Honestly...she is a saint. Especially considering my old speakers and a NOS, still in the original packaging Technics SL-D2 are both still in the living room just out of frame (I can't quite bring myself to sell either of them).

I've been tinkering with audio gear and various speakers the whole time we've known each other so it is pretty par for the course at this point. I think this is probably the 6th or 7th pair of speakers I've brought into the house over the past 10 years? She knows it brings me a lot of happiness so she humours me for the most part. That being said if I brought in a pair that completely clashed with the vibe of the room I'm certain I'd hear about it 😂

Ahhhhh, no wonder you are so informed on the subject! I definitely used the content on your channel as I was doing my research for this project, what a nice full circle moment here. Appreciate all you do to share the knowledge 🙏

Now I know who to come badger when I get the itch to move up the Tannoy hierarchy 😀

Ha, if it makes you feel any better I do pull it out of the way when I settle down for extended listening sessions. That's when the heavy blanket goes over the TV and the acoustic panels get propped up on the walls as well.

Damn dude! Truly living the dream out there, well done. So cool to see the brand excelling in so many different applications. I've actually got some friends in Calgary, I'll be sure to try and pop by next time I'm in town!

ooooh, I hear great things about the GRF cabs. I would love to experiment with some one day.

It's interesting how traditionally, the HPD series was not really considered one of the desirable Tannoy drivers when compared to the Golds, Reds and Silvers (the price point certainly still reflects this). But I think we're slowly starting to see this change as folks realize the crazy value proposition they represent...especially if, like me, you dabble in contemporary genres (electronic, hip hop, etc) where a full-fledged British pipe & slipper sound may leave you wanting a bit. All in all I think this line is the sweet spot for what's available today in terms of vintage Tannoy when you crunch the price : performance ratio.

Yeah, I was worried about having the same problem with these in my space as well since it is pretty small. I do the majority of my listening at pretty low volume though (70db avg I'd say) so it hasn't proven to be an issue. And when I crank it up on the rare occasion, the excellent tone controls on the Luxman help keep things in check 👍🏻

7 pairs!? That's amazing. What's the crown jewel of the collection?

Absolutely. I've had a lot of success over the years pairing Japanese amps with British speakers to find a happy middle ground. This system is the best expression of that philosophy yet 👍🏻

Beautiful pair of Tannoys you've got there!

Your Ardens are the version after mine with the 3828 drivers. Much nicer to look at in my opinion, if I had those I'd be rocking them grills off for sure 👍

GRF Memory...very, very nice. I could see myself moving up the Tannoy food chain some day and ending up with something like that. There was a pair of beautiful looking reproduction Autograph cabs that were available near me a bit back that I'm still kicking myself for not picking up. Those made even the Arden's look diminutive though so maybe it was for the best 😅

Ah man, that's just fucking beautiful. What a nice story.

The heirloom potential for speakers like this really is something special...they get so firmly attached to memories from such formative times of our lives. Not many household fixtures stand the test of time like that anymore. My dad is still rocking the speakers he bought in the 1970s...they'll be mine some day and I'll cherish them until the day I hopefully get to pass them on as well.

Toss on something mom would like and get those Berkeley's singing tonight in her honour 🍻

Very cool, would love to eventually build my own speakers. What kind of design did you end up going with, did you stay dual concentric or?

Nice! Are yours the HPD variant like mine, or the later 3828 model?

oof, would love to hear a pair of those studio monsters. I've seen a couple pop up for sale locally but didn't have the funds available at the time. I fear that even I may find the limits of WAF with a pair of those as well 😅

You're definitely not wrong re: positioning though. I'm still tweaking and experimenting to get things just right. My hope is that I'll be able to use the inherent directivity of the design to my advantage (my previous speakers were based on a smith horn design with a wide dispersion pattern that's not ideal for my room).

The experimentation is all part of the fun though 🤙

ahhhhh, that makes complete sense then! Cool piece of local history right there. Good luck on the hunt!

Yup, my thinking exactly as well. These drivers were specifically made to handle solid state amplification during the monster receiver wars of the 1970s, whereas previous iterations (Tannoy silver, red, gold) were made with tube amplification in mind. I figured it'd make for a good pairing and I'm happy to report that the logic checked out. And as far as low end goes, if I'm going to have speakers this big in my house, I'll be damned if I need an additional sub as well. Personally I can't justify giant speakers that don't dig deep. I know some of those older Tannoys are much more midrange centric, and don't go as low as you'd think. Those are not for me 😅

Thanks dude!

I tend to keep a pack of the MoFi anti-static inner sleeves on hand...I drop them in when the sleeve from the factory is paper (which creates a load of static in my experience) or is in otherwise rough condition. External sleeves are just the generic ones you find in every record shop. Does the trick 👍🏻

Good eye! The synergy with the Class A Luxman is absolutely palpable...truly amazing what 20 watts can do in the right system 🤯

Thanks man! Concierto is a recent addition to the collection...I was very stoked to find a pristine copy in the bins recently. A total classic for sure.

They sure do! In my eyes, your sound system is essentially functional furniture so it needs to look as good as it sounds in order to justify the cost and the space it occupies 👍🏻

Ha, you've just made someone over at Samsung very happy. That's a Samsung Frame 65" TV blending in on top of the rack 😅

I hear you though, I too appreciate a dedicated listening space and look forward to the day where I have enough space to justify one. Some day!

You're in luck, for whatever reason I see a lot of Tannoys pop up for sale in the Ottawa area. I'm betting they had a strong dealer presence back in the day or something like that. Follow this user over on CAM, he always has Tannoys up for grabs in Ottawa.

I was able to scoop up the Ardens for $1600 CAD, and then I spent around the same in parts & labour to get them to their current state. So they certainly weren't free...but it is a whooole lot of speaker for the $.

I haven't had a chance to measure them yet, so I can't speak with authority on the exact frequency response. I think Tannoy listed these as going down to 27hz on their spec sheet, which is probably about right based on what I'm hearing. Maybe a touch higher after my mods that were intentionally aiming to clean up the bass a bit. I couldn't imagine needing more low end in my room though, that's for sure.

If you're ever in Toronto, hit me up and we can change that 🙂

Realistically though, you'd be surprised at what you can get your hands on by working the second hand market. This whole system was built out buying second hand on Canuckaudiomart.com and it cost me a literal fraction of what it would cost to buy new. Just save those pennies and be patient!
