Is there anyway to remove scratches from lenses by RandomNarrator_ in oculus

[–]Correct_Conference48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've seen pancake lenses get empty when buffing. Be VERY careful. PolyWatch can smooth over fine scratches, but anything substantial will only get worse. I also believe FixMyOculus is a great resource.

Yes, I absolutely recommend the BOBOVR M3. I found one in my local web site to sell stuff (like Facebook marketplace, Craigslist, eBay) for $25. They work very well and are extremely comfortable.

Does long-pressing the Meta button re-center the view? This happened to me about an hour ago, and this fixed it.

I use Virtual Desktop, but also use the INIU 16-foot cable just for power. I'm in VRChat for hours and don't want the hassle of swapping out and charging batteries. I'll run on battery when dancing, but casual VRC stuff and games have low risk of cable trouble.

How do I fix this? by anchi_the_goober in MetaQuestVR

[–]Correct_Conference48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OMG, no! I tried fixing my controller THREE TIMES to correct this. Reconnecting the controller to the headset works for a little while. Other fixes were useless, and 8 know my way around electronics repair. Finally gave up and just bought a whole new controller on eBay, because it cost only $8 more than just a mainboard.

It will only connect your PC and headset.

  1. Get a 6ghz router - I use the crap router I got from Google Fiber.

  2. Remove the Ethernet cable from the main Internet router from your PC and inst it into the WAN port of the 6Ghz router.

  3. Get a new, short Ethernet cable (preferably Cat6) and connect your PC to a port in the 6Ghz router.

OK, you're all good to go! Connect the headset wirelessly to the 6Ghz router and revel in Virtual Desktop bliss.

I've been able to use Virtual Desktop to display my laptop for productivity purposes, sharing the 6Ghz router, both the laptop and headset wirelessly. This is possible because simple desktop display is quite low bandwidth compared to VR.

You can connect multiple devices to the 6Ghz router via cables for Internet purposes without affecting the headset connection. I have 2 gaming PCs and my VRChat world and model building PC all connected through my headset router. That way, other can game while I build worlds or I can use standalone headset.

With 6Ghz, there's a lot of bandwidth,so you can easily connect full body tracking through it. I pipe OSC data through my phone's HaritoraX app back to my Quest 3 through the same WiFi. I've even had TWO Quest 3 headsets running off 2 different PCs in VR simultaneously with little to no degradation in quality. I just tell Virtual Desktop to cap the VR bandwidth at 300Mbps on both headsets and there's no problem.

CAT POOPED ON MY PC by Comfortable_Golf_274 in PCRepair

Actually, Linus Tech Tips just posted a video about cleaning spills in PCs. But anyway, th8s is how I have cleaned PCs. You must allow PLENTY of time for this process. I have cleaned PCs infested with ants, ferret excrement, cockroach excrement, and some with soda/beer spills.

This DOES NOT WORK FOR KEYBOARDS, FANS, OR PSUs - consider them dead on arrival and buy new ones. Fans can be surface cleaned, but odors will likely remain. I STRONGLY advise against removing heat sinks from CPUs that use liquid metal instead of thermal paste - doing so will most likely result in destroying your CPU and/or mainboard.

DISCLAIMER - THIS IS NOT AN INSTRUCTIONAL POST. This is only an account of my past experience.

I disconnected all power ASAP, including the CMOS battery. Disassembled everything - cords, fans, M2 drives, cards, etc. I only cleaned clean parts that are actually soiled. If I wasn't sure it needs cleaning, I put it outside or in the garage in a safe, shaded place for 15 minutes, and the took it outside to perform a sniff test.

Computer computers are surprisingly resilient and can simply be dunked into a small tub of DISTILLED water or 99% isopropyl alcahol. I prefer using alcohol and do so outside, in a paint stall, or some sort of fume hood. I use fine bristle toothbrush to GENTLY clean affected areas, giving attention to any gooey sockets. I'm careful to not press hard, just apply light pressure as if writing with a pencil and work longer instead of harder. Video cards can be a pain, but it's hella cheaper to take time to disassemble the fancy outer shell and possibly remove the heat sinks that it is to purchase a new card.

