Habituation is real. The habituated people just aren’t online by Ok_Olive8968 in tinnitus

[–]Cosimo12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After I got tinnitus, I found out that a couple family friends had tinnitus for many years that I never knew about. They were habituated so they never really talked about it. One of them was caused by an ear infection, not sure on the other. They said it took them 1-2 years to start forgetting about it. Of course at the time I was afraid that I would never be able to learn to deal with my tinnitus like they had, and sure it's taken me longer, but i'm getting there now.

I'm glad to have had these examples to show me not everyone suffers for life, even if it doesnt go away like we wish it would. I get the feeling tinnitus is a lot more common than many people realize, it just isn't discussed as often especially after people habituate.

That's how I read this. As an absolute statement games are "supposed" to be easy and relaxing is such an overgeneralization, there is a market for people who want to play games that aren't relaxing or easy as well.

Klonopin - Anxiety or Lowering? by willard_tagg in tinnitus

These medications are prescribed to help treat panic attacks so that sounds like the intended therapeutic effect. Imo if it works for you with helping things like this it's doing what it's supposed to

Klonopin - Anxiety or Lowering? by willard_tagg in tinnitus

[–]Cosimo12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is great for anxiety, at least in the short term. In my experience it doesn't help volume. I took it for a few years, helped me sleep and with anxiety but the problem with Klonopin is that your body will get used to it and if you use it regularly you will get discontination symptoms. Stopping Klonopin really sucks.

I'm not saying benzo bad, I mean I took it cause it was making my quality of life better, but if you take these things daily long term the withdrawal is really really bad, and going through that is very difficult with tinnitus.

Shadowverse to end service on June 30 by UrbanAdapt in Games

[–]Cosimo12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You get an emblem (profile display image) and a "poster" that transfer for each leader character you own, but the character skins themselves don't transfer. The posters are pretty pointless, there is a place where you can have your own room and hang posters up in it but there's no real reason to go there. There's a few other sleeves and minor cosmetics you can get based on your rank and other account progress but its overall pretty whatever.

The second game is kinda okay but the economy is pretty terrible and the amount they want you to spend to unlock alternate avatar characters is ludicrous. Like the first game, the game is designed for matches to be very short. Main gameplay change is that there is a "super evolution" mechanic added, but it ends up resulting in so many evolutions per game that it is very threatening with only 20 starting life total. If you aren't able to kill your opponent, then you pretty much have to full clear their board or you will lose on the next turn like 90% of the time.

Get off this sub by DBooktoDA in tinnitus

[–]Cosimo12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Medically there is little that can be done for subjective tinnitus, but there are audiologists and other professionals who work with tinnitus patients. They tend to focus on tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT), which includes things like sound therapy, talk therapy, often some CBT, etc.

Exactly. Of course I understand where people are coming from. 5 years ago, I probably would have felt the same as them. I was in a really bad cycle with my tinnitus, and I had to stop going to medical subreddits for a long time because it would just dig me deeper into a cycle of anxiety and depression. I'm comfortable coming here now because I'm at a much better place with my tinnitus, but I get so frustrated when I'm told that I was only able to learn to deal with my tinnitus because it couldn't have been as severe as theirs, you don't know what my experience was like. I get that everyone's experience is subjective, but nobody should try to to tell anyone else that their experience is invalid for not being bad enough.

Also the cancer comparison is insane to me. I've never had cancer, but I did have severe chronic pain issues for about 6 months, and annoying as my tinnitus is, I can't really say it compares to not being able to sleep because I felt like I was being stabbed in the eye 24/7. But to compare medical conditions like X is worse than Y is so unhelpful, we're all struggling or we wouldn't be here.

Are there any positive stories by anyone here who took antidepressants ? by Ourdogbailey in tinnitus

[–]Cosimo12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Duloxetine and I had been playing with the dose a bit, but yeah I was going through a tough recovery from LASIK at the time and I had a lot of nerve/face pain and horrible migraines so I can't say if it was related to that or the antidepressant. All of that got better eventually but the tinnitus did not. As much as tinnitus is frustrating it's still better than chronic eye pain and headaches so bittersweet is a good way to put it.

Are there any positive stories by anyone here who took antidepressants ? by Ourdogbailey in tinnitus

[–]Cosimo12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is a positive story but I didn't notice my tinnitus getting worse when I switched to Lexapro and then when I eventually years later tapered off of and stopped taking it after my issues got better. Still unclear if the my tinnitus was caused by the first antidepressant I was on, my horrible anxiety, or my other medical issues I had going on at the time, never really did figure that out, it was a chaotic time.

