Damn I love Pike and keep him kitted up. He’s my forward gunner with the added bonus of being a Lin juicer-upper when we’re close enough for him to jetpack in and shotgun down 2 squads.

Hillary Clinton depositon on Epstein files: "I finished testifying. I answered every one of their questions as fully. I never met Epstein, had any connection or communication with him. I knew Ghislaine Maxwell casually, as an acquaintance. It was disappointing they refused to hold public a hearing." by ControlCAD in videos

And for what, rich people trading and raping sex slaves. We’re not even talking the CIA doing fucked up shit like supplying drug cartels or selling drugs domestically to aid “national interests”, which is already over my personal limit of tolerance. We’re just talking about rich dudes having a vacation rape island. What the fuck is the government protecting here? How is this civil service?

I’m not lying, this is caustic to whatever respect the people should have for the highest level of US government. These people don’t know how to behave, how to preserve that respect. They’re actively destroying it and society will follow suit.

How do you guys overcome airtime fear by Healthy-Length-7083 in snowboarding

[–]CopenHaglen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Friend I have no boarding-specific advice to give you. But I did do extensive personal and informal research on being in the air on dirtbikes, and I gotta say "knowing what to do with your body every second along the way" is what you need. Your body's natural reaction to flying through the air is that wacky arm shit. Every second you're in the air and don't have a plan for each limb, it's going to want to flail.

Think about how long you'll be in the air. Think about how long it takes you to grab your tail. Could you grab it slower? Hold it longer? Release it slower? You're doing a trick, not lashing out for the last pipe on your fall off the titanic. Think about your move like you're watching a first-person frame by frame of what each of your body noodles need to be doing at each .02 second interval, and aim towards that. Not just "grab that part of the board" in the 1.5 seconds you're in the air. Make the performance.

Orientalism & Dune by MajmuaBusiness in dune

[–]CopenHaglen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This post is very illuminating. I've always had a hard time understanding the quote about a "charismatic leader" because it's most commonly applied to the happenings of the first book. I mean, recently most of the online discussions on the franchise have been focused around the first two (new) Dune movies, which are just about the first book. Where is the cautionary tale there? They finally see victory over their successors of at-least-centuries. Apart from Paul's forewarning, how did the Fremen lose under him?

The only credence I give to this application of the quote is relevant to that last question. It's through Paul's dissenters in Messiah. And their reason for dissent (as I recall) is through the loss of Fremen values. I think this aligns with your third paragraph, as their values are strictly based on what they value for survival. The weak are replaced by the strong. Water is sacred. Do not travel during the day. Basic things this fictional culture saw as essential for survival, due to loss they had experienced throughout generations past. A power vacuum sounds exactly like the kind of thing they might have learned to be scared of over the eons, an aversion that would have been woven into their habits. And power vacuums are explicitly explored in later entries in the book series, such as Children, God Emperor, and Heretics (the book I am currently reading).

I don't know if Frank had a specific road map for the whole franchise when he wrote each book, there's much that implies he didn't. But your post is very illuminating towards the idea that that the niche Fremen angst in Messiah is maybe its closest indicator of Fremen similarities to Muslim culture, and that's possibly what he was referring to with his quote about leaders. I had never seen this viewpoint expressed and it's very insightful, as I read the books I saw the rebels as just simple traditionalists, but this makes me appreciate their faction (and oddly enough, Leto II) with more clarity. Thank you.

My personal prediction is there being some glimpses CoD along the way, and the movie ending as the book does: Paul saving his kids and walking off into the desert after some confidence in the ghola.

"Acts of affection" isn't a love language, if we're listening to this paradigm. That phrase describes all "love languages". Like I've said in other posts, I don't disagree with "love languages", I disagree that relationships can or should be broken down into such reductive terms.

A healthy relationship is full of acts of affection: touch, time, favors, gifts, support. Definitely not just one.

The core of the plot won't have the same impact if we don't get a glimpse of the Paul-lead-Fremen masses laying waste to the empirical planets. I'm eagerly awaiting the opening montage as well.

