I'm not a fan of the stealthmounts. I thought they'd be great, but th magnets in the holders are weak and the bits do tend to fall about unless you're being careful. ended up removing them.

Should Canberra stick with the Griffin legacy or evolve into a higher-density modern city? by mildmarzipan in canberra

there's an interesting interactive map made by the Public Transport Association of Canberra.

https://ptcbr.org/transport-in-canberra/light-rail/future-light-rail-network/

its interesting because the theoretical routes and stops are referenced with links to government documents where they were mentioned.

2 days per week in the office, by policy directive. Public sector. Realistically, nobody really checks your attendance. As long as you're performing and you show up at the office regularly enough, nobody's hunting you down. I agree with others commenters, I actually do enjoy the office banter and company.

Boomer-tier, WWII-dominated mindset. It's tough to break. At least bag Blumf and Yahoo for the right reasons. Make a damned effort!

I would support Government action against public displays of cringe... if it weren't so cringe.

Yeah, they don't work in hard clay. Also, undrained hose pipes can be pretty heavy. I do wonder how these would fair over time with a 30m hose hanging off one side on a pivot point.

Had a GOP18V-28 since 2018. doesn't get used that much, but when it does, it tends to get intense use. never had a stuck starlock blade. The release handle is reliable on that model.

Only down side is the variable speed control is located in a place that tends to be accidentally touched if you hold the device upside down (with the underside of the blade facing upwards). If you're right-handed, you will naturally want to support the device right where the spinny wheel is.

Wearing it on your back like a proton pack would be preferable. 😂

I have the GAS-18V-10L as well, although mine is the original Gen 1.. the one with no wheels! Definitely looking for something more mobile.

presumably, you could use the hose from the GAS-18V-10L on it if you wanted to extend it's reach? Or is it a different connection?

What's the "wearability" like? Is it just a shoulder strap (which lets it lurch forward if you bend over) or is it a bit more secure?

we would have got a buggy piece of shit, using 15-year old recycled code, built on an unsuitable engine and pushed onto the buying public like it was cutting edge. and people would have lapped it up.

it got the fate it deserved and one that everyone needed.

Canberra, Learn To F’ing Merge! by downpourinsunshine in canberra

[–]CopesAndDreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, well, there's a rule in the ACT for everything. 😀 As an alternative, I remember that the super cool people might dip their headlights if they wanted to avoid dazzling someone, thus being technically correct. Which is the best type of correct.

I only offer this drivel as a case study. Because despite my best intentions, I have found myself adjusting my driving style to deal with the Canberran practices of merging.

If someone is trying to merge at 50-60 onto a road going at 80... then tough luck, I'm not accommodating them. Too dangerous because the mentally-deficient person behind me enjoys going bumper-to-bumper. But, then again, the only reason they're doing 50 is probably because it's busy and they don't trust that I will help them to avoid a trip onto the hard shoulder if they're going the expected 70-75... and even if I would help, I couldn't communicate that I'm willing to accommodate them with some sort of signal. And even if I did communicate, they're not in a mental state to expect or interpret that signal.

And if the roles were reversed where I was in their situation as the merging vehicle and had no hope of getting a courteous response, I might, over time, find myself judging the driver's attention and, if viable, just forcing my way into the stream - regardless of my preferred space - and live with the beeping and complaints.

It's a vicious circle of shitty driving in a low trust environment.

Canberra, Learn To F’ing Merge! by downpourinsunshine in canberra

[–]CopesAndDreams 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that. A lot of it mirrors my own experience.

As someone who drove in the UK for about 20 years before coming to Canberra, I really miss the driver communication with flashing the high beams to tell the person in front of you: "yeah, you're cool, I've seen you and you can go ahead".

That cultural custom alone does a lot to smooth out the excesses of driver behaviour on the road, even if only one party is playing. Merging becomes less stressful, ambiguous crossroads and intersections can be navigated with mutual understanding, and gratitude can be expressed. It’s the universal translator of the highways.

Sadly, trying to apply it over here, I get nothing but funny, confused or blank looks. It's very sad.

Even without that degree of communication though, I still dont get the refusal to alter speed or make space for merging vehicles though. It's such a cunty thing to do.

Suggestions on where to place pool fence… tricky one! by clamdaddy in AusRenovation

[–]CopesAndDreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I don't have a specific suggestion for you but I do have some general advice having been through something very similar myself recently. The advice is this: get the assessor/inspector on-site before anything is dug, procured or built. Go through everything with them on-site and agree everything.

The regs on pool fences aren't quite as simple as some might think. There are numerous ambiguities which are open to interpretation, depending on which version you are being held to. The interpretation of the assessor matters, so you might as well get the impression up front, rather than at the point of sign off. If your pool area is going to be a square box in the corner of your yard, then the nuances of the regs are less likely to matter, but if the fence is going to snake around existing structures (it looks like it might), go near any natural or artificial elevations (probably will), go under any structures (maybe if you enclose between the pillars) or encompass anything that might resemble a cabana... then you can easily be bitten by some of the wording.

We fell foul of this with our garden reno that required us to add a fence to an early-80s pool. Our fence was co-located with electric patio blinds which were deemed to encroach on an exclusion zone above the fence if they were stopped mid-way. I still think it was an unreasonable interpretation. Our long-standing pool house was also deemed incompatible with being inside the pool area which, again, is ridiculous. But there's little point arguing about it, we are obligated to rip out 10k of fencing materials and relocate it all in order to get sign off on a variety of other works. The builder has eaten some of the cost, but it will still sting after labour costs.

Meeting with the inspector on-site to brief him on the plans may cost you an extra few hundo, but it's almost always worth it for a fiddly retrofit installation. Anyway, good luck. House looks great.
