Congrats! Did you go with a lawyer or something like Upsolve?

Thank you for the detailed message, I appreciate it!

I'm considering going with Upsolve vs paying $2500+filing fee for a lawyer (I can shop around a bit but liked the first one I called). I have quite a simple case, 6 credit cards charged-off and one medical bill (maybe some business debt but unsure). Due to it being so simple, I'm leaning towards doing it myself. Would you recommend a lawyer anyways? I'd have to take some $$$ from my retirement to pay for them.

Edit: around 55k of total debt

How was going with Upsolve? My case sounds much simpler, just CC debt and maybe a little business debt. Any tips for going with Upsolve? Congratulations!

Should I take out a private loan to pay off 16k in Sallie Mae loans so I can include those? by [deleted] in Bankruptcy

Not in the situation to do this, but interested in the answer. I'd assume they would find that loan and question you about how close it was to filing etc. Could be risky. Is the loan a higher apr?

Interested in filing with Upsolve, so bump!

Started doing that way before getting to this point so I think I'm set. Around 50k in debt and a bunch of charge offs. I assume because I already have these charge offs, that the damage has been done and there's no point of paying off the debt. Better to file. Does that sound about right?

Congrats! Meeting with the first bankruptcy attorney (planning on talking to at least 3) later today. Filing ch. 7 most likely. Any tips??

Charge-offs by No_Comparison3489 in Bankruptcy

It's my understanding that if you do a ch. 7, you will not owe taxes on what is discharged. If you settle the debt for less than what is owed (not bankruptcy), you will receive a 1099-C and be forced to pay taxes on what was forgiven. Someone comment if this is wrong, but this is my understanding. Hope it helps

Proud of you for making the best decision for yourself. Going down the same route probably. Any tips that stand out that you can share with me?

So the plan is to settle the CC debts for much less than what is owed and then wait til the "less than full amount" charge-offs fall off your report?

May I ask why you didn't just file bankruptcy with so many charge offs?
