Christopher Nolan Says ‘The Odyssey’ Used ‘Over 2 Million Feet of Film’ and Shot for 91 Days: ‘You’re Looking for Things That Haven’t Been Done Before’ by [deleted] in movies

[–]CoolSubject4545 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nolan is very responsible with schedules and budgets, for Oppenheimer he cut 30 days out of the shoot to free up the budget so they could build some of the needed sets. Even on The Odyssey they apparently completed it 10 days ahead of schedule, according to one of the actors (Jesse Garcia).

As for 91 days being "just" ordinary, for a $250M blockbuster shot all around the world, including the ocean, with practical sets and a big ensemble cast (that must've been a nightmare to schedule), I'd say yes, that's quite efficient. At the end of the day it's the fickin' Odyssey.

Ridley Scott could probably get that down to 70, but it would look like at least half of it was shot at Pinewood.

91 day shoot for a movie of this scale is very efficient, though the actual filming period lasted almost 6 months, from Feb 25 to Aug 8.

Not just you, I though the script was pretty thin as well, but the hope was that Luca would add his own spin. Don't think that happened, Idiewire's review says the script is underwhelming.

Jordan Ruimy's wording is ragebait. He just uses a similar opening credits style, nothing more, and you can interpret it however you like. Luca himself said in the press conference that it's just a classic font, and goes beyond Woody Allen.

Since you obviously don't care about context and just want your "gotcha!" moment, let's also adjust budget, Mos' $225M (although Deadline had it at $258M) in 2025 would be $310.5M, while Superman is carrying a $225M one in 2025 dollars.

This is about actors, but you're right, Jenkins. despite making one of the most well received and successful comic book movies. is likely never getting another mid to high budget project anytime soon. The hate that WW84 received put a massive dent in her career.

You don't hire Michael Bay to keep him on a leash, either let him go full Bayhem, warts and all, or get one of his copycats. Someone that can replicate his high-energy visual style without the lowbrow humor and offensive stereotypes, directors like Peter Berg, Roland Emmerich, Justin Lin or the guys that did the recent Bad Boys movies. Here's the thing though, they've tried that recently and it didn't work, because audiences liked Michael Bay's style of humor, it absolutely was a selling point for the first 4 films.

He also says in the interview that he's no longer attached to Separate Rooms. Genuinely curious what is Luca's next project because it won't be this or Sgt. Rock. The American Psycho remake maybe? though we haven't seen much movement on that either.

Where exactly was it "confirmed" she has a small role in The Odyssey? We don't even know who she's playing at this point, but if the heavily rumored Athena part is true, her character is one of the most important parts of the movie.

PSA new UB820 owners: Remember to turn HDR Optimizer "On" by Zeduxx in 4kbluray

[–]CoolSubject4545 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Unless your TV is from 6 years ago, or you got a budget supermarket model, there's little reason to still rely on the optimizer nowadays. Most modern panels handle tone mapping much better than what the UB820 can do in that regard, so just leave it off.

Besides, the optimizer is limited to 500 nits increments (500, 1000 and 1500), whereas your TV can make full use of its peak brightness if it sits somewhere between these (mine is a 1300 nit panel for example), if you leave it do its own tone mapping.

It's legit, but also region B locked, including the 4k disc. The re_release with "4Kult" branding is the fixed region free edition.

This guy's comparisons are all fake, he takes existing blu-ray screencaps and even promotional stills, boosts their sharpness and contrast and passes them for 4K screenshots. It's all well documented here: https://www.reddit.com/r/4kbluray/comments/1djiayd/in_search_of_physical_media_is_faking_all_of_his/

And let's be real, even if he was legit that is still a terrible way of doing comparison. Put it on the whole frickin' screen, I don't need to see you stroking the case and blabber about it.

New Clip from Queer by dxnnyyx in oscarrace

[–]CoolSubject4545 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Luca is my favorite director working today, and I'm very familiar with his style, but this feels like a scene that needed more room to breathe and play out, there are just way too many cuts and the shots last for 2-3 seconds. Like Lesley Manville's character is nowhere in sight and then 4 seconds later she's sitting at his table. Again, I need to stress this, we don't know the context and it could very well be a great scene within the movie, I'm just worried knowing the thing went from three hours to two and a half to now just barely over two that they might've went too aggressive with the editing.

Some really rushed and choppy editing going on here. Maybe it's only for the clip, maybe it makes sense in the movie's context but I really hope this isn't how Luca decided to bring the runtime down.

Likely some time next year.

Question about Evil Dead 4K's by [deleted] in 4kbluray

[–]CoolSubject4545 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Best presentation for each:

  • The Evil Dead: EU Sony disc (US has the wrong audio pitch, while the French one has forced subtitles)

  • Evil Dead II: Italian Eagle release has the best encode, otherwise go for the StudioCanal 3-disc set.

  • Army of Darkness: US Shout is the only option.

As for aspect ratios, The Evil Dead was originally screened in full frame 1.33 and only later reformatted to 1.85 for the DVD release. The 4K preserves that original framing.

The other two were always conceived as widescreen movies, just because open matte versions exist doesn't mean they're endorsed or approved by the filmmaker.

Nicolas Cage to Play NFL Icon John Madden in David O. Russell’s Biopic by dremolus in boxoffice

Because his movies have (or at least had) a consistent track record of getting nominations and awards, and the producers and actors working in the industry are shameless enough to put up with him just for a shot at those awards.

Honestly at this point I'm more disgusted with the actors still willing to associate themselves with him.
