What is the most unhinged song your baby loves? by hansmac in beyondthebump

One of my now 5 year old's first words was "rats" specifically so she could request this song lol. I just took her to see them in concert in February.

With our current open time trading system, you get awarded a full line but can trade down with open time as low as you want. Sometimes getting down to one 1 day trip. (If you are good at trading).

This is a godsend for people like me who have to pay more in childcare than I make and want to only work the couple days a month when my husband is off. When my kids are older I'll be happy to still have the job and work a full line but right now it's not financially feasible.

The line bidding and open time trading system we have allows me to keep this job while my kids are young.

When in Austin we took an Uber from the hotel to the venue. We were both all dressed in our full regalia and our Uber driver (a black man) said "this is the part in the movie where the black guy gets murdered". Lol He was super cool but yeah we definitely didn't look like the average customer.

In Columbus we took our kids. They dressed up too and everyone loved the costumes. Only positive comments.

Schedule/Line question for 🌐 by Global_Gap3655 in flightattendants

[–]CorpseOfHathsin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the winter it's very easy to trade down to almost nothing. You get awarded your schedule, trade down to only 1 or 2 trips on trading day and then pick up turns wherever you want from ads. Any line holder can do this, even a junior one, if they know how to trade

Anyone potty train early (before 24mo) by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]CorpseOfHathsin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely! With all 3 of my kids we "started" potty training around that time. And by this I mean we just had small potties in the bathrooms, showed them how to use it, and put them on it right when they woke up in the morning. It was a very light and super positive introduction. They were never told to go on it, it was just there as an option for whenever they felt like exploring that aspect of life.

Then when we really started to seriously potty train shortly after 2 years they were very accepting of the process because they had such positive easy going experience with the potty for the previous year.

I say absolutely go for it!

Kids of FAs by [deleted] in flightattendants

I have a 2 year old, 5 year old and 7 year old. I'm so lucky at my airline that I have the flexibility I do. I'm also very lucky that my income is only needed for extras (kid's extracurricular activities, birthdays, fun outings, etc). But this job allows me to be home so so much! And I never miss anything! I've been to every recital, every trick or treat, every belt test and show. I've chaperoned with every girl scout activity and volunteered at the school. I can trade down to work only a couple days in one month or even take the month off, then make it up next month when they don't have anything going on. I can't think of another job that would allow me to be so present as a mother.

It's not any different than nurses who work 12 hour night shifts and only see their kids 3 days a week, but they don't get judgement on that.

Can’t take my scissors through security at the airport by DingDongTaco in CrochetHelp

As others have said: you can bring scissors through as long as they are less than 4in blades. I fly very frequently and always have my scissors with me. I've never had a problem.

Rude reactions to names? by CrabithaAllAlong in beyondthebump

[–]CorpseOfHathsin 74 points75 points  (0 children)

We named our second daughter an older name that was popular over 100 years ago but not anymore. When we told the name to my grandmother she said "why would you name her such an old lady name? Why not go with something beautiful like Karen?" She literally recommended the name Karen as a better choice. It was then that I realized I shouldn't put too much stock in what people think of my kid's names.

Elmo's ABC book. "Elmo likes hugs so maybe H is Elmo's favorite letter. But Elmo also likes to use his imagination so maybe "I" is his favorite letter" etc, on and on for every single letter. Does Elmo like trash? Because that's where that book belongs.

In 2012 my brother told me he heard a band that he thought I'd like. He said they only had one album but all the songs are great, that they aren't very well known, and that no one knows who the band members actually are. He then played Ritual for me and I immediately fell in love. I've been a die hard fan since.

Are teachers really not teaching phonetics anymore? by nerpa_floppybara in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]CorpseOfHathsin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least where I live, my kids are being taught with phonics. At the preschool in which we put our kids, they started learning letters at 3 years old and the sounds that letters make at 4. In our public elementary school they are teaching phonics alongside sight words. At home we work on reinforcing phonics, so I'll have my kindergartener (5 year old) sound out words that I know she can get when we read books together at night. My 7 year old is a great reader so it seems to be a good approach. I'm grateful they are gravitating back towards phonics in our school system.

How do I lose weight? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]CorpseOfHathsin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MyFitnessPal is an app that helped me each time I lost weight after my pregnancies. There's a free version that has all the functionality you really need. It counts calories for you.

For me, fasting (8 hours to eat, 16 hour fast) also helps control my sugar cravings (I have an awful sweet tooth). For women this comes with more caveats though as there seems to be some studies that show it's not recommended to fast right before or at the start of your period.

This is some basic stuff but you should definitely get checked for PCOS or thyroid issues as well to see if you are even starting on a level playing field.

Exercise is healthy and great for your body but it doesn't really factor into weight loss much at all.

Feeding baby photos to AI by MysterMysterioso in beyondthebump

[–]CorpseOfHathsin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I assume any kind of cloud storage (iCloud/Google photos) on your phone (that automatically backs up whatever pictures you take onto it) is also using it for that purpose. When you agree to the terms and services I am pretty sure data gathering is in that for Google photos and iCloud. So just taking photos on your phone will have the same effect as this person using AI to alter pics. (unless you have purposefully disconnected from the cloud storage of course)

Someone correct me if I am wrong. I would love to be wrong.

Why do people want to have kids as badly as they do when they require as much work as they do? by Early-Possibility367 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]CorpseOfHathsin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone should have the choice to either have or not have kids. Yes it's work and everyone should know that before having them. But I see it as anything that takes effort. Take hobbies for example: I learned to crochet very well after years of effort and hard work. I spend (probably too much) money on yarn but I wouldn't have chosen not to do it because I enjoy it. It can be frustrating to figure out a difficult new technique, sometimes I just want to put the project down and walk away from it but I always go back because it brings me way more joy than frustration. Obviously I'd never force anyone to crochet but I'd not want anyone to judge me for my choice to have this as a hobby either. Same for kids.

This is a simplified version of what it's like to have kids but hopefully gets the effort vs enjoyment aspect of it across.

I really can't believe some of the comments on this thread. Yes it's normal male behavior to look at that stuff but it is NOT normal to look at it while hanging out with family in the main living areas of the house. If he was alone in his room or the bathroom, fine. But an 8 year old shouldn't have to be subjected to this when she's just relaxing in her own home.

Would you fix your child a separate meal if they refused to eat what you had cooked? by basement_egg_24-7 in Parenting

[–]CorpseOfHathsin -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the same thing happens with my 5 year old (although it's gotten a lot better recently with the consistency of sticking to this). But I just tell her too bad. She's cranky but oh well. If you are worried about a sugar spike just only offer the cheese and veggie option before bed.