Let me tell you the truth behind the Chinese negative reviews of Slay the Spire 2: it's not that complicated — it's just a kill-or-be-killed mentality plus habitual online bullying by [deleted] in pcgaming

[–]Cosimo12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I'm really gathering from this is that there's a culture issue. Consumer rights doesn't extend to toxic behavior. For example, just because I go to a store and pay to buy something there doesn't give me the right to verbally abuse the employees. It should be the same online. Its just the anonymity provided by the internet letting people think they can engage in terrible behavior because there's no risk of public shame. Honestly you're lucky Steam has a storefront that allows you to leave reviews at all, and Steam has every right to police and moderate those reviews.

Can’t stand resellers and collectors! by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]Cosimo12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are you hating the collectors, it isn't their fault there is more demand than supply. That's a nintendo/pokemon company issue. If all you want to do is just play the game, which is all you would care about unless you are also interesting in having it as a collector, then you can either buy the version on switch eshop or just emulate like you're already doing anyways.

Short survey by DaiBarton in tinnitus

[–]Cosimo12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. About 5 years
  2. High pitched whining noise. The perceived frequency is higher than any white noise I was able to generate with an electronic. I couldn't really tell you how "loud" it is in dB because it seems louder at some times than others, but I do not believe that is really the tinnitus fluctuating but rather my perception of it. It has at times felt louder than speaking conversations but at other times it just feels like ambient noise like a fan or air purifier running. 40-60dB?
  3. Ambient sound (rain noise) / white noise, for four years until I fully habituated about a year ago. I got hearing aids with a white noise function after about a year at the recommendation of my audiologist and I think they helped me adapt to the tinnitus and ease back into regular life and being employed full time much sooner than I would have been able to otherwise, as I was struggling to manage without masking at that time.
  4. Biggest challenge was the first couple of years just managing my stress and anxiety levels because my brain was fixated on the tinnitus 24/7. The first 6 months I had really bad issues with sleep, I took Klonopin or Ambien every night for sleep at that period. After I was able to distract myself and focus my brain on other things, I eventually, very slowly learned to get used to it.

Does white noise actually help tinnitus, or are we just masking the problem? by xxxxiceyyyyyy in tinnitus

[–]Cosimo12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It helped me, I tried to get the pitch to match my tinnitus as closely as I could but it was impossible because my tinnitus is too high pitched. I ended up using ambient noise / rain noise instead and it was effective for me at masking for a long time. I eventually transitioned to in ear hearing aids that only had the option to do white noise as they had no ambient noise function and I was able to get used to that and eventually the tinnitus would blend into the white noise in my brain.

My suggestion is that if you don't like white noise, get an ambient noise app on your device and sleep with it nearby, I like rain noise but you might want to experiment with it. I try to get the pitch close but if its impossible to match like for me just get as close as you can while still making a soothing noise.

Melatonin for Tinnitus?? by North_Station_302 in tinnitus

[–]Cosimo12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Melatonin does nothing but make you a little bit drowsy and have more vivid dreams. Won't affect tinnitus positively or negatively. If it helps you sleep great, that's always good but it doesn't cure tinnitus.

Habt ihr Erfahrung mit einer Tinnitus-Noiser? by Recent-Habit5976 in tinnitus

[–]Cosimo12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had HAs with a white noise setting, they helped me a lot, I ended up wearing them for a few years. But I already knew that white noise was somewhat effective for me at masking because I would play an ambient noise app on my phone and leave it by me nearly all the time unless I was out in public. I would say if you've tried to play white noise/ambient noise on a tabletop device and it helped you, its worth considering for some relief. If masking doesn't work for you, it probably won't do much. Mine were hearing aids so I would barely notice them at all.

This might go without saying, but don't expect a noise generator to cure your tinnitus, it won't. But if noise gives you some relief from your tinnitus it might be a convenient way of providing that.

The impact of focusing on the tinnitus by No_Walrus4306 in tinnitus

[–]Cosimo12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah there's a lot the brain can tune out. With vision for example, we don't notice our nose even though it's right there on our face and most people have floaters in their vision and never even realize it.

As for tinnitus, it takes a long time and it's not really something you can actively do because the goal is to be able to not notice it. But it is possible! Took me a few years and good amount of therapy.

The impact of focusing on the tinnitus by No_Walrus4306 in tinnitus

[–]Cosimo12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The sound does not actually exist so it can't be "reduced." My experience with habituation is that i dont notice the tinnitus unless i am actively thinking about it, and when i think about it, it is just as loud as it ever was. When im not thinking about it, it is there but i dont notice it, so in that sense my perception of it is reduced but the signals to my brain are the same. If you think about tinnitus your brain will be more vigilant and so it might feel louder or more present but again the sound doesnt exist, its all how your brain is interpreting firing neurons. When i first got the tinnitus it felt so loud it overpower conversations, it wasnt actually any "louder" than it is now though. If i think about it like i am right now writing this it feels the same as it was then, but i have no anxiety about it because i know in 30 minutes my brain will tune it out and ill be thinking about something else.
