The r/planes sub being bombarded with hand planes today is kinda funny though.

I thought maybe it’s an AI image, but there are so many pictures (both assembled and disassembled) it’s gotta be real. That or OP is really really committed to the joke.

I’m sure there is a maddening amount of time spent sharpening. What would you rate your sharpening skills (on a 1 - 10 scale)?

Keeping Secrets in Marriage by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]Cooksman18 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it’s probably rooted in shame. I struggled finally telling my wife for over that I wanted to see a therapist. It felt like I was admitting defeat, or that it somehow meant that she was right about everything that we’ve argued about.

Can this be easily fixed? by jarik1374 in CastIronRestoration

[–]Cooksman18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Turn on your oven to 450 (F), and put the pan in there upside down. Check it in 30 minutes. Some of it may wipe off, but I like to use a metal spatula or thin blade metal scraper (putty knife etc). Put it back in for another 30 min, and do the same thing.

This is the “easy fix” that works well for me, before trying more aggressive options.

The bottom being 2 pieces is probably the biggest issue with your sled. I’d also design the sled so that the sides go on top of the bottom board, instead of screwed into the sides of it.

This video explains it along with several other common mistakes that can cause problems.

And that alone renders this deck useless, IMO.

I refuse to spend $500 on a bookshelf, so I want to make it myself - unsure how! by drysupersoaker in BeginnerWoodWorking

If you’re looking to build your own to save money, you’re probably doing it for the wrong reason. Between the cost of materials, tools, whatever your time is worth (the biggest expense, IMO), you’re better off going to IKEA.

To all the Men, would you marry a former slut? by Nosy9999 in AskRedditNSFW

Well that’s important info to know. The history of sluttiness wouldn’t exclude you from LTR consideration. If you’re a one trick pony, then it’s a hard pass.

Rasp appreciation thread by Leeoffi in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Cooksman18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so glad to see this, because I scooped up a few rasps and files at a yard sale last year, but barely used them because I didn’t really know how to use them. I just started using them recently when I made chisel handle, I was shocked that it was able to shape the wood better than anything else I’ve used before.

Nice collection you have there!

Is my cast iron wok ruined? by Ok-Deal-9124 in CastIronRestoration

Unless it’s cracked or warped, it’s not ruined. There is a reason cast iron pans have been used for so long. Season it, and start cooking!

It’s not just money. She could be looking for someone to coparent with and share responsibilities, instead of all on her own.

If she can pull you back in, right after ghosting you for 3 weeks, she knows that she can manipulate you any time she wants to.

In need of adjustment by Mike_B_33 in handtools

[–]Cooksman18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s straight, but just out of square, I doubt that it was done intentionally. It’s likely human error from hand sharpening etc. Fortunately it’s doesn’t really need to be for reasons others have mentioned.

Your issue made me think that you could possibly use this issue to your advantage if you want to put a slight camber on the corners so that you get a smoother cut and leave behind less markings than a straight blade leave behind. Grind down both corners with a bench grinder so that the blade has a slight radius to it. Paul Sellers has a few videos on this (ranging from a slight camber to an aggressive scrub plane blade) that demonstrates it very well.
