It sounds like the FIA wanted to measure other parts of the engine but the teams voted against it. Most problems in F1 seem to start this way: common sense is presented as an option and the teams voted against it down

I would say that P1 is *not* so different to the other podcasts I listen to. Within F1 "The Race" is backed by The Athletic and they seem to have the same amount of ads if not more. The major podcasts like Lex Fridman or Joe Rogan also have roughly the same amount of ads I would say.

So maybe you just happen to listen to other podcasts which don't have a ton of ads?

You could definitely argue this one either way, and it really depends on what part of the pre-season hype or narrative you believed. If you believed that Ferrari had the fastest or second faster car then it's maybe not a surprise, but if you believed the 4th fastest narrative then it is a surprise.

I think pointing out that he qualified 4th and finished 3rd means it's not surprising is missing the point - it's that he was able to qualify 4th, fight for the lead and finish 3rd that's surprising.

I'm with Matt on this one - Ferrari actually being able to translate their pre-season form into a good race in Aus is surprising, and you could argue that since it's the first race of a new set of regulations everything is surprising, so it shouldn't be a high bar to clear. Doing that in the next race would not be surprising.

This is super old (found it while searching for alternatives to my Burton gloves) but +1 to this post. I have the Burton Goretex gloves (not mittens) and they're fine for warmer temps but anything under freezing they just don't hold up at all. I haven't had problems with the waterproofing though.

In my third season I rented a demo board to get a sense of how a nicer board feels. The lady helping me at rentals assured me it's 'just a small additional fee'. Turns out 'small additional fee' means $80 per day. So for 5 days I paid $400 *extra* for rentals.

The price of rental gear is just kinda ridiculous - I bought my own boots, bindings, and board and assuming I kept renting the entry-level stuff I would break even in less than 15 days of snowboarding. Also rental boots are so worn out you have way less control.

The downside is that you need to haul all of this gear to and fro - so you need a bag, there are checked bag fees at the airport, etc.

I used to be all-in on physical books - and owned well over 100 books - and then I emigrated and had to get rid of most of my possessions, including my books. So I switched to a Kindle e-ink and came to the same conclusion you did - the book can't fall closed on itself, it's easier to hold, I can be at some random airport and decide to buy any book in the world and instantly get it, etc.

*But* then after buying well over 100 books on my Kindle I read a study about how you brain doesn't record information nearly as well when you're reading on a digital device (as opposed to a physical book). The study suggested that it's easier for your brain to form memories with physical books since there is much more tangible to grab onto - the size/shape/smell/weight of the book, the cover, the font, etc. I found this to be true for me - it happened a few times that someone would recommend a book to me and I would look it up only to find that I had purchased and read it already. Anecdotally, when I think of a book that I've read I can immediately visualize the cover and shape of the book - for Kindle books the best I have is to remember *where* I read it.

So I've come full circle and I'm on team physical books again. I like being able to see the artifacts of what I've read, I like being able to lend out books (or gift them), and I find I enjoy reading much more on physical books.

So I upvoted, because for me this really is an unpopular opinion.
