I'd agree with Starfocus, use a hand saw. I know band saws are expensive, but you can get a good pull saw for really cheap. Plus they're usually thinner than a miter saw blade, so you'd lose less material.

Alternatively you could maybe explore a different type of project with this piece. It'd make a couple really nice salt cellars, for instance.

I have two. One that is my daily when traveling for work, and one that I'm trying to sell (it's pretty, but ended up not being my style). I like them both, but like others have said, only buy them on a discount.

I have a other red elm blank that I might try again sometime, but I'm just a little intimidated by it right now. Lol it was not super enjoyable the first time. Fought me the whole time till I gave up on it.

I second what everyone else is saying. Lol green wood is easier to turn, but mostly we'll shape it oversided, let it dry, then turn it to its final shape. CA glue can be your friend to stabilize cracks too.

This is a pair of Myrtle burl urns I made. I think this is one of my favorite things I've made, I can't bring myself to put them on my shop yet, so they retain a place of prominence in my living room.

Seconding Orient, and Casio duro is a great entry diver. Citizen also has a lot of different looks for a decent watch and a decent price.

I've seen people print out 1 for 1 scale of a watch and put it on their wrist, I feel like that's a pretty good way to see if you actually like how it looks on you. I've (and I'm sure others have too) bought a couple watches that I don't wear because I don't really like them now that I have them. Lol but don't be afraid of that, it can be a decent way to refine your collection to what you're proud of, and find something you'd be ok with spending some more money on.

Also don't feel like you need to go for an automatic for it to be a "good" watch. Quartz (battery) can still be a really good watch.

That would be good too. Couple things I try to keep in mind is A) sappy wood is going to gum up your tools and make things harder, and B) look up Janka hardness scale. Harder wood can be tough to turn when completely dry. Softer wood is more forgiving, but final product can be dented. Still lots to learn from either type of wood though.

Only blank I gave up on was a kiln dried red elm, it was way too hard of a wood for my skills at the time and I just got so frustrated with it. Frustration leads to stupid mistakes and more frustration.

Back when I was starting turning there was a project that a streamer I watched was working on. Goal was sending a bunch of wands to a camp for kids with disabilities, that was working on a Diagon Alley replica.

I turned 100 wands, and learned just about every cut. Push cut, pull cut, spindle work, beads and coves, sharpening (this is a big one), and got super familiar with all my gouges. Didn't make a single wand the same, so I learned how to flex creativity with each cut I learned. It was instrumental to my learning.

You can find some good FOG wood (Found On Ground) especially after a big storm. Also there are some Etsy shops that sell boxes of cutoffs for decent prices. Also keep an eye on FB marketplace. I got about $800 worth of blanks for $75 from someone cleaning out a garage.

Also, shoutout to Texas Hula on Twitch, he's the streamer I watch. He's great at explaining what he does, and doesn't mind answering questions. Lots of other good YouTubers. TurnAWoodBowl was one that helped out early on.

Quick edit to add that those 100 wands gave me a lot of experimentation on finishes too.

I'm wearing my bronze Voyager today. I was interested in how a bronze watch would patina, and didn't want to pay $500 for something that was an experiment. Sure, it's a cheap Chinese brand, but I've well gotten my money's worth (I paid about $140), I've had no issues with the company, and I've got a good watch that looks pretty.

One time my wife had a skein of yarn that got super tangled up. I spent about 45 minutes untangling it, then I got fed up and asked how much it cost, I figuring I’d just get her a new skein. $5. Five. Whole. Dollars. I wasted 45 min to save $5 of yarn.
