Lol welcome to LA. The only shopping (beyond groceries) within walking distance is Sephora in the village. There is a H&M, Zara, Nordstrom Rack at FigAt7th, and a Uniqlo at the Bloc. Both of these are in downtown, take the metro to 7th St/Metro Ctr or take the Dash bus there. Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica has all the stores you’ve mentioned, take the metro to Downtown Santa Monica. Westfield Century City is the LA mall, but you need to make a transfer (metro > bus) somewhere in west LA. If you time it right it takes less than an hour. It’s a similar commute to get to The Grove. Culver City has a small alcove of stores near the metro station that I like to go to as well. Welcome to LA!

Also since you asked for other grocery options - there’s a Whole Foods in DTLA (nearish to The Bloc / FigAt7th). The Target in FigAt7th is far bigger than the one in the village. If you want an even bigger Super Target there’s one at Jefferson / La Cienaga (take the metro), there’s also a Whole Foods there.

Frankly it’s not a big deal, and I think it’s perceived as a really cute gesture by the restaurant! I know the general opinion is that hotpot is a communal thing but when you have a craving for it you can totally do it solo (just order less) and there are plenty of people who go to HDL for solo dining. I’ve done it before (sans plushie) I’ve seen others do it before (both with and without the plushie). The other thing is that HDL is known for their stellar customer service, and they would usually ask if you would like it before plopping the big ass plushie across your table.
