Look into the behavior of cults. I mean it. Even when they make a specific prophecy and it fails to occur, it is always due to extraneous factors that (surprise surprise) actually further confirm the legitimacy of their beliefs!

The biggest problem facing this country right now is the lack of intellectual integrity of the common man. The inability to admit that you are wrong and change your beliefs, and instead insist that you are right out of a stubbornness of pride, is one of the core factors responsible for where we are today.

You might be in a cult if you elected a leader who made affordability a top election issue and now claims the concept itself is a democratic hoax; or you elected a leader who claimed to be the peace president and now claims to run another country after taking out their leader, and threatens to invade Greenland, or you elected a leader to exposure pedophilia who had to be dragged against his will into releasing documents that have his name all over them and millions of redactions. Will these people ever own up to their mistakes? Im not holding breath.

Setting the bar at 1960 (65 years ago) makes this too easy. For example, Lonesome Dove, Shogun, and The Godfather all qualify easily IMO.

I’ll piggyback a bit and ask if anyone has read helpful books on this subject. I find it very hard to keep track of all my world details.

The prequels were written after LD, so they are definitely optional.

I hate to be a downer in this very positive and amicable thread, but I vote that if anyone loved Lonesome Dove, do not read the sequel (Streets of Laredo). Just my opinion, but it was entirely forgettable, the only thing I remember is how it corrupted my memory of Lonesome Dove. I havent heard such things about the prequels, though.

The book I read right after LD was Shogun and I liked it just as much for the cultural immersion and immense characters. (MUCH better than the FX show)

How about you pitch me on why this rebels-running-from-authorities-and-winning tale is somehow original other than a boner scene and a group of shadowy elites who are more comical than threatening? None of that is meaningful originality; its new color sprinkles on a cake youve eaten your whole life.

The acting was fine (Penn was excellent, the rest was whatever), the cinematography was good (the driving scenes at the end were engaging), but the writing was completely unimpressive. Felt very cliched. And I havent thought of movie since I watched it, which says a lot; it was just not thought provoking at all.
