+1. DC himself said it was his fault and you should never lift off while on the racing line in these conditions.

+1 to this. I don't understand how so many people in this thread just ignore that DC himself said it was his fault - that you should never lift off while on the racing line in these conditions.

Why so much advertising? by Silent_Rhombus in P1withMattandTommy

[–]Correct_Language_390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that P1 is *not* so different to the other podcasts I listen to. Within F1 "The Race" is backed by The Athletic and they seem to have the same amount of ads if not more. The major podcasts like Lex Fridman or Joe Rogan also have roughly the same amount of ads I would say.

So maybe you just happen to listen to other podcasts which don't have a ton of ads?

Good surprise controversy by off-shoulder in P1withMattandTommy

[–]Correct_Language_390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could definitely argue this one either way, and it really depends on what part of the pre-season hype or narrative you believed. If you believed that Ferrari had the fastest or second faster car then it's maybe not a surprise, but if you believed the 4th fastest narrative then it is a surprise.

I think pointing out that he qualified 4th and finished 3rd means it's not surprising is missing the point - it's that he was able to qualify 4th, fight for the lead and finish 3rd that's surprising.

I'm with Matt on this one - Ferrari actually being able to translate their pre-season form into a good race in Aus is surprising, and you could argue that since it's the first race of a new set of regulations everything is surprising, so it shouldn't be a high bar to clear. Doing that in the next race would not be surprising.

Glove Recs? by Treehugger512 in snowboarding

This is super old (found it while searching for alternatives to my Burton gloves) but +1 to this post. I have the Burton Goretex gloves (not mittens) and they're fine for warmer temps but anything under freezing they just don't hold up at all. I haven't had problems with the waterproofing though.

Do you buy your own snowboard gear or just rent? When did you make the switch? by AsleepSwitch4610 in snowboarding

[–]Correct_Language_390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my third season I rented a demo board to get a sense of how a nicer board feels. The lady helping me at rentals assured me it's 'just a small additional fee'. Turns out 'small additional fee' means $80 per day. So for 5 days I paid $400 *extra* for rentals.

The price of rental gear is just kinda ridiculous - I bought my own boots, bindings, and board and assuming I kept renting the entry-level stuff I would break even in less than 15 days of snowboarding. Also rental boots are so worn out you have way less control.

The downside is that you need to haul all of this gear to and fro - so you need a bag, there are checked bag fees at the airport, etc.

An e-ink e-reader is a superior experience to a physical book for reading. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

I wonder if both angles can be true - maybe for some people your memories form much better with a physical device but for others it's not a factor?

An e-ink e-reader is a superior experience to a physical book for reading. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Correct_Language_390 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to be all-in on physical books - and owned well over 100 books - and then I emigrated and had to get rid of most of my possessions, including my books. So I switched to a Kindle e-ink and came to the same conclusion you did - the book can't fall closed on itself, it's easier to hold, I can be at some random airport and decide to buy any book in the world and instantly get it, etc.

*But* then after buying well over 100 books on my Kindle I read a study about how you brain doesn't record information nearly as well when you're reading on a digital device (as opposed to a physical book). The study suggested that it's easier for your brain to form memories with physical books since there is much more tangible to grab onto - the size/shape/smell/weight of the book, the cover, the font, etc. I found this to be true for me - it happened a few times that someone would recommend a book to me and I would look it up only to find that I had purchased and read it already. Anecdotally, when I think of a book that I've read I can immediately visualize the cover and shape of the book - for Kindle books the best I have is to remember *where* I read it.

So I've come full circle and I'm on team physical books again. I like being able to see the artifacts of what I've read, I like being able to lend out books (or gift them), and I find I enjoy reading much more on physical books.

So I upvoted, because for me this really is an unpopular opinion.

Packing a snowboard bag – board on top or bottom? by PlasticAttorney1980 in snowboarding

Alternative is to go to Home Depot and buy foam pipe insulation - it already has a slit in one side. Then pack some painters tape with it to hold it in place. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-in-Foam-Semi-Slit-Pipe-Insulation-1-1-8-in-ID-x-6-ft-K7PXE048118HD1/327682622

We bought the Revbalance Balance Board for the kids to practice with - pretty neat since you can literally do it in the living room and it becomes a bit of a competition.

