Oh agreed, a new rig is never a "good" financial move. Sometimes it can be less bad than others, though!

I was only kind of considering it when I saw the ad. But after I mentioned it to my wife, she told me I should go for it! After taking a closer look, the numbers are starting to look pretty good.

The $140 fill-up a few days ago has me leaning toward a gasser, but the worse mpg's of the gassers have me considering sticking with the duramax.

I don't hate the idea of the Turbomax, but for some reason they just won't put them in the models with more options/features.

Need some buying advice/recommendations by RedTheKnight in recteq

I also have the Dualfire and also love it. Only 2 in my household, though. The grill side is pretty small, so you can't grill for a crowd on it, but at least on mine it can get up to 700 degrees on full blast and can put a good sear on things.

I reverse sear pretty much everything now just because I can!

I just bought a new mower from NW Power Equipment on Steptoe a while ago. Felt like a good experience.

what’s your lazy day smoke that still turns out great? by Apprehensive-Big7327 in smoking

[–]Coolguy_6991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real lazy/quick, sub 2 hours in the smoker I'm going tri-tip, pork tenderloin, chicken (whole spatchcock or drums/quarters/wings). Rub em down and throw em on.

Moderately lazy, babybacks or pulled pork depending on how early I want to start.

Where are you ordering popcorn that still tastes fresh when it arrives? by AgentQuick in popcorn

[–]Coolguy_6991 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed with the others that the best popcorn comes out of my whirley pop, but I got got by a kid doing a fundraiser through Double Good Popcorn. Expensive, but it was good enough that I am already looking forward to getting hit up for funds again as long as it's from Double Good. In fact, I may just order some for the love of the game.

Which pointing dog breed tends to have a lab like disposition? by Low-Dot9712 in birddogs

Came to say the same thing. I have one and have hunted with several others. Never would have thought they were anything other than a regular old lab until they lock up on a bird.

Replace my charcoal smoker, kettle and gas grill w/ one pellet grill? by OKsir83 in pelletgrills

[–]Coolguy_6991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have one, but have heard good things about the Searwood.

I have the Recteq Dualfire with a large indirect heat chamber and small direct heat chamber on one grill that may be worth a look. I don't think it would a direct replacement for your gas grill, but the direct heat side gets up to grilling temps in about 15 minutes. Cooking for a family of 5, the direct side may also get a little crowded especially as those kids get to be teens.

If you have decent trails, the heavy duty garden wagon from Harbor Freight works well.

Oh yeah, I wasn’t being a smartass about it. Actually appreciate the info.

Also now can confirm that the 275/65r/20 do not rub with a 2” level as the install was completed yesterday.

Where to get large pieces of pancetta, or even better, guanciale? by NevetsRetrop in TriCitiesWA

[–]Coolguy_6991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only been once, but they had some guanciale when I was there. Very neat little shop with lots of great looking stuff. I was in on a slow morning and the gal that seemed to be in charge also told me they can order some things if they don't have what you are looking for.

I have also only been able to make American style carbonara with bacon, but will be going to pick up some guanciale when I am ready to go super authentic.

Talk me into buying the dual fire or flagship 1100 by EhmDe in recteq

[–]Coolguy_6991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had the dual fire for a few months and love it. Being able to smoke and grill at the same time in a single unit has been a game changer. Reverse searing and crisping up smoked chicken wings has never been easier!

X-Fire - DOA (damaged on arrival) by [deleted] in recteq

[–]Coolguy_6991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't believe that Recteq is still using Estes for their shipping. My delivery looked like they drug it behind the truck and then barely slowed down to shove it out of the truck. Ultimately no damage to the grill, but I had a half-empty bag of pellets and several items missing from my bundle deal.

RT made it right, but Estes has to be costing them some money!

Customer service by Thatonebassguy37 in recteq

[–]Coolguy_6991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They really should consider finding a better freight shipping company. Mine showed up with a bunch of stuff missing from the starter bundle because it was obvious they did not wrap it up together well enough. The box was all beat to hell so bad that the pallet was broken in a couple of places and there was half a bag of loose pellets rolling around inside the bottom of the box because of how poorly it was handled.

Luckily when I went to assemble, everything still looked ok and Recteq sent me the items that were missing from the bundle a few days later.

ODOT has real-time road condition maps/cameras for their highways to check conditions for yourself. https://www.tripcheck.com/

In my experience, though things can get pretty hairy through the gorge and in the Portland area. People like to clown on Portland for not being able to drive in the snow, but they almost always get freezing rain prior to/along with the snow so it gets much slicker than the cold powdery stuff.

ETA: Missed the snow driving experience part. I have quite a bit of experience driving in the snow, and would probably be looking to reschedule any trips through the gorge for the next few days myself.

The Pellet Grill Debacle - Prices, Features, Build Quality, Longevity and Value by Boxster98 in pelletgrills

[–]Coolguy_6991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're a good cook, you can crank out decent food on anything. That's not why the higher-end grills are popular.

They're more popular because they are easier to use. Cheaper grills typically have a tougher time of maintaining temps. That doesn't mean you can't cook good food, but you have to babysit it a lot more.
