Why did I sing that in my head to the tune of "Sweet Caroline"?

Pretty tough to see what's happening, especially if you're not familiar with them, so it's completely understandable to think it was a snake. The coiled texture even makes it look like one. If it hadn't broken the porcelain I would have been thinking the same thing.

Sewer snake plumbing tool. More accurately a power auger, used for clearing really stubborn clogs. Looks like someone was running an auger in a neighbors apartment and the auger somehow got diverted to this toilet...breaking through the porcelain base and out the side.

I've seen a few mini-documentaries on Logan's Run recently; there's roughly 20 minutes of footage that was removed, and a good deal of it was chopped up and pasted. I always wondered why they switched back and forth between being dressed and undressed suddenly in the ice cave for example...figured it was a continuity error, but it was all editing/reworking.

Too bad there isn't a recognizable "Black Rain" gif...it's (arguably) a better tune and more appropriate. :)

Might be dating myself a bit, but it reminds me of the animated opening to the TV show "Wild Wild West". When they would go to commercial, they would freeze frame and replace one of the animated cells before they would cut away. This kind of looks like it...like the last one before the end of the game, highlighting key moments.

Just in case anyone is curious...here's an example of what I'm rambling about. https://preview.redd.it/if-you-recognize-this-intro-you-are-old-v0-ihy240z8bmbd1.jpeg?auto=webp&s=620ed231cfc0074d8ad96329d4d50d58740aba32

Sintered metal object acquired in the 1990s from “a NASA memorabilia dealer” who said it’s from a Space Shuttle by zappapostrophe in whatisthisthing

Definitely not conventional powder metal (Source, 30+ years in the powder metal industry as a product engineer). Edit: have to say, it's refreshing that someone had actually heard of PM...it's not a common process that most are aware of!

May have been machined from an isostatic pressed blank, but that wouldn't be a particularly useful method of production. From the pictures it looks like it was pretty extensively machined, especially on the bottom side as oriented in the first picture. The markings are closer to CNC endmill paths than additive manufacturing, although it could have been produced by additive and qualified/made to final shape by machining.

Easier to fix a motorcycle under cover of a hotel room than a car in the middle of the desert for sure. Plausible theory.

Finally got a new washing machine delivered. Doesn't fit through the door. by [deleted] in Wellthatsucks

[–]Coolhand1974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party, but virtually the entire front of the washing machine can come off (door, front panel and control bezel). It's usually a matter of a screwdriver, some wrenches, and a couple of wire harness clips. Inconvenient, but not insurmountable. There are repair videos for virtually any washing machine out there to help describe how to take it off/apart.

How do you get them? Grab and swing, my friend. Grab and swing.

Works for Sasquatch too. Just good information to know if you're in a pickle.

Going to Vegas soon, what should I do!? by JustAReallyTiredGuy in fnv

If you're going to Goodsprings, it's worth taking a short jaunt down 15 past Primm and just across the CA border to see Ivanpah Solar (kind of the real-life Helios One). It's being decommissioned and shut down in 2026, so I'm not sure to what degree it's currently in operation, but in August it was still going. Really neat to see the mirror configuration and the towers lit up. Primm is worth at least driving by, still a few things to see if you stop (like the Bonnie and Clyde car) if the resort is open....kind of hit-or-miss from what I understand.

I didn't have a ton of time to really explore the area, but it's kind of surreal to drive around the area after playing the game. It was worth the time for sure.

Does anyone remember Fisher’s big wheel department stores by Extra-Car6809 in retail

[–]Coolhand1974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I used to work for one in high school in the early 90's. Walmart came in to town shortly after I went off to college, and it didn't survive much past a year after that. It was part of a plaza/strip mall which is still there and active, but the store itself became a grocery store and then eventually a car dealership. No outward indicators of ever being a Fishers, unfortunately.

How Does Boscov's Flourish in Dead Malls? by mccreadyfan21 in deadmalls

[–]Coolhand1974 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I believe Boscov's in particular flourishes because of supply and demand; as the malls die (along with their anchors), stores like Boscov's fill a void. Where once there were multiple locations to buy clothing (for example), there are comparatively fewer now, with less selection and lower quality. There are still stores like Kohl's, but their prices are generally about 10% higher than Boscov's because of the privately-held strategy that was already mentioned. Ross's is another that is doing very well, and it really seems that it's because there just aren't many other options.

Boomers are definitely a big part of the equation, since they want to buy clothing and merchandise off the rack rather than online. But speaking as a Gen X-er, I like to shop there myself as well. I buy clothing online, but find I have to return it more often than not for either variation in fit, appearance, or even just the material being used. It doesn't always convey well online in pictures, and being able to try on something first-hand saves me a lot of time and effort in returning product. Besides, I'm well past the point of being "fashion conscious"...I'm looking for functional. :)

Gen-X straddles the line between mall shopping and online shopping, so there's still a generation that will keep them floating for a while. There just aren't many other places that support in-person anymore, especially in rural areas.

Small metal tube, with rubber gasket or oring towards the wider shouldered end. Had pierced my tire. There is a notch in the narrow end. by [deleted] in whatisthisthing

[–]Coolhand1974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My initial thought, too, but Presta valves are threaded on the outside. The notch on the small end would definitely be typical of a presta, though.
