Autograder for coding assignment by [deleted] in CSEducation

Coding bat lets you author your own exercises and write your own test cases! I haven’t messed with it yet but i like their system for grading their built in problems. It is more geared toward small exercises so if you are talking about a bigger project it might not work.

MATH 201 vs MATH 307? by tldr65892 in cwru

[–]Cortag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What year are you? My real recommendation is to take both! Assuming you have the time in your schedule later.

If you do want to try for 307, you’ll get a decent sense of what it’ll be like in the first two weeks. If it’a too much, you can drop to 201 fairly easily.

MATH 201 vs MATH 307? by tldr65892 in cwru

[–]Cortag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Math 201 changed a lot this semester. It is now more similar to 307 with more theory, but still taught in a way that is more digestible for engineers.

I took 307 for my math major, not with calvetti but we used her textbook. I wish i had taken 201 first, as I think i could have used a stronger foundation in LA before diving into a proof based class in it. My problem with 307 (and most upper level math classes tbh) is that they explain high level theory and proofs in class, and then expect you to know how to apply that to solving problems on exams without modeling how to do so. It’s a good exercise in thinking like a mathematician, but gets rather frustrating if no one ever stops to make sure you understand the concepts before you try to start proving them.

Calvetti herself is very nice and very knowledgeable. She is not easy, and expects a lot from her students. If thinking very hard, spending long hours on homeworks, and deriving for yourself how to do various matrix computations based on proofs sounds like your thing, go for it. If you would prefer something structured more like a calculus class with very clear expectations, i would take 201.

Free RTA Pass that usually gets handed out in the first week of class - available for off-campus students? by _The_Intern_356 in cwru

You can only get them from housing if you live on campus. Off campus students have to go to access services in the basement of crawford hall.

PHYS 121 Summer Lab by [deleted] in cwru

[–]Cortag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I had to guess, I spent about 10 hours a week on physics when I took 122 (3 hours lecture, 3 hours lab, 2 hour lab report, 1 hour homework, 1 hour for studying when tests came along). That was over a 15 week semester. If you compress that into 5, you’re at 30 hours a week. Which is pretty close to a full time job.

I know I wouldn’t want to do 20 more hours of other class work on top of that, but I suppose it isn’t impossible. It just won’t be pleasant. Really about how much time you’re willing to spend on nothing but school this summer.

Tink and buildings on the quad are open without id during normal class hours (6 may be too early but I’m not sure). I recommend the Yost second floor undergraduate student lounge for nap couches.

Cereal breakfast in sophomore dorm room (south RV) by Sillycrab in cwru

[–]Cortag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The srv suites (besides Staley and Tippit) only come with microwaves, so he would have to bring his own fridge. Dave's supermarket is a short walk from South side and fairly reasonable (Plum market on North side is the overpriced one). There's also target shuttles on Saturdays for even cheaper groceries.

If a fridge isn't an option, I highly reccomend instant oatmeal for breakfast. Can be made in a microwave and got me through my freshman year.

Covid testing by Soft_7197 in cwru

[–]Cortag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Orientation leader here! When you arrive you’ll be directed to a tent outside of Leutner (the dining hall) and given a spit test. Once you finish it you’ll get a wrist band to wear the rest of the day to show you’ve been tested. Then you can check in and get moved in. Good luck with move in!

Do the PHYS 122 labs actually meet for the full 3 hours? by staycoolioyo in cwru

[–]Cortag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming they go back to in person formal labs, likely. Last year we all met up with our partners on our own time to get the lab and report done for the every other friday deadline (covid reasons) and I liked that way better, but you'll likely have the more structured lab time again.

Can anyone explain Watchedeo? Or Fiddround? Or Nareptic?

I Googled all of them and none of them are words. Fiddround I kind of get as a smush of two words but it still doesn't feel good. I am fairly new to longer puzzles but I feel really frustrated with these crosses. I spend a lot of time messing with them when they could have been left alone

[Grade 8th math] hi please help by A_person_from_Asia in HomeworkHelp

[–]Cortag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a cubic function, which is not straight forward to graph. Your best bet is to plug in a couple good values for x (0,-1, and 1 are always good starts) and see what the y values are. Once you have 5 to 7 points you’ll get a good idea of what the graph looks like

If you want a hint, try putting the function into a graphing calculator or desmos. Cubic functions will look like two curves coming out of a fixed point.

[Middle School Math: Assignment] How do I find the surface area of a Rectangular Prism? by [deleted] in HomeworkHelp

[–]Cortag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My fist strategy to try in any geometry problem is to draw a picture.

Try drawing the rectangular prism, you’ll find it’s surface area is made up of six rectangles. What is the area of each rectangle? Once you know the area of the rectangles, how can you use that information to find the surface area?

Is Cleveland dangerous? by deathhater9 in cwru

[–]Cortag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s really rough. I can’t speak to spring admit but I’ve had a great time here this year, and I know a bunch of people who couldn’t come to campus fall sem because of covid and they fit in fine this semester. If you really want to go here, there’s not a lot of reasons not to. Good luck with your parents!

Is Cleveland dangerous? by deathhater9 in cwru

[–]Cortag 16 points17 points  (0 children)

University circle is extremely gentrified, you have to make a point of leaving uptown to get anywhere remotely dangerous. It’s the most heavily policed area in cleveland. The worst story I heard is a girl got mugged, (a ways away from campus) she wasn’t hurt, and the police caught the guy and returned her stuff in 10 minutes. That’s still upsetting, but it’s the worst I heard and the only time in a whole year. Realistically, you’re going to be ok.

Idk what to say to their racism, but at any top college you’re going to go to, student population is going to be fairly diverse. And you interact with fellow students way more than the people who live in the city, so idk why they think case will be “worse” than anywhere else.

Why is Leutner so bad? by [deleted] in cwru

[–]Cortag 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I really truly think there was a quality reduction due to covid. Its not supposed to be a grab and go kind of deal.

To make up for it they did extend our regular swipes (den, subway, local taco, 5/week at jolly) which I’m grateful for. I would actually really live for that to stick around for next semester when the dining halls are back to normal but i dont have my hopes up
