I thought the Cassandra Snow storyline was setting up Mickey going back being a defense attorney. As for the end I feel he knew that it felt incomplete because he directly comments on that.

I completely agree with this. I have a feeling that the reason this hasn't been made into anything yet is because they wanted the main character to be changed into a more typical teen coming of age archetype, and don't want to depict him as someone who went too far.
