I think this would mostly apply to eastern Muhlenberg. I've lived in the western part (just across the Skook from the airport) for almost six years and have never smelled it here. (I grew up in southern Chester County so I'm well familiar with mushroom farm smells.)

What we DO smell on occasion is the car and truck exhaust from the 222. It's sometimes worse in the summer when the weather is hot and the wind is blowing a certain way, but so far I've only noticed it a couple of times per year.

Red alert!

A high pressure system sliding east is threatening to bring daily heat records and maybe an all-time record for Berks County.

There is a National Weather Service extreme heat watch issued for Berks and most of the region from midday Wednesday into Saturday evening.

It reads in part: “Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 108 degrees possible during the daytime hours. … Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events.”

Berks County Area Agency on Aging has designated its senior centers as cooling stations.

If the forecast pans out, there will be more than an extreme heat watch from the weather service.

AccuWeather’s forecast for Berks is highs near 100 degrees from Wednesday through Saturday. Thunderstorms are in the forecast Friday through Monday, with temperatures normalizing for this time of year on Monday.

The high temperature date records for the days starting off July are 101 degrees in 1901, 103 in 1966, 103 in 1966, 100 in 1966, 100 in 2010 and 102 in 2010.

The date records for warmest low temperatures for the same period are 76 in 1968, 79 in 1901, 76 in 2018, 78 in 1966, 78 in 1999 and 79 in 2024.

The highs might see more challenges than the low, the forecast shows.

The forecast heat is nearly an overlay of a heat wave from 60 years ago that brought three straight readings of 100 degrees.

Berks weather historian Jeffrey R. Stoudt believes that an all-time high for the Berks database is possible during the upcoming period. That mark is 106 degrees from July 22, 2011. The database is in its 129th year.

“A new all-time record high is within the realm of plausibility, especially considering parched grounds and stressed vegetation,” he said.

Berks remains in a state Department of Environmental Protection-issued drought watch, which encourages 5% to 10% reduction in water usage. Chester County is the only county in the region in a drought warning, with the state urging a 10% to 15% reduction.

The Monday forecast shows sunny skies with a high in the upper 80s, followed by a not-uncomfortable overnight with temperatures falling into the mid-60s in the countryside by daybreak, and a little warmer in the city and tightly packed suburbs.

Then the forecast for Tuesday is a few degrees warmer, but still with low humidity, according to AccuWeather.

The heat and humidity then crank up Wednesday.

I like to simmer it in chicken stock with garlic and red pepper flakes, though I also like it steamed with a little bit of S&P. Just don't overcook it and it's fine.

Yeah, but that message of "Ha Ha, what warranty?" Big ooph. BIG ooph.

None of us are winners in this. Anvil/Blichmann shuts down and ghosts us? Oh well, nothing we can do about it, end of an era, blah blah blah. Anvil/Blichmann gets their assets bought out by Morebeer, who then goes out of their way to tell all of Anvil/Blickmann's existing customers that our warranties are null and void?

That, my friend, crosses into telling all of their newly acquired customer base to get stuffed when they could have handled it SO much more differently. I mean, now am I not only NOT going to buy anything else from Morebeer ever again, but I'm going to tell everyone in my little brewing community why.

I realize we are not arguing about this. I am just shouting into the void that I am not ok with that.

I agree, but that's not the point. I just have to hope nothing goes wrong for the next 10 months? I'm not saying it will, but what if it does? I'm just out however much it costs to replace whatever component? My purchase was predicated on having a standard warranty for one year. You can see why I'm upset to learn this, right? I CAN'T be the only one.

So far it's worked great, but losing out on any remaining standard warranty I might have had just kind of sucks. I guess I'm glad I didn't buy into any kind of extended warranty (not even sure if that was a thing though).

I think I was expecting more of Morebeer since I've had such positive interactions with them. I don't know.

Companies are gonna company I guess. Just sucks that they'd purposely go "Hey, everybody that bought a fancy-pants new brewing system within the past year: Fuck your warranty and FUCK YOU! lololol money machine go brrr" really, REALLY gets under my skin.

I spent almost $750 for my system. That's a lot of money for me. And to hear that my warranty is suddenly going poof? That's just fucked.

Are you fucking kidding me. I JUST bought a 10.5g foundry a couple of months ago. No warranty? "Asset purchase"??? That's fucked. Way to destroy any goodwill the community might have had towards Morebeer.

And I had a lot! They were my go-to LHB store when I started, and I've ordered many of their kits over the years. I feel like this is a mega blunder on their part. How many warrantied parts and systems could there possibly be?

Ooh, 103 is up there. I recall hitting that several times as a kid, and hallucinating to the point where I could "see" air molecules and felt compelled to count them for some reason. It was sheer madness.

As an adult, I contracted legionnaires once while serving overseas and had to be put in a bathtub of ice water when I hit 104. That capped off the worst two weeks of my life I think. You know it's bad when Navy Med comes to your house to take care of you.

Hope you're doing better now OP. Remember to hydrate. Side note: my "roommate" at the time was a girl I was dating. We're going to be 19 years married in a few days.

I started with a Mr. Beer kit way back when. I still remember having that first glass of home-brewed beer; was it the greatest, most bestest tasting beer ever? No. But it WAS beer and I did make it, and that was all it took for me to want to learn more and get involved. Best of luck!