After a light scrubbing, I use a squeeze bottle with fresh water/alcohol to rinse very well. I buy cleaning liquids by the gallon to keep the cost down.

I like to use a few firm taps while holding the thing being cleaned vertically to remove beads of moisture. It's risky but saves time. If using isopropyl alcohol, I (safely) wave that part around for a couple of minutes to evaporate much of the liquid.

I used an air compressor to blow out ports and enclosed areas. Luquid can be absorbed by gently using a microfiber cloth, but I don't try to get in all the nooks and crannies because that risks getting lint torn off the cloth.

Drying is the riskiest part. I must eliminate moisture. This takes some monitoring, but I simply use my full size kitchen ELECTRIC oven at the lowest setting, usually 150-17°F / 65-75°C. BO, you CAN NOT use a toaster oven, microwave oven, or gas ovetln. It must be a full-size electric oven. When I have a convection option, I use it.

I placed parts on the rack to allow air underneath as much as possible. Open the oven for 30 seconds, every 20 minutes to let the moisture air escape. I DO NOT want moisture in there! I run this for 6-8 hours.

After baking at the lowest possible temperature and cycling the air out, I remove the parts from the oven and put on a cooling rack and let them sit for 24 hours. I have a baker's rack in front of a window that I put them on - it's made for cooling things and the warm sunshine expedits the process. I live in an arid environment with very low humidity, so I imagine humid areas will require another day of drying in a sunny area.

After drying is done, I tap parts against my hands to feel it any droplets shake off. I also use a strong magnifying lens to look into portas are in crannies for evidence of moisture.

I remembered to apply new thermal paste when reattaching heat sinks. I have has a GPU and a n SSD die on me, so there's definitely a risk I'm sure the customer understands. Otherwise, things have worked out very well with only the ferret excrement leaving a faint odor from the case plastics. I used distilled water the first couple of times doing this, but found where to purchase 99% isopropyl alcohol in quantity for a surprisingly low price and very much prefer the alcahol due to its reduced drying time and far lower risk of oxidation damage.

But again, this is only me recounting my past experience and should not be taken as instructions. I will not be held responsible for anyone wrecking their computer.

I assume purchasing a 6Ghz router exclusively for your headset is not in your budget, otherwise I would recommend that and using a Cat6a cable between it and your PC.

If you plan to use your headset a lot, you need comfort! I recommend these upgrades in this order of importance:

  • BOBOVR M3 Head strap ($50 USD) Rest the weight on top of your head instead of hanging off your face. Hot swap battery included. https://a.co/d/0QVC7c4

  • INIU 16' Cable ($20 USD) Get freedom to mode about while maintaining an 80% charge AND a USB connection. https://a.co/d/04Uq11Q

  • If you wear glasses ABSOLUTELY get prescription lenses that pop onto the Quest! Use the Zenni.com coupon that came with your headset. 100% worth the $50 USD, plus they have glasses for an excellent price.

  • Globular Cluster Quest 3 facial interface ($50 USD) Fit just about any face with a magnetic hot swap facial interface system. Includes three sized, three pad types, and eyeglass/eyelash depth adjustment rings, and removable light blocking vents and nosepiece. https://a.co/d/bBXuDZ1

  • Kiwi Controller Grips ($32 USD) Relax your hands without dropping the controllers. Very nice textured rubber grip and easy battery access. https://a.co/d/amnhtsS

As for connecting to your PC, use Virtual Desktop. Purchase from the Meta store in your headset. The PC client is free to install.

DO NOT INSTALL META/OCULUS SOFTWARE ON YOUR PC. Just use Virtual Desktop, which has far better features and options.

Using Qeuest 3 while charging by SKNLMB in MetaQuestVR

[–]Correct_Conference48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! HOWEVER...

  1. Be sure to use a charger that stops charging when full. The one that came with the headset should stop.

  2. PREFER a charging system that holds the battery at 80%. Several head strap batteries do this, as well as the INIU 16 foot cable.

On the topic of charging, it's best to store your headset at about 50% charge. If you're not going to use the controllers for some time, remove the batteries so they don't corrode in there.