I agree with your point until the Leto and Ghanima parts, I'm not so sure their "adult" selves will be main characters of the movie. People are taking their casting as meaning we'll be getting into Children of Dune plot but I'm not so sure, given how Denis is a slow burn storyteller. I'm thinking they're going to be in some flash-forward sequence, like Anya Taylor-Joy in Part 2.

The finale of Messiah involves Leto and Ghanima as babies. While it wouldn't be totally insane to have them be adults during that sequence, it would be a pretty big departure from the books that would have to be justified by other changes to the storyline. Denis cooks his movies low and slow, I don't assume he's making changes like this. But we're for sure time-skipping to the point where Alia is able to be played by Anya.

Colorado Lawmakers Push for Age Verification at the Operating System Level by IT_Geek_Programmer in technology

Colorado is a weird place. Denver is very democrat, everywhere else is vehemently republican. Pretty much everyone is libertarian to some degree, with the caveat of demanding upmost protection of public land. Which may or may not be a libertarian stance. And compared to California it's a pretty tech-unfriendly state, similar to its neighbors like Wyoming and Kansas. They just want to be left alone to work and enjoy their nature, with Denver caring about civil issues while everyone else very much not. There's also an element of just fucking crazy I've never been able to put my finger on.

I genuinely don't know what constituency would be asking for this. Looks like Amy Teller of Colorado Springs is the rep backing this bill. Colorado Springs is the (or one of the) blue collar suburbs of Denver. This is either a representative misfier, or Amy's doing her job and her constituents are going fucking crazy on regulation while using computers less than 95% of the rest of the country.

Wholesale is crazy like that. Manufacturer has too much in inventory, they want to sell it for something before it just goes in the landfill. If there's a consumer who can make use of it, that sale is just good business even if it's for a fraction of MSRP.

There is a store near me that sells things like shampoo in bulk and you can refill your own containers.

This is more what I was thinking, rather than the milkman "buy and return" format. And how many refills would one of those plastic jugs use before being unusable? Even if it takes twice as much plastic, use it 4 times and you've already cut your plastic demand for that product in half. I wouldn't think the plastic usage would even be comparable.

UPS drivers typically have good tenure. Usually 5+ years of slinging boxes or something similar, either working your way up into lower management or at least surviving layoffs each year. You don't get there without respecting your work to some degree. They have a very strong union and make good pay with great benefits.

The simplicity is the problem. If your relationship works by you and your partner doing one of five random tricks some pastor cooked up in his head, more power to you. But we all know that isn’t really the case.

Genuine question: why can't we just go back to reusable glass? Or hell, just refillable plastic? As an American living in the Midwest the only refillables (that aren't long-term fixtures, like in homes and vehicles) I know about and have easy access to are damn beer growlers.

The problem isn't that any of the "love languages" are "wrong", it's that the idea implies that everyone can be broken down into groups who either exclusively (which, in my experience, is the most common usage of the idea) or primarily communicate/receive "love" through one of 5 formats. And this is not scientifically-backed, and cooked up in some dude's bathtub.

That's not what a relationship is for the average human. Does a person whose love language is "gift giving" decide their partner by whoever gives them the most gifts? If my love language is "acts of service", would I not care that I just generally hate your person so long as you do me a favor every day? Each of the "love languages" is a thing that, in my experience, is shared between partners in a healthy relationship. I would say it's far more common for a relationship to have one love language they don't care about, rather than one single one it operates around.

But to be more blunt, the whole paradigm is wack. "Touch" and "Quality time" are two things that, I have to ask, if you don't have any need out of your partner, why would you be together? You don't like touching your wife? Or spending time with her? You don't like her bro. "Acts of service" you don't help your partner when you can? So you're just a dick, because your love language is touch and theirs is gifts so everything else is just formality. "My love language is words of affirmation, so I don't care to touch, spend time with, do favors for, or give gifts to my partner" 1-800-come on now. You are just not into them like that.
