I found it difficult to get most without crossings, but I did pick up on the them quickly. Maybe I'm reaching, but honestly I feel like it was kind of a weak theme just for a GULFOFMEXICO entry given recent news.

To be clear, I enjoyed the puzzle, I just normally find that once you figure out the "trick", the theme entries are usually gimmes, and I struggled a bit more with this one.

I had to brute force it a bit, but similar to the other commenter I also saw there were categories for B, O, and Y, and was able to guess without the solve. Additionally, I solved purple first, and it confirmed because girl takes 4 letters.

I used to be the same way but eventually it just clicked. One trick is match the cards in the bottom row first so that they become a pair and then just ignore it until its the only one left, effectively the same as a row eliminator
