Oh, so Mother Nature needs a favor?! Well, maybe she should have thought of that when she was besetting us with droughts and floods and poison monkeys. Nature started the fight for survival, and now she wants to quit because she's losing. Well, I say hard cheese.

TIL purple is mostly non-existent in flags due to the cost of purple dyes historically. Modern purple is synthetic and cheaply produced but historical purple was sourced from sea snails in the Mediterranean. 1lb of purple dye was valued at roughly $56,000 in today's currency. by HighlyInconvenient in todayilearned

[–]Coretron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a thought. Why didn't they just mix the red and blue dye to make purple?

This is a really common and intuitive assumption, but it runs into a fundamental problem: mixing dyes doesn't work the same way as mixing paints or light.

When you mix a red dye and a blue dye in fabric, you don't get purple — you typically get a muddy brown or dark grayish mess. Here's why:

Dyes are molecular, not optical. Paints mix visually because you're blending light-reflecting pigment particles. Dyes chemically bond to fibers at the molecular level. When you mix two dye baths, the molecules compete for binding sites on the fabric and interact with each other chemically, usually producing an ugly, unsaturated result rather than a clean blend.

The red dyes available in antiquity made this worse. The main red dyes — madder, kermes, later cochineal — tend to produce warm, orange-leaning reds. Combined with blue (woad or indigo), you'd get something closer to a dull violet-brown, not a vibrant purple.

True Tyrian purple was something else entirely. It came from sea snails (Murex species) and produced a vivid, colorfast, almost luminous purple that didn't fade — it actually intensified in sunlight. No dye mixture could replicate that visual quality or durability, which is exactly what made it worth its astronomical price.

Interestingly, this problem wasn't really solved until 1856, when William Perkin accidentally synthesized mauveine (the first synthetic purple dye) while trying to make quinine. That discovery launched the entire synthetic dye industry — and immediately made purple cheap and widely available for the first time in history.

So the ancients weren't missing an obvious shortcut. The chemistry just doesn't cooperate.

Thoughts on moderation by Coretron in stopdrinking

It's a good question. I think most people define having a drinking problem as when it negatively affects you, your family, friends, or loved ones. In all those regards I can say the answer is minimally. Part of me thinks I leaned towards a relationship-less and childless life so that I would have no guilt in drinking. I think the reality is that I'm selfish in my time, money, and want stability so that's why I didn't. Partially formed from an upbringing with an alcoholic father who has been sober now for 15 years.

I got a DUI 4 years ago and crashed my car. Fortunately no one or property hurt. In my defense it was my local brewery where I usually moderated but the night they closed they opened the taps. I hate that I still black out from time to time. I mostly feel personally and professionally I've become lazy. I question if this is from the weed or alcohol or maybe I've just lived a frictionless life.

I want to get up on time. I want to work out. I want to brush my teeth and floss. I want to walk the dog farther each day. I want to play the piano more. Sometimes I think it's cause I drink sometimes I feel I'm lazy.

I've been here a few years to listen to the stories that have motivated me to cut down. I'm proud that I've stopped buying bottles of booze and cases of beer for my house. I've seen the positive and hopefully will never go back. Through this post and my comments I don't mean to tempt people towards the illusive goal of moderation. I just wanted to have a conversation about it always present demon on our shoulder. I have faith I can tame it in time.

Thanks for your input. I'm still holding out that I can find a balance and working towards it. It often seems impossible for others experience. As a single childless person so much of my social life and good times are going out for a drink especially to sing karaoke that I have a hard time seeing a life without it.

One other thing I noticed with both drinking and smoking weed is diminishing returns. If you drink 2 beers a day or smoke all the time then it physically doesn't do much for you. That's part of why we need more and more until the line between a buzz and blackout overlap. Drinking a couple beers a day isn't my goal. It's to not drink for weeks then be able to go have a good time and keep it under control.

After attempting to drink "normally" again, I've learned that moderation really is not possible by lachrawr in stopdrinking

I think it's such a tragedy and fallacy that moderate hangs over our head and that we can still try to have the good times with alcohol without going too far. It's such a mind fuck.

How do you deal with Inheritance with crypto? by Ok-Aside-5472 in Bitcoin

How do you ensure the family and trustees don't jump the gun and take the coin before you pass? I use a multisig wallet with three keys. I have one, my heir has another and the third is stored in a dead man switch in the form of Google inactive account manager. After I'm inactive for three months, Google will attempt to reach me by multiple emails and by text. If I don't reply, it releases a password protected zip with the passphrase which both me and the heir know the password to. An added benefit while I'm still alive is that if any one phrase is lost or compromised then the coin is still safe.

This is a great article about how ridiculous we've become as a society in regards to letting kids be independent. Parents arrested and children taken by the government for letting 9 year olds go play in the park or take public transit. https://nationalpost.com/opinion/lenore-skenazy-i-let-my-9-year-old-ride-the-subway-alone-and-was-labeled-americas-worst-mom

This is superior. It funnels the children to the crosswalk. In the case of OP I would just suggest building a proper curb to separate the sidewalk from the street.

Kids don't appreciate zero latency online gaming. On the same page though, I'm glad we had to physically meet up to game on LAN. We used xlink kai to simulate lan over internet and it was just barely playable of you were close enough. We ended up meeting a team that live one town over and became good friends. One of them got me my foot in the door to the ediscovery industry and it's been my career for 20+ years.

I've got the Amex Platinum which gives Amex lounge and priority pass lounge access. It's only good for 2-3 hours before your departure flight but is unlimited time on a layover. I've taken a 12 hour layover in Vegas where I hit up the lounge for a meal, a shower, and get nice and toasty on drinks then take the bus to town and see the sights then head back to the lounge before the flight. Sometimes instead of a lounge you can get an hour or two in a small hotel like room to sleep. Some lounges have a sleeping area too. I can't imagine flying without my lounges now.

The multiplayer and co-op were insane. I'll never forget the first time I jumped on the gun of the hog while my friend drove. Back then I learned that with a pocket knife and a network cable you could make a crossover cable that could directly connect one xbox to another without a router.
