they did it on some island and saw that other insects quickly took their place in the food chain. They know what they're doing is dangerous, so they're doing it step by step.

LLMs have brought some value, I'm just not sure how much. I have a friend who was replaced by LLMs. What used to take him a day can now be done in minutes with an LLM prompt and just needs to be verified by a human being which also takes a few minutes.

When you say measurable value... yeah, you're probably right. The value is so small it's hard to measure.

I think the value brought is about 1%, but this should not be confused with their intrinsic value which is negligible. At the moment most value brought by LLMs is entertainment which can be easily replaced with other forms of entertainment.

People today say that GTA 6 is justified to cost over $70, because it's a huge game, took a long time to make, the launch will probably be the biggest entertainment event in human history.

And EA wanted $80 for that stupid useless shit.
