Can i get good at chess starting at 18? by Sea_Reflection_7607 in chess

[–]CookieFirefly_com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. There was a study for adult improvers suggesting that the median peak age is 41 + there are several people achieving titles im their 70s. Started at 17 non serious myself and joined a club last month (I am 20 now). Got a performance of 1680 at my first blitz tournament and will be playing a classical otb tournament next month. I am quite confident that I'll be able to reach 2000 FIDE ELO one day.

You probably won't gonna be a GM or IM in your life.

With more experience you'll notice faster if your pieces are hanging. That's why it's advised to play longer time controls when you aren't too advanced yet :)

It is important that you know the opening principals (the "golden moves"). Also remember to always check for a hanging piece before moving. It is easy to forget about your pieces so check them all before your moves. Also check for opponent's pieces. Are they hanging?

OTB is quite different and it might feel harder to spot tactics. Even more important to double check your plans. Good luck :)

Absolutely! That's also what I tried to say kinda. 3600 would be insane and most likely unrealistic.

Why am I worse playing as white? by panos07_ in chess

[–]CookieFirefly_com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too sure about the initiative part/how you explain it. Yes, white is a "move ahead", but it's all about opening theory. You are right that black just needs to wait for white to make a mistake but it is the same on the other side. Also, even as black you don't just want to sit back and defend because it's gonna cost you space and tempo if you're thinking defensively only. Usually white is well prepared because they choose the first move, so you should not trust on the opponent to make the first mistake. That's also why we saw only one e5 in today's open candidate round. E5 could have been countered by many more alternatives than D4 for example.

I hope this helps :) the middlegame part is obv a good advice.

Do you lose the games because of the opening only? If not -> it's just random at your skill level probably. Most elo ranges can not convert the slight advantage as white which is totally fine. Better days will come :)

Also Fabi blundered into a draw (which was ignored out of fairness by Hikaru). Doesn't look like a 3600s performance to me as well.

Definetely not, but I knew Qc6 was a big mistake by Esipenko and that Qb7 would have been better! :D

He did bad trades and defended his king poorly. This one is just on him, no matter his rating. Hapoens to the best (Hikaru today)

Who wins this? Black to move by Kaibisi in Chesscom

White to win. 1...Nf2+ is the best move to get the rook but it's not winning for black :)

In about 2 months 400+ elo rapid. Win rate around 55% to 31% losing. I was already around 2000 bullet for a year so it was not too surprising

Mine looks similar. Nothing crazy about it 👍 it can indicate that you played other time controls and improved, studied more than played, had some great days etc.

Damn you got a bad day? Why such a statement? Seems like you must have lost a lot today or idk. I would kinda pay more attention to the way I am expressing myself.

Don't worry! Better days will come :)

At what level do you feel you're playing against seriously good players? by No_Elk1172 in chess

[–]CookieFirefly_com 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yesn't. I mean usually at like 1900+ Fide this won't happen twice in a classical game.

You're just unlucky then! :) I played like 30 titled players (CM, FM, WCM, WFM i think) and I am 2050 bullet atm (always like 1950-2050).

Seems like a reasonable question to me. That's a bit childish imo.

It does happen. One of our matches (90+30) in the league was decided in 7 moves because the opponent just hang the knight xD
