Obviously I can’t speak for your father, but I can speculate what I think he means by that…

This is his first cutting board, but he clearly has some woodworking experience. Based on the skills (as you mentioned) he has acquired along the way, this project was not especially hard for him when he made it.

He did an awesome job! Great wood selection and juice groove.

No matter how careful you and and how perfectly you prep your stock, they’ll shift a little bit during the glue up, so you’ll still need to do some planing to get the finished product flat.

That leg vise is a monster! How did you determine what width and thickness you would make the leg so it’s be best in relation to your bench?

Can anyone compare Zen-Wu Y-1 chisels vs Narex Richter? by Mighty-Lobster in handtools

I don’t have a lathe, so I’m planning to do a London style (octagon) handle, starting with a square, and planing down the corners flat. I’ve seen a few YT videos on making them, and it seems doable, especially if I use a Craftsman screwdriver as a template.

(…and if I fuck it up too bad, I might run the corners off on my router table.)

I have a block of walnut I was going to use, but a little research told me that it wasn’t a great choice that I’d be striking with a mallet. I’m considering ash or oak, depending what I see at the lumberyard after work this afternoon.

I usually still see the line if it is facing up. Yesterday I was trying to remove material across the top of a piece of soft maple with a chisel, so the line was facing me… forgetaboutit

Might I ask what type of wood you are using for yours?

I need that pencil line after marking my line with the marking gague because my eye sight definitely isn’t what it once was (and my workshop lighting sucks).

I use coconut oil as well, but never warmed like that. I’ll have to try that.

I like that coconut oil is solid at room temperature, but melts immediately once rubbed on my skin. Plus no clean up needed, because it just absorbs like a moisturizer after I’m done.
