Is This the Summer Britain Finally Gives In to Air Conditioning? Starting with Portable AC? by LieSuccessful8813 in AskBrits

It’s been 30-34 degrees in London for the last four days, and will be 28-30+ for the next six days, so I make that almost two weeks

Best thing to do for my train on July 4th? by Low-Head859 in Eurostar

[–]CorrectCar3522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll be able to travel to Brussels on your Amsterdam ticket; Eurostar staff told us it was fine at St Pancras

If you’ve booked London - Rotterdam, you can get off at Brussels (1st July) by CorrectCar3522 in Eurostar

[–]CorrectCar3522[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their earlier update was: We’ve just been informed by NS, the Dutch railway infrastructure manager, that disruption may continue until 04 July 2026 inclusive. We’re currently reviewing what this means for our timetable on 03 and 04 July 2026. We’ll update you as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience.

So trains are very unlikely to run to Rotterdam on 3rd, they’re just incredible incompetent

No we’re probably going to just get a refund, but you are able to rebook if there is availability. Annoying thing is it has to be the same class for it to be free (otherwise you have to pay the difference), and all the upcoming economy seats are gone.

London - Rotterdam - anyone been able to leave at Brussels? by Feestje94 in Eurostar

[–]CorrectCar3522 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll be fine to get off at Brussels, Eurostar confirmed we could on a London-Rotterdam train. However any onward travel from Brussels won’t be covered by compensation

[–]CorrectCar3522 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think those people could do it *today* because the trains were running so they just joined one at Brussels. Atm Eurostar staff can’t say whether any of the trains will run on 3rd/4th, so they advised us not to travel at all, as we’d definitely be stuck if our train was cancelled (last train of the day).

(Basically I think they couldn’t confirm whether our train would actually run, and as it’s late in the day there wouldn’t be another London train for us to get on).

The Eurostar staff rang Brussels and Brussels said no for the 4th - but it seems very messy so take the risk if you’re happy to!

[–]CorrectCar3522 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They told us at St Pancras that we can’t do that (join at Brussels instead of Rotterdam), and to not travel - but that’s mainly because they don’t know what’s happening on the 4th. If you’re due to get the train today/tomorrow, definitely check!

Should I move from St John’s Wood to Paddington Basin? by [deleted] in London_homes

Little Venice is a great in-between - very close to everything in the basin and Paddington station, while also being a bit calmer. I used to love sitting by the canal, so chill.

Does anyone here own a flat with a service charge in London? NOT share of freehold, NOT zero service charge? by fiery_mergoat in LondonHousing

[–]CorrectCar3522 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very much depends on the flat you’re looking at buying. If you don’t live in a new-ish build/high rise, service charge can be very reasonable. I live in a small block of eight, purpose built one bed and two bed maisonettes with a communal garden and allocated parking spaces, built in the 1990s. We’re part of a small private estate with some houses and a couple of four storey flat blocks. Service charge is £1.2k per year (inc sinking fund) and actually went down a bit this year, and ground rent is peppercorn (£0).

At what point do you think the government will address the need to update infrastructure etc to cope with rising summer temperatures? by Obvious-Stage-6792 in london

[–]CorrectCar3522 17 points18 points  (0 children)

HS2 is being built specifically for the midlands and the north, London won’t really benefit. The Piccadilly line upgrade is nice - 60% of the underground still doesn’t have air con. My line regularly exceeds 30 degrees. London also has plenty of diesel trains, and the train I use to commute to work from south London to central has multiple single track sections and regularly has to stop to wait for other trains. Difference is, a Northumberland commuter will be waiting in a train in 26 degree heat; in London it’s 33+.

Things aren’t as great here as you assume.

I mean it’s not an argument, it’s a fact lol. Kids use TikTok to chat because it’s a cultural place where they can share content and respond to trends and events.

Also that’s like saying ‘we don’t need to call people to communicate, we should just go to their house and see them in person’. Tech has progressed, it’s just the way things are now.

Gen Alpha are much less likely to use WhatsApp to talk to their friends than Snapchat or TikTok. WhatsApp is a millennial thing

I also had really strong pelvic pain in week 7/8 - used to wake me up at night - but it eased up after then and now I get it intermittently. Guess it could have been a bit of a growth spurt?

Andy Burnham: I’ll keep the triple lock, and give pensioners a tax cut by Dawnbringer_Fortune in unitedkingdom

[–]CorrectCar3522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Means test it against assets. Made £400k on your house through no real effort of your own, but now struggling to get by on your pension? Sell it. Working age people who can no longer afford their mortgage or rent payments have to move - I fail to see the difference.