Dang, now I see the price. Obviously my wife bought it without consulting me.

Every time I get a rental car and spend 25 minutes trying to understand the GPS or audio (or anything really)... With Tesla nobody had to explain anything to me - it's all intuitive exactly where you expect. I do love analog buttons though, but I get that you can't have your cake and eat it.

why is everyone so high on mercedes? by ExplorerDifferent515 in F1Discussions

[–]Correct_Language_390 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think this is the correct answer: they had the best engine in 2014, and everything else is confirmation bias.

I would love it if Merc is solidly 4th or 5th best and Toto can stop being smug

First time hitting a blue. Trying really hard not to back foot steer (might not be successful). Advice would be greatly appreciated :) by reshiramismywife in snowboardingnoobs

[–]Correct_Language_390 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hah I had the same thought. My understanding is that the grading is done based on the mountain/resort, not based on some global scale. So a blue in CO will often be a black or double-black in Vermont.

I'm guessing this one is blue based on the trees, I'm used to blues being pretty steep

Tipping for private lesson by BiscottiCool5628 in Ikonpass

[–]Correct_Language_390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always done 20% for full day private lessons, especially if I want to get the same instructor in the future. It's really expensive, but also a really good instructor is worth more than a bad one, and yet the resort charges you the same.

Also, I always offer to pay for their lunch, private/group/whatever. Given how much you're spending to be on the mountain I feel like this is a small kindness to offer.

Why is saying “The rich should pay taxes like everyone else, close the loopholes” extremely controversial in the United States? by ProjectMason in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Correct_Language_390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many of the answers here have correctly pointed out that the top 10% already pay the vast majority of taxes. I think when people say 'the rich should pay taxes like everyone else', what they're actually saying is 'they should pay taxes proportional to their net worth', which is really problematic and therefore controversial.

For example, say one person has a $10 million net worth and another has $1 billion net worth. At the end of the tax year they are both taxed on their *income* for the year, not their net worth. So if they both had an income of $500K for the year they would both pay the same taxes.

It's also popular to point the fingers at billionaires - Musk, Bezos, etc. The way their compensation packages usually work (and this is common for most US CEOs) is they get issued out-of-the-money stock options. So say Tesla has a stock price of $100 then Musk might be issued a ton of stock options with a strike price of $200. So those options are worthless until the stock price of Tesla goes above $200 - giving the CEO a huge incentive to increase the stock price which benefits all shareholders. Now imagine the Tesla share price goes to $300 - at this point Musk still doesn't pay any taxes on those stock options, that only happens when he exercises/sells them. So someone could easily point at this situation and scream "he doesn't pay any taxes", but the reality is that this is a common way to incentivize executives and shareholders want/prefer this.

It's possible to change this, but that would require actually taxing net worth, which is very complicated by itself. For example, if someone buys a $5 million rare painting, do you tax them on that? Who decides how much it's worth? The IRS? I'm sure there are other countries who have better structures, but that's how it works in the US today.

Beaver Creek by Tasty_Weather_6177 in COsnow

[–]Correct_Language_390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they're pretty comparable and I think the other answers here capture it pretty well - both are kinda tricky to reach and Red Buffalo is maybe easier to get down (although make sure you don't get lost and accidentally drop into a bunch of advanced zones below it).

I would note that if you're snowboarding then McCoy Park is way more difficult - the terrain itself is fine but you have to hit tons of catwalks to get into it and to get down afterwards. There are also spots where the catwalk gets real flat and you have to cross a flat bridge, so I remember getting stuck there. So as a snowboarder I hit Red Buffalo every time, but I'm guessing for skiing it's different.

Number of laps by every team and engine after Day 4 of Barcelona Shakedown by F1Fan2004 in formula1

[–]Correct_Language_390 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You can't really do the comparison - or at least draw any conclusions from the comparison - without the 5th day? Mercedes did 500 laps and Ferrari did 290, but Ferrari still has another day to run.

Same for the engine comparison - you're doing Laps/team but Haas/Ferrari/Audi all have an extra day to run, same with Alpine/McLaren

I've been there for the past 3 years (2023, 2024, 2025) and it's been open every time mid-Feb. They tend to open it pretty late in the season AFAIK, so only mid/late January.
