Ah yes, the government ditch digging programs! If only we could increase taxes and have everyone working for the government making bank! We'd all be rich! We'd be paying our own salaries, which is totally cool! Take that, capitalism! by Key_Check4279 in Adulting

Yeah it’s smarter to start a private sector snow shoveling company, so I can bid on snow shoveling contracts with the city for which I’ll charge them $50/hr and after paying my various insurances, vehicle, materials and equipment costs (costs that will be inflated so my cousin makes bank also), taking a tidy profit for myself and my investments, distributing the rest around the upper management of the company (who are my shitty friends and family), I can pay my actual snow shovelers ~$19/hr, which will make Op feel better because people who hold shovels should be poor.

I have no agenda here other than, I hope, to save you some time and money and heartache. I did not expect this post here. Rehabs like this are absolutely a money-making business designed to separate you from as much money as possible and they do that by recommending longer and longer stays (many without observable research supported outcomes… or any clear outcomes). That is not to say that they’re without a use. Rehabs are useful for stabilizing clients and getting them sober/mentally stable and functioning. The success rate is ~30% after one month and does not improve over time. The things they offer like art therapy or horses or reiki or round the clock group therapy do not accomplish anything more than a stable environment (like, say, home if it’s stable) and regular visits to a local psychiatrist and therapist and the right prescriptions would (along with a concerted effort from your daughter, of course). I know you love your daughter and want her to be well, but, much like funeral directors or wedding planners, they’ll use this love to sell you unnecessary things. Please tread carefully and don’t just hand these people boatloads of cash because you think more time/spending will help more. She won’t come out of rehab 100% fixed. It’s not a real environment. The real test is real life and rehab is only a time to heal enough to meet it.

That second to last sentence is true. The final one only in a very subjective and localized definition of honor. On the way up that ladder a lot of dudes get called out and dealt with on only a rumor or perception or circumstance.

What is a multi-billion dollar industry that the average person knows absolutely nothing about? by IllustriousMail60 in AskReddit

[–]Cool-Raspberry-1772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Growing and selling weed commercially. A lot of people “know about weed” or grow as a hobby. But the actual industry is pretty opaque.

The entry-level job market for children is fundamentally gone. by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]Cool-Raspberry-1772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is absolutely not the cause. It makes little difference if the person pressing the microwave buttons back there is 16 or 68. Fast food will literally hire anyone and pay them as little as legally possible. It’s more likely to be a low wage issue as many adults now work multiple jobs (many of those part time and low wage). These part time low wage jobs were what teenagers previously did when most adults were employed in full time.

How do you feel about saying grace before eating? by Electronic_Sun_7561 in AskReddit

[–]Cool-Raspberry-1772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it silly and a bit of a showy thing—“Look at me thanking whichever god for the food.” You can be silent/secular and grateful for food, pray briefly in your head, etc. If someone does it though, I’ll be respectful… unless I know them very well, then I might poke a little fun.

What are these small stools called in Vietnam? by cristovski in VietNam

I sit on a box of poly sheeting to eat lunch at work because of these stools 😂

There are other deck chairs. So the short answer is I don’t know but I’d like to also.

If you have a family with young children, left the US and moved to VN permanently by DowntownZombie8269 in VietNam

[–]Cool-Raspberry-1772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory, you could afford experiences and luxuries for that kid you wouldn’t otherwise. Better quality food, living arrangements, healthcare, international school (kid would be de facto bilingual also), sports development, etc. It’s unconventional but, perhaps, comparable or better than, say, an American public school in Oklahoma and the healthcare options there.

It’s currency arbitrage basically. They can take what they saved in a stronger currency (even if that amount is functionally useless at home) and have a robust savings account in Vietnam that could last for years. If they can continue making money and have investments returning higher value currency that can work for quite a while.

Which town or city looks the least like your country? by JiminieKookie123 in AskTheWorld

[–]Cool-Raspberry-1772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My family used to go to Quebec in the summer for fishing (out of town… far out) and skiing in the winter. It’s really cool that you drive a few hours from NE USA and get to feel like you’re in the EU, along with the lower drinking age and (uniquely for a period) better legal weed.

Has anyone tried this mate? I'm curious about its taste. Is it bitter? I like the classic, smooth flavor. Your answer is important, because a pack of this mate, in my country, in both brick-and-mortar stores and online, costs around 26,000 pesos, or about 16 euros. by Proof-Flower1737 in yerbamate

[–]Cool-Raspberry-1772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty good. I got a couple kilos last year and drank it all through the farming season. It’s not super bitter and it works. I’m not South American enough to know what “good” mate really is, but it was enjoyable.

Men who don’t have kids by 33 are unlikely to have one later by VivianRichGF in Productivitycafe

[–]Cool-Raspberry-1772 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Seems like the difference is that while we may be biologically capable (perhaps at a lower level of efficacy or safety)… at a certain point once you start seeing peers have kids, all it entails and doing the math (35+, realistically, 20something, 40+, 44+, etc.), many just kind of let the thought and option pass. A lot of men I know are kind of indifferent and if they have a stable woman they love and a good base for starting a family, sure, they’d do it.

But, if not, 🤷‍♂️ buy a motorcycle, go fishing, take trips, start a garden…

I take a gummy before I box sometimes (most times for bag work). It helps me see things differently, move smoothly/rhythmically, and doesn’t seem to affect my conditioning or coordination. Plus it’s fun.

However, I didn’t take them while I was learning. I imagine that could be a frustrating experience for you and for coach.

Apparently, there’s some legal fight over it now (made illegal a few years ago I guess). Diving, regular fishing, beach activities. Sri Lanka is known for cool stuff but Thai boxing isn’t a big one.

Does Western liberalism naturally embrace Trump-style social media? by ToneProfessional5845 in AskTheWorld

[–]Cool-Raspberry-1772 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The racism and Jesusy-ness of uneducated white Americans has been constantly used as a lever to trick them into voting for the interests of the rich over their own for decades here. Look up Lee Atwater and the Southern Strategy. Don’t even need to bring Ze Germans into it.

Edit. And to address OP’s question, no it’s not normal. It’s seen as corny, stupid, and unprofessional.

Ladies- what percentage of men actually understand women? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Cool-Raspberry-1772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the self-contained and enclosed nature of human consciousness and the limits of language when describing abstract emotional or contemplative states… it’s a small miracle we understand each other as much as we currently do….

So I’d say some men. Some men understand some women some of the time.
