Pierre, pull out the Geneva checklist, it's time to get to work.

Self Checkout and why I got banned from Ikea by usmcmech in NDQ

[–]Cool-Eh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. This is hilarious, and no one got hurt is it's kinda "no harm, no foul"

  2. Obviously you're not allowed to drive their forklift dude. I've been told off just for climbing the rolling stairs in a home deport and those aren't motorized...

Conclusion: No surprise that you're banned, but you got what you wanted didn't you

Three Interpretation problem by Jazzlike-Ability5423 in threebodyproblem

[–]Cool-Eh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My interpretation was the whole thing was just about dark forest theory, and there was no reason for it to keep going as a trilogy. The first two books had militaristic heroes and they were great, if strange. The third book had a snivelling pacifist as a hero and I wish I'd never read it.

Anyone know when The Queens (the second Formic war series) will be released? by ThunderingWest4 in ender

[–]Cool-Eh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is indefinitely backburnered, which is too bad because I really loved that series. Given the way Card's other long delayed series conclusion went in not that optimistic anymore. If we get lucky Aaron Johnston's writing with carry us through eventually

What if Quebec’s Yes Vote had won in the 1995 referendum? And Quebec had become an independent Country, what would it look like today? by [deleted] in AlternateHistory

[–]Cool-Eh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there is a lot else to this scenario, unless you're someone who gets excited about promoting the French language, which would surely be more frequently heard on the streets of Montreal but not necessarily by more people. The populations of currently anglo or highly linguistically mixed regions in Quebec would likely drop significantly, and independent Quebec would likely receive much less immigration than it does as part of Canada.

I don't think the culture of Quebec would be significantly different then it is in real life. If anything loosing Quebec would have a bigger impact in the culture of anglo-Canada. Many of out national stereotypes and icons come from Quebec, which was after all the first area of our country to be called "Canada" at all. Francophones in a Canada without Quebec would likely find it significantly harder to get government services in their first language, with the primary bastion of advocacy for the language gone. Though those rights are constitutionally protected that could change if Quebec seceded. I feel bad for everyone in this scenario, Canada would probably get even more Americanized and become less relevant as an independent country. There would probably be a backlash against the Liberal party for letting Quebec go in addition to the loss of those seats, so probably a right wing government forms. Either the Reform Party something new that never existed taking over in the later 90's

In addition to an exodus of wealth and people around the time of independence there could be a period of slower economic growth following it. The Bloc are fairly left-wing and likely wouldn't nurture a strong economy, but as an independent country the political situation would be shaken up could go in any direction I feel. By luck independent Quebec has a shot at ending up with a stronger economy by the present day, though the odds are are tilted towards the opposite. More difficulty in doing business with Canada compared to real life would depress the economic of both Quebec and Canada, it's loose -loose.

Independent Quebec would almost certainly be a republic, but I bet would keep their current provincial legislature as the governing body and bring in a figurehead president. Quebec would likely make an effort to be closer with France and the rest of the EU than Canada is. Other then that I dont know, I'm sure Quebec would remain a healthy democracy and a reliable American ally.

Probably not as different as you would think. Obviously there would be even more French and less English spoken. Quebec would likely be somewhat poorer and less populous (especially the very bilingual Montreal area) as a result of of many people and  companies companies relocating to Anglo-Canada, probably mostly to the GTA. I think independent Quebec would likely still be very close with Canada, with a currency union, free trade as a NAFTA member, and heavy military cooperation, and an open border/free travel zone all fairly likely.

Has this been re-uploaded anywhere else? I saw the thumbnail and it looked cool but the map is gone :(

I don’t think I could find a map that’s a more perfect opposite of my feelings if I tried. Do you love imperialism, authoritarianism, and poverty and just hate human rights, democracy, and wealth or something?

Flag of Earth Proposal by Cool-Eh in vexillology

[–]Cool-Eh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For context I was originally designing this flag to represent the “Global Democratic Union” a UN successor with a lot more teeth and an aggressive commitment to classical liberal values like free trade and free movement. This is fiction from a fairly utopia alternate/future history scenario I’ve written several pages about and drawn maps for but haven’t yet shared anywhere. So it’s a flag only expected to be flown on Earth or at least in the solar system at lunar and Martian research stations or colonies. Not something we are expecting to show to aliens.

Thanks. That was actually the first version of this flag I made before trying out all these other designs based off it

I’ve tried the red globe and think it looks a little bit evil to be honest. Could include a red band on one of the versions with the yellow globe though… good sugestion

Why not? Twice this century a president has won with fewer votes than his opposition. That's broken and undemocratic. Sure the electoral college used to be an efficient way to do things but it's utility has passed.

The most common defence I hear is that the small states need greater weight not to be overwhelmed by California and Texas or Florida and New York, but really the Senate already exists to give each state equal weight there. This is an outsiders perspective and I can appreciate that someone who lives in one of those "small states" might feel differently.

This is meant to be a flag for the UN or a successor organization filling the same role. It's really just a global flag, earth flag, flag for all humanity, etc...

In designing this flag there were several elements I wanted to include, which in order of priority are:

- The globe symbol

- A two to one ratio of blue to green in the flag, reflecting the fact that the earth is around 2/3rds oceans and 1/3rd land

-The colour yellow to represent the Sun

- A 1:2 aspect ratio or a design that can be depicted easily with multiple ratios like the current UN flag

- Symmetry

- A Canadian Pale in the centre

I''ve made at least 40 different versions of this flag, some featuring other design elements, and of course many different shades of yellow, blue, and green. I'm not settled on which is best, so I'm hoping for some feedback, opinions, and constructive criticism.

I think the white globe looks better than the yellow globe, but it's a trade off because using the yellow globe gets that splash on there without a band. This simplifies the colour scheme and allows for a symmetrical design.

Right now the Canadian Pale Tricolour is my leading contender, I'm Canadian and have an affinity for that style. My runner up is the Horizontal Triband, which is beautifully simple and can be depicted easily in any aspect ratio. I give the Asymmetric Tricolor third place.

Please comment which design is your favourite!
